01 Inside St George

This is inside the church.

Had to move to my new shared room this morning. Met my room mate, Shastra. We were glad to have met, as now we wouldn't have to walk around on our own. We decided to try the metro. Walked to the station and still got looks and noises. Metro is clean and was a good way to travel. The first carriage is reserved for women, which was good news for us. We got off at Coptic Cairo- the only area in Egpyt where there are 3 different religions practiced in the small area- Jewish, Muslim and Greek Orhtodox. Saw old churches and cemeteries.
We then decided it would be nice to catch the local river bus back downtown. We tried to follow the LP map. We ended up off the beaten track and in a village where goats walked in and out of homes, no cars or tourists around- we turned around and got the metro back.
Got off at Sadat and had an Egyptian meal for lunch. Bargained a taxi to take us to Islamic Cairo, near the Khan Al Khalli market. One drove off- he didn't like our offer. Got out in front of a temple and wandered

around the market. This part was obviously aimed at locals, shops selling animal parts. Apparently it was really easy to get lost here, so we stuck to the main sections. The market area is quite old and beautiful buildings. We tried to catch a taxi out of there, but when we told them where we wanted to go they drove off- we were a bit puzzled. So we walked for a bit and tried again. One driver liked our price and off we went. There are a lot of near misses between cars and pedestrians.
Back at our hotel we went straight to the bar until we had to meet our group and guide. Our guide is Tarek and the groups seems okay. Am looking forward to travelling in a group.
