Breakfast was the standard French stick and jam on the roof terrace of Hotel CTM. The sight of a now quiet Djemaa el-Fna belied the action from the previous night, the odd food scrap being the only remaining remnant. Paul, Jo and I were all stuffed from a week in Morocco and decided on a quiet day of limited sightseeing. This was to be Paul’s last day with us as he was booked on the 2100 train back to Tangier – leg one of a long trip back to Newcastle. Our first stop was Palais el-Badi , a 400 year old palace in an equal state of ruin and repair where we spent an hour or so taking photos and discovering all the nooks and crannies. Towards the Ville Nouvelle is Koutoubia Mosque – at 70 ... read more

Having found the public transport to be consistently inconsistent during our Moroccan adventure, we were not surprised that out overnight bus did not arrive on time in Marrakech. We were very surprised to be pulling into the bus stop 40 minutes early at 0420. This posed a bit of a problem as we were none-to-keen to be out walking around town in the dark. Fortunately a bakery displayed an opening time of 0500 on the window so we stayed put at the station, eventually passing the time over bread, jam and hot chocolate. It was 0630 when the sun started threatening the dark of night so we hit the streets in search of the main part of town. It was a good 10 minutes before the three of us realised that something was amiss and it ... read more

Be brave enough to live life creatively Alan Alda While my parents were skiing in McCall, Idaho I went to hot, sunny Marrakech on my day off. If I am sweating in a T-shirt in March I don’t even want to think about August. They weren’t kidding when they said it gets hot here. Today’s bus ride to the city was a bit more exciting than usual and I blame it on the heat. Nobody is very happy to have the summer heat set in already. The rising gas prices have forced up the bus fare from 15 or 17 dirhams to 20 dirhams from Kelaa to Marrakech. One woman must have been convinced she was cheated by the guy on the bus who takes money since she spent at least the first half hour of ... read more

Jimi Hendrix really has nothing to do with my experience in the lovely, lovely Essaouira, but a lot of Essaouirians(?) kept telling me that he, along with tother celebs like the Beatles and Bob Marley, hung out and made music there back in the olden days so obviously it's a big deal to them. It has been a bit of a hub for those in the arts community, with Orson Welles shooting 'Othello' there and more recently Ridley Scott shooting 'Kingdom of Heaven.' Though I was relaxed everywhere in Morocco, Essaouira was a lot more chilled out than the other places I went and there was a really happy vibe about town. I was smiling also because the sun was out, the sky was blue and my body got to feel fresh air on my skin ... read more

When I arrived in London I told myself that if I did nothing else I would travel to Iceland and Morocco, two places that are not the easiest to pop into from Melbourne. Mission accomplished. When I arrived back from Morocco I promised I would immediately write interesting and informative entries here about my trip. Mission not accomplished. It's been a while coming - although I had a wonderful, fabulous time, the post-holiday high has gone and I'm less motivated to write about my trip. This is a start. I went to Morocco with Intrepid Travel, a company I am more than happy to plug. Not usually one for organised tours, this turned out to be perfect for what I was after; I was a bit sick of travelling on my own and not in the ... read more

It was all happening in the centre of town in Marrakech.. Snake charmers, street plays, food stalls, souks (markets) selling everything from shisha to colourful handmade carpets, hand made Moroccan ceramics, people approaching you from every angle to eat their seafood, drink their freshly squeezed orange juice.....complete madness! Louise, Sarah and l commenced a 9 day intrepid tour by arriving into Marrakech one day earlier to soak up the Morrocan culture before the tour began. We spent 3 days trekking the tallest mountain in Northern Africa - The Atlas Mountains. The views from the mountains were incredible. l've never seen such beauty - snow capped mountains on one side and dry, green mountains on another. We stayed in little villages in the middle of the mountains, no hot water, little heating, home cooked Moroccan tagines and ... read more

“It is as hard to see one’s self as to look backwards without turning around” -Thoreau I took a little escape to Marrakech today to see some of the volunteers. My big plan for the day was to check out prices on things I needed for my future house and see if they are cheaper in the city or in my little town (cheaper in town). I came away triumphant with Tabasco (I can’t tell you how much I have craved the taste!), soy sauce and sesame oil for me and a can opener for Maryam. It was a treat to hang out with the other volunteers too. I really needed to relax and do a little venting. I have been a bit stressed out lately because finding a place to move into has not been ... read more

I hadn't planned to go by myself to Essaouira. Yesterday, Elaine dismounted awkwardly from a mule at Imlil, and we had spent the rest of the day in Marrakech getting her treated. Today, she was supposed to be resting at the hotel, and I was on my way to the coast, able to occupy two seats on the bus. ... read more

Marrakesh turned out to be a lovely spot, perfect weather and the Atlas mountains to explore. It's weird going up in the snow, over the top, finding the sun shining again and the desert stretching out in front of us. Marrakesh itself is an interesting place to explore especially the Old Midina, go in the evening so you see the market stalls and everybody coming out and about after a days work. Best time is dusk. ... read more

Since my site is just north of Marrakech I had two options for travel from Immouzzer: I could take a series of busses and grand taxis directly south through Beni Milal, or I could go a fairly roundabout way by taking a grand taxi from Immouzzer to Fès and then the train to Marrakech. Considering that a group of about twelve trainees were going to have to spend the night in Marrakech, I chose the latter. When we got up very early that morning I almost couldn’t believe that I was going to be taking a train to Marrakech. I had to take the Crosby, Stills & Nash CD with me on the train so I could listen to “Marrakech Express.” That’s such a calming album for me, it always reminds me of lazy Sunday mornings ... read more
