This weekend was supposed to be the weekend that Rus left, and so on Saturday I went down to Accra to see him off. However, Saturday morning he decided he really didn't want to go home, and so he extended his flights to this weekend instead! I don't think he was planning on telling me and was going to turn up to surprise me this weekend when we go to see Louise off, but I had to stay in Accra until Monday (when he was supposed to be leaving) so I could collect my passport. Ghana seems to have brought in a new law stating that all phone SIM cards must be registered, deadline July, or your phone gets cut off. The only issue being you need photographic ID to register it and since the loss ... read more

Six days before departure we are all getting ready for our trip. We will be flying from Vancouver to Accra via Amsterdam on KLM. Still waiting for our visas to be returned from the High Commission in Ottawa. Our fingers are crossed that they will arrive in time! Our group has sent enough money ahead of time to purchase 350 mosquito nets for distribution to hospitals and orphanages in the Sunyani area while we are there. Our team members are Past District Governor Ross White ( Rotary Club of Nanaimo), Gordon Butt ( Duncan Rotary Club), Laraine Butt, Garry Cox (Rotary Club of Parksville AM), Alexis Hammer, Ken Hammer (Nanaimo Daybreak Rotary Club), Don Luke (Rotary Club of Parksville AM), Michael Procter (Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach).... read more

Had a great last day of training today before heading back to Accra, we completed an accident investigation, Myself, Gideon and Edmond built a fake Accident where all of the Safety Reps had to investigate it, Gideon was the evil manager which was fum for him as it was completely out of character for him, the guys all enjoyed themselves. At the end of the training the team were all keen to have their photo taken with me - training in Africa is a bit like going to a wedding, holding that permanent smile at cameras for absolutely ages :) Edmond took Gideon and I into the main site to see the pits - they are HUGE I couldnt see any gold but apparently thats normal, the gold needs to be processed before it comes out ... read more

“Why is the black man at the bottom of the world? Whoa right? This is the question I was asked independently from two of our local helpers. It was really sudden for me too. I would need to walk to a certain spot on our survey grid to set up or fix a measuring station so I ask one of the guys to come along and help. Then it’s just the two of us walking the trail through the grass. We would introduce ourselves to the other, ask “where do you live?” then they’d follow up with “Why is the black man poorer than all others.” They seemed to expect a short and quick answer and we didn’t have much time so I managed to come up with something. One guy remained unconvinced and the other ... read more

I’ve had a few requests to revive the old travel blog so here goes. I’ve started writing a series about living in the US and the funny things I have seen or had to do but that’ll come later. I’ll try to write about my time in Ghana while I’m here and things are fresh in mind. To help give this entry a bit of a framework I’ll describe a bit of its geography. Ghana is on the west coast of Africa, west of Togo and Nigeria and just east of Cote D’Ivoire. I flew into the capital, Accra, over 24 hours from Denver to Heathrow and Heathrow to Accra. It was a pretty good flight, business class, which was pretty cool, I learned that the brits make a decent imitation caesar. Since I left at ... read more

No, that title doesn't mean I have started eating red meat again now that I'm in Ghana. It's actually a slang word that today's story revolves around. There is a brand of candy-coated peanuts here called Burger that are quite tasty, and used to be made abroad. If you know Ghana, importing a peanut product makes no sense, since they produce a ton of peanuts here. It would be like Iowa calling Massachusetts for some corn shipments. Thankfully they stopped making the Burger-brand peanut snacks abroad a few years ago, saving transport costs and keeping the jobs and income in-country. But they didn't start doing this before Burger had become slang for a foreigner with deep pockets. So I should have been suspicious when the loan officer that has been escorting our research teams to the ... read more

Greetings from Sunyani, capital of the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, right near the border with Ivory Coast. So the internet may be down and out, but I am in high, high spirits. We just finished our first of two weeks of data collection, and it feels great to be getting out of the offices and theoretical realm of papers, and actually talking with people--and playing with their kids. After the first three weeks in Ghana's two largest cities, I had a very incomplete perspective on this country, but that has changed this week. Every day me and six Ghanaian researchers (four students, two employees of the organization), meet up with a man they call "The General," who takes us in a taxi down a red clay road to some crossroads city, small town or other ... read more

Hi everyone! Have tried to send something for almost two weeks. Between lost connections and computer failure.... A few words about Ghana and where I am. Aworowa is a village in Techiman district, in the Brong-Ahafo region. Hopefully, you can locate on a map. Is northwest of Kumasi, a large city and headquarters of the Ashanti region. Aworowa consists of a small town and surrounding rural homes. My position is at the Aworowa Health Center, aka Aworowa Clinic. About a 10 minute taxi ride from Techiman (costs $.50), a small city with huge outdoor market, and full array of businesses and bustling activity. Work has picked up sufficiently at the clinic. Not the most stimulating, but I am helping, and the staff are thanking me and appreciating my work. Most helpful is going with nurse Emelia ... read more

Wishing Kenya well. and welcome to Ghana! Leaving Kenya was bittersweet. Time to go, but also wanting to stay. After three months, was attached to the Dago/Ranen community, Odoyo family, and other friends. My brief stay with the Maasai only showed me how much I missed when my two week program scheduled for February was cancelled. But, the short time there was valuable in making a connection with program hosts and community leaders, Emmanuel and wife Lilian. Also, in introduction to Maasai culture, basic history - had previously read, but got personal insight - and current lifestyle in the Transmara, which may be in the southern Rift Valley. Not sure where the boundary is. Though a short time with the people, they are lovely. Emmanuel and Lilian are saintly people, giving all to their community. They ... read more
