Ahh, now this is how a holiday should be. Relaxing on a large boat, sparkling water, hot sun, nothing to do but sleep and sunbathe! We took a long five hour journey to Hurghada on 27 March. All foreigners are required to travel in a daily convoy when travelling between Luxor and Hurghada. So we duly turned up ready to depart at 2pm with all the tour buses. The police take their duty seriously, but anyone wearing a black thick wool uniform in the 40+ heat can't have all thier camels in the top paddock. Unfortunately our overland truck doesn't keep up with the speedy flash tour buses and they get rather stressed at us being so slow - the convoy went off into the distance and they kept waving for us to go faster. After Luxor we arrived 5 hrs later by bus to the red sea coast, in Hurghada. we arrived at night, so we didn't get a chance to peek at the famed waters until morning, when we woke up and took a look on our balcony. wow! if expectations were ever met, this was it! gorgeous crystal clear tourquoise waters were spread out on the horizon. the end of february is still a little early for full fleged beaching, but nonetheless the tourist were there. the entire coastline is bought up by 4/5 star hotels/resteraunts/bars, so there isnt a public beach, unfortunatly. strange...right? so instead we would go to hotels and pay a fee to soak in the nature, or go to a restaurant and drink/eat their mandatory fees away. it definately had the packaged 2 week ... read more

THe last Month and a half have been a whirlwind and I feel like one big sigh of relief now that it is over. As I mentioned, I had a blast with family visiting on and off for four weeks!!!It was a great visit and the only negative thing is that it opened up some homesickness that I really hadn't felt before. During that time I also went through my first report card experience, two Pro-D days at school in preparation for our accredidation by the BC Ministry of Education in January, and three days of parent-teacher interviews. We also have the school play going on, and I am still coaching all the soccer teams!!! WHEW! Christmas break comes in just over a week and then its off to Greece. Report cards were crazy...12 different classes ... read more

BACK ON LAND So yeah.. It’s been a while, times fly by down here. Maybe time for an update. The middle of May, while M was going to do a steam course Divemaster, C was already to start the training on the liveaboards with the one and only trainer of the company: Ahmed. Just before he was going out for his first 6-day trip we decided to move again to another apartment, but this time in another building. Because it’s one thing to not have a proper working aircon in more then 40˚C, but when the smell hanging around the apartment is irresolvable, the worn out furniture doesn’t attract to be seated on, the merciless mosquito’s have their mind set on sucking every last drip of blood out of your body and the cockroaches start running ... read more

Ok, so we are all ready to begin the trip across the desert, we have our water, we have some food, we have stored stuff in the truck and eaten our last ice cream cone. Oh, wait, we need a driver. Ours broke himself jumping off the third floor balcony into the swimming pool. Broke both his legs. Fortunately, this camp is the home base for Oasis' trucks--and another tour going the other way just arrived a couple of days ago. So we get to go on the trip after all, with a new driver!! Picture is Greg with his casts and crutches. Now we have to listen to him whine for two days while we drive from Aswan to Hurgada where he will fly back to England. ... read more

Just arrived and what can we say… no more moschilla. Day1: From the second a drunken Anders picked us up, he threw us in to our new apartment that his girlfriend Jane hooked us up with. So that was sorted! Being Anders birthday the following day, we spent that night drinking at his favorite bar and at another dodgy Dutch bar in the small hours. Day2: Michelle makes an Italian wetsuit tailor scratch his head when ordering a custom made wetsuit with a Bruce Lee design. That will be a beauty, wait for those photos. Day3: We get a job with the most prestigious live aboard company in Egypt. After M is done with her training, MiniCloud will have their own boat, cruising the red sea! Later this day, we moved to our second apartment, one ... read more

Visited Karnak Temple for a couple of hours in the morning before we were due to leave Luxor. The temple & surrounding area was just such an amazing thing to see. It is quite an awesome structure to have survived this long & I am sure would have been an even more spectacular sight in it´s heyday. It is just such a pity so many ancient relics have been built upon & are now probably lost forever. Caught our local bus mid morning, which thankfully wasn´t actually very local at all. It had all it´s windows, comfy seats, a clean floor & even curtains! It was a six hour drive to Hurgada on the Red Sea & we cabed it to the hotel & rested for an hour or so before dinner. We ate pizza at ... read more

As-Salaam wa 3laykum! So I've been here about ten days, and thus far have had a decent time. At the beginning I mostly just slept, ate really good falafel, and attended my "crash-course in colloquial arabic" class until we went to orientation at the Red Sea. You know how I said I was scared that I had forgotten all my Arabic and wouldn't be able to speak to anyone? Well, the bad part is that yes, I did forget a lot of it, but the good part is that for 3miya (colloquial) everything changed--so it's probably a blessing that I didn't waste my time trying to re-learn Modern Standard Arabic (MSA--which is all they teach at Penn). Someone in my class suggested that the best way to get a handle on the difference is to think ... read more

A new chapter to my travelblog!! (Slightly delayed posting as usual) Me and Simone (younger sister) had decided it was time to take a break from our busy studies and booked a lastminute - splurged a little - and that's how we ended up in Egypt 2 weeks later! Being two girls on holiday alone in this male-oriented society was (how shall I put it) interesting, and we certainly got enough attention to give us an ego boost. Especially at the bazaars (markets) there was a lot of hissing and Arabic whispering and they said "Shakira" or "Hello- you are like two beautiful cats!" and "Marry me I will pay 100,000 camels" (a good offer) We felt we should stay reasonably covered up for cultural reasons even though it was HOT (30-35 degrees) not that everyone ... read more
