Gabriel and Michael are going to Lake Awasa for half-term. Gabriel is going for the excellent birdwatching, Michael is going just to get out of Addis. Gabriel stows his pack on the roof, the more paranoid Michael elects to sit on the bus for ten hours with his pack on his knee. This is OK, but Gabriel knows he will be sharing a seat with Michael and wishes he wasn't such ust a neurotic jerk. In comparison to the typical passengers, M & G are giants, and their packs are giants' packs. The first part of the journey is totally uneventful. They have been Ethiopia long enough to have no interest in talking to the kind of jeks who talk to faranj on buses. The annoying kids, chickens, dogs and goats are exactly that: annoyances. They ... read more

Whirlwind exploration of Ethiopia, well, the Wondo Genet watershed region towards the south to be exact, with a few days of Addis Ababa and the Bale mountains thrown in. I was very confused when told that we would be going to Ethiopia for our summer tropical forestry course. Forests? in Ethiopia? I was pleasantly surprised. We visited working forests, sacred forests, public forests that are being cleared illegally for settlement and firewood, and community managed forests. The natural forests we visited were dominated by Juniper and Podocarpus - incredulous species if given the opportunity to grow. Unfortunately, the population pressure makes this quite an oddity. As for wildlife, there were colobus monkeys, baboons, some other type of monkey that was all over the campus where we stayed, warthogs, horn-bills - these were the exciting ones. We ... read more

We headed south into faranji (white person/foreigner) frenzy zone with inflated prices for foreigners, self-appointed guides and children that scream “YOU,YOU,YOU” and “HIGHLAND! HIGHLAND!” (water bottles) and ask for money. It was enough to send us completely mad. Our first stop was the lakeside town of Awasa. It was an interesting bus journey. Because the bus was not full when we arrived, rather than just waiting at the station, we drove around the block over and over again for about 45 minutes until it filled up. It was a long hot journey and for the first time we really experienced Ethiopians fear of fresh air in the bus. First we were asked to close the window because a child had been sick (Matt did try to reason that fresh air would be good for her), then ... read more

I wrote this just after my arrival in Addis, just so that I could keep a clear idea of my first impressions. The Arrival Arriving at around about 1pm Ethiopian time - or was it later? I was to find that nothing runs on time here, even the airlines. I was met at the airport by Reiza - a volunteer from the Phillipines who has been in Ethiopia for about a year I think. She was to be one of the four volunteers who had - again - volunteered to be our ‘guides’ during the In Country Training Course. Galetta and Lyunesh, who work at the VSO Programme Office, were also part of the orientation team. There was little time to get any sense of Ethiopia. Our exit from the airport was quite painless, if not ... read more

For our survey we are measuring child nutrition and weight, so we want to record if the child has been sick or is sick. Question 32 is “Does this child currently have diarrhea?” While we were recording a mother’s weight and height, her year-and-a-half old son squatted down and let out some 32 through his pants and on the floor. I record the data from the survey to electronic form, and when I got to question #32 I couldn’t help but laugh. Yes, that poor kid definitely has diarrhea currently.... read more

I leave Jimma tomorrow morning; ending one journey and starting another. It’s not really sad, though I will miss some of the girls that work at the internet café. We tried to tie all the loose ends we could. I took some more pictures; we went to the park and took a horse carriage taxi. Still trying to finish some stuff to do with the study, Ned might be able to help us finish some administrative type stuff. We haven’t seen Joseph in a week, but we left him a letter earlier today. Maybe he will come by. Tomorrow we will be in Addis, eating real food at Serenade. I can’t wait. Hopefully I will be able to ship my souvenirs home from the post in Addis. I might not be able to add to the ... read more

Ned and I went to the Jimma Museum on the weekend, my companion didn’t feel well. The Americans said that if you have zero expectations, you would be pleased with museum. I had my student ID and got in for Birr 3 instead of the usual Birr 25 for foreigners. They advertised photos for Birr 5, but the guy said “no” for some reason? The guy/curator said there wasn’t an English tour, which we were cool with. Two Jimma University students were there and we all went in together. The curator gave the students a tour and we sort of tagged along and conversed using broken English and acting out our perceived uses for some questionable objects. Like the Americans said, if you have zero expectations, it’s a pretty good museum. The first room had a ... read more

Well, we are finally finished our survey. We needed 377 respondents to have a decent survey and we got a total of 438. Sweet. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without our 2nd data collector, the son of the guy I just happened to meet at the internet café. He was awesome. All of the data is entered; there are almost 100 variables for every 1 participant, though not all participants have all variables. We actually have statistically significant results, on a subject that appears to still be inconclusive to researchers. Perhaps because of this we will be able to publish our results. I am excited. ... read more

Shortly after sending out the photos and emails, the Americans from the NGO called and said that there is actually a group of foreigners who happen to be working in Addis for the next week and a half on facial abnormalities. They saw the pics and agreed to see her. She would be leaving soon. Alright, sweet…wait a second, we were told to keep her papers for her because we were supposed to take her back to Jimma Hospital on Monday. Crap. I called the saint the next morning and he said she should have her papers and x-rays, even if they are poor quality and will be taken again. So I called the Sisters to make sure she was still there. She was still there but she might be leaving after lunch or she would ... read more

Thursday night was very busy for the hotels in Jimma. I later found out that the head of this region, Oromiya, came through with his entourage. We ran into some serious Czech travelers that we met before. They have been to over 50 countries and go to really remote regions. Anyways, I saw the girl/wife first and asked how it was going. They had just finished 13 hours of bus travel. It was raining heavily and the roads were barely passable. She said every hotel was packed, or over charging. Syf had a room which was “shit” in her opinion and they wanted some outrageous sum for it. Central was full, and Coffee land wanted Birr 300. So I said, “ok, come with me, I know the owner…kind of.” We went up to Coffee Land and ... read more
