Beginning of week 2 - Nov. 7 Saturday we had our first experience applying the chicka (mud) to the walls of a structure. A mixture of fine dirt, water and straw is formed into balls and thrown against the stick frame wall, then smeared to fill in the spaces. There was much apprehension towards this job because of what we knew to be in the mud around most homes here. It was explained that this chicka dirt is obtained from quarries and cleaned before it is delivered, as well as the straw. It turned out to be quite fun, although incredibly messy, especially when one is inside the room, handing the chicka balls to the chicka plasterer. The Habesha work barefoot and bare-handed, while we're all covered up, including gloves. Mud is literally flying and I ... read more

Nov. 3 A little info about our accommodation in Addis. The Wabe Shebelle Hotel, where the team is staying, is a long established hotel, probably formerly posh, where many visiting groups stay. Presently, we are sharing the facility with a medical volunteer team from Seattle, who are involved in training staff at a local hospital, 180 newly minted Ethiopian doctors, who are in training before they are dispersed to complete their 5-year term of required service to repay the cost of their education; a male athletic team of some sort and various tour groups and individuals. The hotel is a bit shabby and was recently returned by the government to the grandson of Haile Selassie. Perhaps it will be restored to its prior grandeur. It appears that locals are subject to frisking and bag searches, regardless ... read more

Happy Halloween everyone! I heard you got a bit of snow this past week, hopefully everyone has power. Weather forecast here in Addis: Sunny and 70 degrees for the next 10 days(I had to rub it in a little). I know its been a while since I updated but its been hectic the past few weeks. As for the title to this post...... The older boys have organized a football tournament on the small field we have and I was picked to play on one of the teams( we are 4-1 by the way, about to become the champions). However the first game they asked me to play striker or forward, whatever you want to call it. Late into the first game I took a shot that sailed over the goal and straight into a window at ... read more

The trip started out rather poorly. Arrived in time at SFO thanks to Moose, checked my luggage through to Addis and got to the boarding gate in plenty of time. Then I learn, oh-oh, the flight is delayed, and I have a 55 minute window between deplaning and boarding my next flight in Amsterdam. Find out some inspectors are going over the plane before boarding can be allowed. We leave 45 minutes late - I'm screwed. Add to that the fact that I'm in a middle seat on a 10 hour flight. 3 movies and 2 meals later, we finally land in Amsterdam at 9:50 am and my next flight leaves at 10:10. I have been rebooked on a flight scheduled to leave in an hour via Nairobi. I have no way to let Boots and ... read more

Take yourself back to 29 October 2004... Where were you? What were you doing? I was at the Sheraton, drinking screw drivers, teaching Mary (my host sister) how to swim and getting caught up in an Ethiopian wedding. Oh, that's right- that was yesterday!!! Yes, folks, Ethiopia is quite literally 7 years behind. I'm sitting here with a beer, feeling quite illegal- the drinking age here is 18, and I am apparently 14 years old right now. How rebellious!!! Also, just quietly, perhaps a West Australian calendar for 2012 wasn't the best gift idea? I also planned my stay so that I would be here for Christmas- I am meant to leave on 27 December. Turns out Ethiopia's christmas is in January. Genius, Sarah, pure genius. This isn't an entry to inform you so much of ... read more

Oakland, CA: Tomorrow I begin my journey to Ethiopia for another Habitat for Humanity Global Village build. First leg will be flying from San Francisco to Amsterdam on KLM. There I will run, run, run through Schiphol to catch the next flight to Addis Ababa. I have only a 55 minute gap between arrival and departure. Fortunately, Boots and Ramsay will be on the 2nd flight, so maybe they can hold the plane for me! In addition to my personal luggage, which includes tools for the build, food to snack on, innumerable electronics (and their accompanying adapter/chargers) and toys for kids, I've packed a medium sized duffle bag filled with school supplies, some toys and diapers to donate to the Children's Home Society and Family Services in Addis. This is the agency through which my cousin ... read more

From the red sea to the dead sea, I think I left off just before our trip to Madaba in Jordan. Madaba was pretty good- we went and saw a church, and some others went to Jerash, but I think we all agreed that it isn't a necessary part of the Jordan trip. When we left from Madaba we headed to Amman, via the Dead Sea. You'd be surprised by how much greenery is on the way to the dead sea- but, there you go! We were told that if we had any cuts we would definitely feel them once we got into the sea (which is crazy salty). Fortunately I wasn't one of the few who had shaved their legs that morning haha but trust me, there was plenty of stinging on my end too! ... read more

Long flight to Addis Ababa but all goes to plan. The expected thumped landing delivers the familiar airport before me. Short queues for visa (they failed to give me the multi-entry visa I requested last time around), then through short but slow queue for immigration and out onto the buggy, dusty tarmac of Addis. The sun is shining warmly and the permanent pollution haze hangs heavy over the city as I wait for my lift to arrive. My very welcome lift arrives, along with my two mountain companions - RL & JW. JW I am meeting for the first time but it is truly wonderful to see RL again – she’s the reason I’m here, the reason I’m heading for the Simien. So, via the gamble of an Addis cashpoint visit and a visit to the ... read more

Happy finding of the true cross(Meskel). Last Wednesday was the biggest holiday in Ethiopia, where people from all around go to Meskel Square in Addis Ababa to celebrate. If any of you would like to know more details about it check out this Wikipedia description http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meskel. I went into the city early with my new Swedish friend Georg to get ourselves a coffee pot and some machiattos from Tomoca( the most famous coffee place in the capital). On our way there we met 3 nice local guys around our age who were getting ready to celebrate Meskel and offered to show us how to get to Tomoca as well as help find us a coffee pot. It was nice to talk to some locals who were not looking to get money from us(or so we thought). ... read more

The year just became 2004 in Ethiopia. I have been wondering as well why that is, and Still trying to figure out how to get pictures on here, soon enough! Well last weekend I spent New Years Day at my new friend Ato Simon Mechale house. His wonderful family and he were incredibly welcoming, making me feel right at home. The meal that we had was incredible, Ethiopian food at its finest! I will explain more about it when I get those pictures up. As for more about the kids/orphanage, I found out that I will be teaching Comprehensive English grades 1-4! We will see how that works out with the language barrier, but I am really excited non the less. The children have been so welcoming, the girls more than the boys but I think ... read more
