I WENT TO CAPE COAST TO VISIT ONE OF THE FAMOUS CASTLES WHICH HELD AND TORMENTED THE SLAVES BEFORE SENDING THEM OFF TO THE AMERICAS..... THE PICTURES ARE SELF EXPLANITORY..... I MUST ADMIT I LITERALLY HELD BACK TEARS AND WAS ASTOUNDED TO HEAR THE STORIES OF HOW THEY MADE SURE THE LOCAL VILLAGERS HAD NO CLUE WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THE CASTLE.... IF THEY KNEW THEY WOULD HAVE BOMBARDED AND TORN THE CASTLES DOWN.... THE NATIVES ONLY KNEW THAT ONCE YOU WENT IN, YOU DIDNT COME OUT..... THEY ONLY TELL THE STORY OF TAKING SLAVES OVER AGE 12.... BUT WE KNOW THERE IS TOO MUCH DOCUMENTARY IN AMERICA OF THEM BRINGING OVER CHILDREN....THAT PART OF THE STORY THEY REFUSE TO REVEAL..... I MADE IT A POINT TO ASK EACH GUIDE WHERE THEY KEPT THE CHILDREN ... read more

The Ghana Totality caper. (Experienced on 29th March 2006) Going to Ghana wasn't something I'd ever considered, so when I answered Dr. Peter Martinez's phone call the last thing I expected was to be invited to join the South African team from SAAO to fly up to view a solar eclipse at the University of the Cape Coast in Ghana. I'd once, in December 2002, tried to view a solar eclipse. We'd driven from Cape Town to Limpopo Province in the far North of the country, a three day drive, but had been thwarted by cloud. At the time I'd thought that that was the last opportunity I'd ever have to view totality, but thundering down the runway towards totality, I realise that I was totally wrong. Ghana. An unknown quantity. Surfing the web doesn't answer ... read more

hello everyone! so sorry that i have not updated in a while. i just got back from a week in komenda, the "rural village" component of the semester. first off - komenda was not nearly as rural as i expected - more like the suburbs ;) i lived in a house (with electricity, but no running water) right on the beach which was awesome. there was sand right outside our door and you could hear the waves from the ocean through the window. i stayed with fiona (univ. of redlands) and jackie (umass amherst) which was so much fun. we seriously talked about every possible subject you could imagine (EVERYTHING lol) and i can basically recite their life stories, as they can mine. komenda was definitely more like a little vacation than school (as though all ... read more

Well, it's been a long time since our last blog entry! We've tried a few times, but internet access has been so difficult in Ghana we've waited till we got to Dubai to add this. Either the internet has been so slow as to be useless, or the keyboard has had most of the letters rubbed off, or the symbols written on the keys bear no relation to the symbol that appears on the screen, or the best explanation we've heard for the non-availability of service has been the weather. The internet in Ghana apparently doesn't like it too hot!! Luckily the web in Dubai is obviously made of sterner stuff, and is prepared to brave the 37C and 50% humidity, for probably longer than we are, in the non-airconditioned internet cafe just round from our ... read more

Wow! So much has happened in the last two days! Yesterday we went to Kakum National Park and did the canopy walkway = these bridges made out of rope and wood that are suspended hundreds of feet above the jungle floor. It was such an incredible, unforgettable experience. Then we met the Nana-hemaa, Queenmother, from the Efutu village. She is such an amazing woman - very well put together, wise, kind, funny, everything! And she is totally the mother type - the mother to the whole community! She said that when she is driving around if she sees a young lady with a skirt too tight she will make her driver pull over and yell at the lady! How funny right?! Today we went to Elmina Castle, which was sadder than I thought. It is the ... read more

Sooooo I am HERE!! It is ridiculous - I still feel like the full gravity of the fact that I am in Ghana has not yet hit me. So quick run through of what I have been up to: arrived in Accra on Friday night (it is dark outside by 6:30 pm each night) and made it through customs easily to be greeted by Aunty Nana, our academic director. Then we went to a hostel in Accra for food and introductions and sleep. The very next morning we loaded up on a bus (about 16 of us) and drove the 3 hours to Cape Coast, our home away from home. The first few nights in Cape Coast we stayed at Jacaranda Guest House which was... interesting. My roomie (Jocelyn from Carleton) and I picked out what ... read more

Before I left for Ghana, one of my professors at Stanford told me that I HAD to visit the canopy walk at Kakum National Park (near Cape Coast) while I was here. So, with just a little over a week left and without any other Obrunis to go with (Zach left last week after getting malaria), I packed my bags and went to Cape Coast on Friday night with Davis, the guard from CDD. The trip there was relatively uneventful but, just as we were nearing Cape Coast, Davis turned to me for some money and I realized that he expected me to pay for his entire trip (ie he had NO money on him). In retrospect, I guess that was fair, considering that he was serving as my personal translator and guide for two days, ... read more

Heya everyone I'm back in Burkina now, but I promised a rundown of my holiday. So here it is! So I arrived in Accra on the 8th with no drama whatsoever, which was nice. Chantal was waiting for me at the airport, and we went directly to the house of our colleague who was nice enough to put us up. He's got this enormous but largely unfurnished house in Accra, and we gladly crashed on a couple of mattresses on the floor for free. :) Chantal had already been in town a few days, so she took me out to show me the town a bit. Taxis are super cheap there, about $2 so it's really convenient to get around. At some point we decided it would be fun to get hair extensions (see previous post) ... read more

We unexpectedly find ourselves back in the UK. Claire's dad, Peter, has been taken seriously ill, and we've returned for two weeks to see him and to support Claire's mum, Janet. He's been very unwell for some years and this is the latest in a number of setbacks. Although he is terminally ill, he seems fairly stable for the moment, and we hope to return to Ghana on the 19th. These two weeks back also give us a chance to reflect on our experiences in Ghana, and to update this blog, internet access not being that convenient or reliable near where we were staying! Ghana is the least developed place we've ever been to. Poverty is all around, even more so than in Goa. There, mass tourism hasn't eliminated poverty in the least, but has provided ... read more
