Many thanks for the birthday greetings. K couldn't miss up on one more day of scuba diving but I decided it was time for a day off. I spent it very pleasantly under a shady umbrella beside one of the hotel's pools reading and writing. About 5 p.m. a small birthday cake was delivered to the room. We will sample it after dinner at our favourite spot in the hotel complex - an Italian Restaurant that overlooks the Red Sea. For some strange reason, it doesn't get very busy. I don't know why not as the food is lovely and the guitarist is excellent. I can't imagine a more romantic location.... read more

The main attraction along the southern tip of Sinai is scuba diving and we have been renewing our PADI certifications. Today we joined a group going to Ras Mohammed Park, considered to be the jewel in the crown of Red Sea dive locations. The drift dive from Shark Reef to Yolanda Reef is considered to be one of the top three dives in the world. There was certainly plenty to see in the clear turquoise waters; huge fan corals and all manner of brightly coloured fish and plant life including a large Moray Eel hidden in the reef and a blue spotted Ray cruising lazily. The highlight was a large turtle who didn't seem to mind dining in front of an enthralled audience, even when the underwater cameras began to roll.... read more

Hi guys Sorry in advance that this is a bit of a long one - so please bear with me. If you want to skip it do it and just take a look at the photos..... Well Tim and I are back from our holiday and Egypt and luckily I managed to come back with a tan - you should expect that considering that the minimum temperature was around 27C and the hottest day was 34C! It was definitely an adventure and an eye opener to a completely different culture, and to be honest I was quite pleasantly surprised by the friendliness and generosity of the Egyptian people, especially when you think you are trying to be "had" everywhere you go. Upon arrival at Sharm we had to get Visas so we could visit Cairo, and ... read more

Safaga Our main purpose of docking in Safaga, Egypt is to go to Luxor and visit the Valley of the Kings and Temple of Karnac. We boarded our bus (#4 of 16!) at 6:45 for the four hour trip to Luxor. Because we were traveling in an escorted convoy, we had to wait for all of the buses to be ready, and as a result, it was closer to eight before we got started. The police cars stopped traffic at busy intersections so all of the buses could pass. There was an armed guard on the bus as well. We crossed over the Red Sea Mountains to reach the Nile Valley and the city of Luxor. Most of the land was sand and desert until we reached the valley, although we passed a couple of villages ... read more

Ahh, now this is how a holiday should be. Relaxing on a large boat, sparkling water, hot sun, nothing to do but sleep and sunbathe! We took a long five hour journey to Hurghada on 27 March. All foreigners are required to travel in a daily convoy when travelling between Luxor and Hurghada. So we duly turned up ready to depart at 2pm with all the tour buses. The police take their duty seriously, but anyone wearing a black thick wool uniform in the 40+ heat can't have all thier camels in the top paddock. Unfortunately our overland truck doesn't keep up with the speedy flash tour buses and they get rather stressed at us being so slow - the convoy went off into the distance and they kept waving for us to go faster. So ... read more

March 25 - 27, 2008. Sharm eL Sheikh We arrived in Sharm el Sheikh, on the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, on Tuesday evening at the Savoy Resort after a short flight from Luxor. Looking forward to a couple of days of relaxing. Wednesday we spent the day at the resort with some scuba diving and a day relaxing at the pool and beach. I did 2 dives at the reef very close to the resort. The dive site I visited is just a short walk out on a jetty, into the water and presto you are at the reef. This is a nice reef with decent coral and a fair amount of fish. We covered both ends of the reef and the start of a large canyon that goes down into the Red Sea. It ... read more
