Another early morning…up at 6:30am. I thought this was supposed to be a relaxing vacation. I ate a quick breakfast with my fellow tour participants and disembarked from the ship at 7:30am. We meet up with our tour guide for Luxor, Mohammad, who brings us to the hotel. Ostensibly, we are staying at a 5-Star hotel, but based on the wafer thin mattress and push button TV (you can select between UHF and VHF…and can even manually tune each of the 10 push button channels on the TV)…I am a little skeptical of the rating. Obviously, this is not a 5-Star hotel based on the Michelin (they don’t just make tires) standard. After getting up so early, we are rewarded with the news that we will not start our tour until 3:00pm, since we need to ... read more

After 17 hrs on da bus (which stopped every hour or so, for no other reason that I could see than that the driver needed a ciggy!) it was so good to get into Dahab. We went & had brekky (10ep=2 bucks) then checked out the scene & then had a swim & pulled up a deckchair on the h2o to catch some rays. The next week consisted of snorkelling, big seafood feeds, she-sha, getting hassled to go into shops or restos, batgammin & a beer, sunsets, a day trip to blue hole for a snorkel & a day trip to Mt Sinai & St Katherine’s monastery. The time soon came to go back to Cairo & fly to London, but being a Q.L.Der I was reluctant to leave this homely like place (sun & reef). ... read more

Haggle tips for the wise! * There first price will be at least 50% more than what they will except. * Pretend not really to want the item u r tryin to get. * Don't let a guy take u into a shop, because his commission will be added on the price. * Start low & don't budge much. * Begin to walk off @ least once. * Sit & have a tea & a she-sha with the owner. On the 1 hand no one likes gettin ripped off but when u think about it, it;s usally a tiny amount of $$ to u but a huge amount to them. but it's a bit of fun gettin them down! then u can always give them extra after u win the haggle, good luck! The last week has been all about relaxation and has kind of felt like a vacation from the vacation. Sharm El Sheikh - Hilton Style From Luxor, we had pre-booked a flight to Sharm El Sheikh on the Sinai peninsula. This way we avoided taking a ferry across the Red Sea. You might remember a couple of months ago, hearing about that ferry that sank in the Red Sea. Sharm El Sheikh is a resort town for Europeans and Brits (kind of like a Caribbean island) and we were treating ourselves to 4 nights at the Hilton Fayrouz Village Resort in Na'ama Bay on Paul's reward points (yes, that means a 5 star resort absolutely free!). We checked in and were treated like royalty due to Paul's Hilton HHonors Diamond status - receiving a free upgrade ... read more

Edfu Another early day, as we met our tour guide, Samy, at 6:45am. We grabbed a horse drawn carriage and heading to the Temple of Horus, the falcon god. This is considered the best preserved of all the Egyptian temples, having been buried beneath the sand until it was rediscovered in the 19th Century. It was actually built by the Romans starting in 237 B.C, and finished 180 years later. We toured the temple for an hour, and I unfortunately saw more destruction of the carved reliefs by the Coptic Christians; however the temple was still plenty impressive. One the way back to the boat, I had a chance to buy a decent cotton robe for myself…but passed on the head scarf. I have come to appreciate that there is a premium to be paid for ... read more

Still no luggage…I wonder what my L.L. Bean fleece will fetch on eBay. Do the French even have eBay? I really could have used the fleece, and jeans too, last night as the evenings are cool on the Nile. Visit to Abu Simbel In the morning we all got up early to take a trip to Abu Simbel, 280km southwest of Aswan. This wasn’t part of the original itinerary, but since every one else wanted to go, I decided to go too (I’m all about groupthink). Some of the group got up at 3AM to take a 3 hour drive to Abu Simbel...which was done with a police escort. The rest of us decided to take a plane to get there, so got to sleep in until 6:30. Airport security was laughable…with the security guards jokingly ... read more

Thats hello in Arabic by the way! See - i'm starting to learn the language already!! So now coming to you from Aswan, 800km south of cairo - much nicer than Cairo coz its just a small town so it's nowhere near as manic and busy and the people are even friendlier! We got here on an epic train journey which took 12 hours, im still recovering from that journey now! The heat doesn't make it better, this close to the equator it's very hot in the sun, but we're coping so far! Have done a few cool things here, had a ride on a pretty damn ugly camel into the desert to see a deserted monastry. That journey has made the sore legs from the train journey even worse as they are bloddy awkward to ... read more

We enbarked on our 2 nite falucca journey in the arve with our fellow passangers (An old canadian couple, french couple, japanese gal & another aussie lad) All in the capable..ish hands of captain happy ( how thought that he was bob marley) and crommy the cook/mate(basically Capt'n happy's bitch!) We had a variety packed bread, bread, and bread breakfast on the train. We had a selection consisting of a piece of white bread, a croissant, and a hamburger bun. Mmm…bread. Of course I needed to tip the porter (who wasn’t afraid to ask for it) before I got off the train. Once we got to the hotel, I talked with Ahmed to see if my luggage had arrived yet in Cairo. Nope. I now fear for the safety of Milkshake, my stuffed cow. Who knows what depraved things French airline baggage handlers could do with a stuffed cow after a heavy night of drinking my liquor. Hopefully they are not making brie out of him. Luckily the hotel we are staying at here, the Isis Hotel, is much better than the one we stayed at ... read more

My wife Enid, and I went in December 2005, it was an offer on the net which we could not refuse, (cheap!) We stayed at the Sofitel in Karnak, which was delightful. We did all the trips that we could afford, and they were all well worth it! If you have back problems though, the camel safari may not suit you! It did me in for days, I was walking like a chimpanzee!!! Took lots of pictures plus we met a nice couple from Wakefield who we became firm friends with. We stayed at their place recently and they have stayed over at our-and -despite the language barrier, they can nearly understand me!!! ... read more
