March 27th, 2006, Day 81 of our cruise of 105 At sea after Alexandria and Cairo, Egypt Day started at 5:30 am The local police band was playing loudly outside our stateroom by 6am- good for us as we had to get up- some were not so pleased. Convoy of many buses left shortly after 7 for the Pyramids- 3 hours away Awesome My favorite visual memories are of the very armed policemen on white camels stationed on the horizon, on the top of gigantic sand dunes almost encircling the site. My second visual is Terry trying to climb down into the pyramid! Home after 7pm, exhausted, we shopped on the dock for a few souvenirs and dined in our room with our favorite room service item on the menu: club sandwich. Asleep by sailaway at ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Took a bit to get me motivated to leave my room. Finally did at 1.30pm. To save myself from being ripped off by taxi's decided to walk to the Eugptian Musuem. Five minutes of being outside I remembered why I was so reluctant to leave my room- pollution, it is disgusting. According to LP a day in Cairo is like smoking a packet of cigarettes and it is the 2nd most polluted city in the world after Mexico City- great! There are still heaps of men everywhere, I thought they would be working today. This museum is a big mess, stuff everywhere, lots of things in the dark, a few things are labelled, piles of dust on everything.- no smoking signs can be ignored- no touching means you can lean on statues- birds inside ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Had a sleep in, bit nervous about venturing out of my room. Maybe I'll hibernate for a few days until my tour starts. Was woken up by constant beeping- its going to drive me crazy. Got a taxi to the citadel. The cars here are bombs, full of dents and polluting the air. The 20 minute drive was an experience- but no need to worry, the driver had a seatbelt to wear- I didn't! Cairo seems very dirty, crazy traffic, lots of near misses, seems like half the buildings are about to crumble, too many men around- hopefully because it is a Sunday. Made it to the citadel okay. Egypt's rulers once lived here (among the dust and rubble?). There are three mosques here and building began in 1176. The main one attraction is ... read more

Geo: 30.0571, 31.2272Left Luton London airport and flew to Athens and landed in Cairo at 3am. Am glad I organised an airport transfer- that way no one hassled me for a taxi. On the way to the hotel I made a few initial observations about Cairo;- headlights on cars are optional- its compulsory to drive in more than one lane at once- you must beep very, very often, even if the road is empty- they are trying hard to keep this city clean, cleaners were out there picking up rubbish- there are a lot of armed security menMy hotel seems okay. I have a queen size bed- I love it and I'll be starfishing each night. Also got a TV which will be great once I learn Arabic!!... read more

Moustafa picked me up at about 8:30am to start my last day in Cairo. I had to start early to get everything in! We first drove over to the pyramids of Dashur, which are about 20km south of Cairo. Of the three pyramids I ventured into this was by far my favorite! First of all because they are further south than Giza or Saqqara there are fewer tourists, and second of all as a result of the distance they aren't kept up as well and getting inside is much more of an adventure! There are several pyramids at Dashur, but you can only adventure inside the Snofru's Red Pyramid, which is one of the largest pyramids in Egypt, second in size to the great pyramid of Cheops in Giza! (A brief Egypt history note, Snofru was ... read more

Our last day in Jordan was supposed to be "easy downhill' riding; from Wadi Rum down to Aqaba on the Red Sea. But then every Jordanian we had met during our time there informed us the road we were taking was "easy" and "downhill", usually also having no clue as to the distances. We were even once told by the police that it was "easy, only 2km and downhill all the way". Needless to say 10km of uphill followed. But today really should have been easy - we were going down to the coast. We had forgotten about the wind however, something which I am becoming increasingly superstitious about. On the ride north out of Wadi Rum we had a big headwind, the going was hard but hey, its only 10km or so and we turn ... read more

Yesterday, our first full day in Egypt we met up with a friendly edmontonian and went walking in Islamic Cairo. As the guide book says, Islamic Cairo isn't anymore Islamic than the rest of Cairo except of course, coptic cairo. We visited old mosques (here women are aloud into some mosques) gateways, markets, toilets and of course restraunts (coffee houses). One of the incredibe things about Cairo is that it is safe I hope I haven't jinxed myself, but we walk a night, go to the bank, ride the subway and just generally forget we are on the same coninent as Africa. Infact I can say that it feels safer here than my 'hood in Vancouver. People are incredibly nice and welcoming, particularly the vendors and young men ;-) I've been groped a few times in ... read more

Today I finally got to spend some time with Chris! Its been fun exploring Cario on my own with Moustafa, but I came here to visit Chris so it was good to have time with him. We went to Saqqara another pyramid field near Cairo. (Did you know that there are about 70 pyramids in Egypt?! I didn't!) Saqqara is where the infamous step pyramid is located. It was great to get there with chris, he had never been there before! We wandered around the Funerary complex of Zoser (which sounds like the ghoul in ghostbusters!), his pyramid (the step pyramid) and then went inside a second pyramid, the pyramid of Teti. This was the most ornate pyramid I went into! Going deep into this pyramid that looked like a pile of dirt, we were surprised ... read more

After having a lazy morning, I went to the Spa with Chris's friends Bella, Erika and her friend Terri. We each had a Moroccan Bath... quite the experience let me tell you! It involved alot of steam, being bathed by a stranger, and massage.... all while naked. I think that's enough mental images for today! I will admit that the four of us had separate rooms, so it wasn't as crazy as it could've been. But it was an adventure! That night we all went out to dinner and had an early night. The photo was taken the night before along the nile! ... read more

After a very long bus ride back from Dahab, (9 hours!!) I arrived back in Cairo last night. Today was my exploration of the Egypt Antiquities museum and the Citadel. Moustafa was my driver again for the day, he picked me up and dropped me off at the museum. What an experience. Egyptians aren't very good at labeling anything, so I was very glad to have my guide book to tell me a little about what I was looking at! The museum is huge and is dedicated to Pharonic antiquites. It was filled with anything you can think of related to the pharohs! Mummified animals, sarcophagi, statues, ancient papyrus, mummies, and the highlight was the treasures of Tutunkhamun. I saved Tut's stuff for last. So I wandered around the main floor looking at artifacts, and then ... read more
