Hey again! So I have spent the last 4 weeks in Blantyre doing an orientation at Queen Elizabeth Hospital. It has not been my favorite thing to do so far in Malawi, but I have learned a lot. And I have seen a lot, but I will spare you the gory details. Usually, my typical day, Monday-Friday consists of me getting up around 6am. Putting on my lovely nurse’s uniform. Walking about a mile (uphill, in the rain - jk, it isn’t rainy season yet) to where the mini buses park. Paying about 50 kwacha (many times they try to charge me more because I am a mzungu) to ride to the hospital. Wandering around until I find the ward I am supposed to be at by 7:30. Waiting in the sister’s lounge (nursing station) until ... read more

Hello all! I hope things are good in the states? Here time is moving, but probably not the same speed as it is back home. We swore in and became official Peace Corps Volunteers Wednesday, July 23rd. The next day nearly my entire group departed Lilongwe for their respective sites. I, unfortunately, had an interview with a representative of the Board of Nursing and Midwifery Counsel or whatever they call it here… I was very nervous, but I think it went okay. She did, however, assign me to a 4 week orientation in Blantyre, but the other nurses have similar orientations as well. Those who remained left the next day. I left with the 2 other nurses Friday the 25th for Blantyre, and because of our locations it took us an additional travel day to get ... read more

Tragic to only write two entries while in the beautiful country of Malawi. After 40 days here, it is finally time to move on. What a time it has showed us, however. The people are as welcoming as you can be, the scenery as beautiful and untouched as it gets, and the culture makes you forget you're in one of the poorest countries in the world. I don't have time to expand more on my time here, but hopefully I will at some point later. Last I left you I was in Lilongwe after our time on the lake. Since then we came to Blantyre, the big bustling city, met up with a principal from New Zealand, and took off to the Zomba Plateau. We spent 6 days there, relaxing, reading, cooking, biking, hiking, and Will ... read more

The second day at the orphanage was definitely better than than the first - I think there was just far too much to take in that I could barely think! Anyway highlights of today included teaching a 3 yr old how to play football...they are SERIOUSLY football mad out here, partic. the english clubs like liverpool, man u & arsenal..hehe, it would be really funny if little cute boy (I've nicknamed him Beckam because he was actually v good at kicking!) remembers that a funny looking white girl taught him how to play football!! Its strange because at first, driving through the villages unnerved me a bit as people stared quite a lot, but when asking the others they said that basically in some villages they had NEVER seen a white person in the flesh, ... read more

WOW!! This place is just as I imagined and more...as I'm writing this I know I cant do it justice. The drive from the airport through the villages, the orange muddy tracks, fields of crops, men sitting by the side of the road talking, women with babies glued to their backs...then arriving at the orphanage today..all those smiling faces and waving hands, I apologise in advance - it sounds sooo cheesy, but my heart melted and the tears nearly started the first time one of the children wanted me to pick them up today just minutes after I arrived, they love playing ball games, being hugged and just being around us. As expected, facilities are minimal...I mean, I'm happy to 'rough' it and go to the loo hovering over a hole in the ground in a ... read more

With only five days left at the orphanage before I leave, and back to full strength, I'm keen to do as much as I can and tie up all the things I've started. Before going into the orphanage after the new year break, I need to get my 30 day permit extended at the Immigration office for my last week in the country. Like most of the office set ups I've seen - the administration system is slow and disorderly. Looking through the bars to the desks behind there are papers and files everywhere. Something I have seen in every office and large shop is piles of paper and ink stamping. Even as you leave the big superstore 'Game' you must have your receipt stamped by an attendant. As the geep bumps along through the village ... read more

The last two UK volunteers at the orphanage before me had bought paint and created a wonderful underwater scene along the longest wall in the hall. It is on the wall opposite the entrance so as you walk in it really lifts the environment, and stimulates the children. Painted on the wall are sharks, fish, an octopus and even a mermaid. On one notable occasion I observed one of the primary school boys, called Blessings, quietly sitting by the wall and copying some fish into his exercise book. During a previous meeting with the Reverend he had said it would be good if I could do another wall, as they want to remember each volunteer. So today and tomorrow, 27 and 28 December, are set aside for painting! The Reverend's brother, who is 24 and on ... read more

As I'm getting used to solids again and tucking into my breakfast toast, I am delighted to see a lovely couple I met on my first night at the hostel. They are from the UK but work here for an NGO making education more accessible in the Mulanje district. The couple arrive wanting to see if they can book a room for the night to go out in Blantyre to celebrate new year's eve. They kindly ask if I want to join them, and as I have no plans, I quickly accept! Later that evening we meet up and head off to eat at one of the big hotels. They are well read and knowledgeable about Malawi so I enjoy finding out more, and their opinions on things. Impressively they can speak Chichewa too. Over dinner ... read more

Well it had to happen at least once! ...Sadly it was when I had booked to stay up at Lake Malawi and had to cancel the trip. They say until you visit the lake you haven't been to Malawi; I guess that means I'll have to come back! I was fortunate to speak with a med student friend from London, who was able to diagnose me on the phone and advise me what to do. I'm pretty sure it was the orphanage food that made me ill, as I noticed my health getting progressively worse after the last two meals there. I have subsequently decided not to eat at the orphanage from now on (especially as it is getting closer to the long flight home), but I'm pleased that I had the experience and privilege of ... read more
