Thats right Egypt! A destination untouristed? Definitately not. There are more tourists here than people in Clearwater. Cairo is cool. Your typical big city overly influrenced by westen idealiogies. Non the less still beautiful in its own right, even if they have a TGI Fridays that dosent serve beer.... read more

So I'm here! This will be a quick update as I've fallen well behind. Yes...I can now say I've been to the Pyramids of Giza. Wow! Was really fabulous. Getting into Cairo was...interesting. On the way from the airport to hotel counted no less than 6 accidents...traffic is MAD! In total, spent a couple of days in Alexandria and a couple in Cairo then joined the group for the 'Nile Safari' tour. Feel very lucky, group is wonderful and my room mate is a terrific match! Most from Oz and NZ with a couple of Brits, 1 American and 1 Canadian (me;) mixed in to keep it interesting! Pyramids were on the second day...I think the photos we all have seen before show it so I've tried to include my little 'odd' shots to mix it ... read more

Camels, Sand and Pyramids make good Egyptian coffee What possibly could be written about Cairo and the pyramids that hasn't already been written? Besided the nightmare of getting here (my flight was cancelled the last minute from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia to Cairo) I more or less expected what I have experienced. Uh...besides the street children, trinket hawkers, smell of camel dung, expensive taxis from the airport and Pizza Hut. Travis and I once again embarked on another adventure that took us to Egypt. We had done little, if any, real planning other than our flights, so when we arrived (he 8 hours ahead of me) we wanted to take in as much as we could in the few days we will be here. After checking into the Sheraton Royal Gardens (4 stars and worth both the ... read more

Welcome to Egypt We have made it to the bustling streets of Cairo. All the horror stories of Cairo that I have heard in my research of this place have been so very, very wrong. This is a wonderful city. Even before landing the flight steward on our flight in (on a brand new plane that was nearly empty, which made it very cushy) offered to give us lift into town. We landed after 5:00 and were at our hotel at 6:00. Not a single hassle except for the guy who wanted money for giving me a paper towel in the bathroom. The Ishmalia House Hotel is amazing. We have a birds eye view over the heart of the city, a busy circle know as Tahir Square. The room is huge with wood floors and ... read more

30/03 Got into Cairo airport around 01.30 in the morning. No rooms at airport hotel, got in taxi and ended up in some random hotel somewhere in Cairo !! 30/03 Went to pyramids at Giza from the hotel. Weather was perfect and spent a couple of hours plodding about on 'Michael Jackson' the camel !! Very tired from getting in late on the flight, but it was quite relaxing seeing pyramids by camel... 31/03 Spent the night in the hostel I had booked. Went to check out a local market, but it was seriously shoddy and consisted of people selling belts and some sort of animal dung ! Bumped into an Egyptian whose cousin works at a papyrus shop down town. Chatted over tea for a while and went to look at the shop. Very nice ... read more

Geo: 29.1853, 30.7446Was woken by Tarek at 8.30am to get ready to get off the train. Went back to the Pharoah's Hotel, had a shower, then Shastra and I had lunch at Tikka Chicken- an Egyptian fast food chain. Then after our afternoon nap we caught a taxi to the Khan al Khalli market. This time we went to the tourist section and saw no hanging meat. We bought perfume and perfume bottles- home they make it back to Australia. That night the whole group went out for dinner. Most of the group kicked on, wasn't in the mood, so went back early. I am over Egyptian food- hope Jordanian food is better.... read more

We had heard so many horror stories about Cairo. People warning and warning. Yes they were all true. It's noisy, busy, dirty and hot. Also though it is exciting, friendly, diverse, beautiful, interesting and fun! I wake to the call to prayer and a few hours later descend from our bargain roof top hotel in a very cool marble 1930's art deco stair well and fancy lift to get take away breakfast. I'm not too hot on architecture terms but Cairo has great buildings and once they were even clean and new. It would be easy to get overwhelmed by all the hectic nosie and fumes (as all the people who warned us about the place must have done) and stop appreciating that this city is really cool. Downtown there are beautiful people posing, the girls ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Today was excellent. We drove to the Giza Pryamids. They are amazing. There are three large ones. The biggest one was closed, so we had the option to go into the 2nd largest one, which belonged to the pharaohs son. I was hesitant to go in. It is quite claustrophobic. The height at some sections is only 1.3m and its not very wide- quite cosy when they are people going in and out on the same steps. It was scary and hard to breath when I thought about all the stones above me. The pyramids are not hollow, like I thought they were. They were built 3,000 years ago and took 20 - 30 years to build. They started building the pyramid when the pharaoh started ruling. It took 100,000 workers to build them. ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Had to move to my new shared room this morning. Met my room mate, Shastra. We were glad to have met, as now we wouldn't have to walk around on our own. We decided to try the metro. Walked to the station and still got looks and noises. Metro is clean and was a good way to travel. The first carriage is reserved for women, which was good news for us. We got off at Coptic Cairo- the only area in Egpyt where there are 3 different religions practiced in the small area- Jewish, Muslim and Greek Orhtodox. Saw old churches and cemeteries. We then decided it would be nice to catch the local river bus back downtown. We tried to follow the LP map. We ended up off the beaten track and in ... read more
