What an amazing and enlightening week I have just experienced. To say only those words does not give the necessary justice to the last seven days. Last Saturday I, along with my friend Frank, flew from Dublin to Agadir, a city on the west coast of Morocco. Though we told our families and friends otherwise, we had no itinerary, hotel reservations, or booked tours. We simply bought our plane tickets, packed some clothes into our bags, and headed south. Though I will not recommend that everyone take this approach, I will say that it does allow for an unbelievable experience and one that I certainly hope to encounter again in the near future. We left the 12th of January and landed in Morocco that evening. After catching a taxi from the airport into the city we ... read more

I headed south to Agadir to check out the beach and the scene there. I also wanted to try a find a bookstore that the guidebook mentioned but that turned out to be a waste of time because if there ever was a bookstore there wasn't anymore. I stayed a day in Agadir and spent the night in a yellow 8 by 8 foot box but it did have a mini sink and a structurally questionable balcony so that more than made up for it. The next day I left Agadir and headed further south. I got a ... read more

Agadir, what a beautiful drive for 7 hours of perfect panoramas, and endless breaking waves of the Atlantic Ocean. It was so mesmerizing no one said many words at all. We stopped in Safi and Essouara, where we dropped of an English guy we had met in Casa. The land was flatter than I had expected, too flat. Salt flats littered the ride from to Safi and the strong spelled of potassium filled the air around the city. Agadir is a tourist town. One that has long been trapped in the spell of vacation packages and sun burnt Europeans that travel a thousand miles to sit in French cafés and look at a vista no different than those of the North Mediterranean, or for that matter, Florida or the Caribbean. Its a place over run with ... read more

Im in Agadir, after taking a very bumpy very long car ride through the Atlantic coast on what one might call a road. We met an English guy in our Youth Hostel in Casablanca and took him as far as Essaouira. Unfortunately for me, Agadir has more tourists, all white and all European than I have ever seen. Its not very Moroccan at all, however the guys like it, including our modern hotel with modern amenities and a pool. Im not very impressed, but tomorrow we are going up through the Atlas mountains to Marrakesh, so that should be good. We will spend New Years there and then head further up to Fès and Meknès. There is nothing much to write about here, its no different than any resort town on the Mediterranean, or for that ... read more

Yep, I'm in package tourist land! I got here last night at 6pm afer catching the bus from Essaouira at 2pm. So, I had all morning in Essaouira. At the bus station I fell into the first hotel. I've gone down market again - 70 Dirhams a night with shared toilets and shower. I also booked my bus out of here. I'll be catching the bus to Dakhla at 7pm tonight. The guy on the reception of my cheap hotel was very helpful, he told me that he thought that, that bus took 20 hours! He also then predicted my intended journey through West Africa without me telling him. I had considered breaking the journey up, maybe stopping at Laayoune for a night. But then I thought, what the hell, get the pain over with! The ... read more

Hello my fellow travelers! This is the second of six posts I'll make about a trip to the Canary Islands, Morocco and Madeira in 2004 that I did with my parents and my uncle Anders. The last post covered my time on Lanzarote and this one covers my time in Morocco. The second landfall on our Atlantic Cruise was in beautiful Agadir on the Moroccan coast. It was a fairly short landfall so we were determined to make our time here count. We were not alone in that thought and you could really tell that the landfalls of cruise ships have an impact on the local community. It reflected in the general mentality here with a plethora of taxi drivers waiting by the docks to take us tourists to their favorite vendors and select photo hot ... read more
