Peru I took and overnight flight to Lima followed by a flight to Arequipa and got there early in the morning. Arequipa The second largest city in Peru. High altitude, surrounded by volcanoes. The centre is very cool architecturally with cathedrals, monestaries, lots of Juliette balconies and courtyards. Lovely coffee shops, nice place to hang out for a day. The main reason why I wanted to do Arequipa was the Colca Canyon which is a very Deep canyon in the Andes. I did this with a 2 day trek tour with a very early pick up of 3am! We arrived at the Canyon after having breakfast in a town along the way and stopping to watch Condors. We then descended into the canyon and walked along the bottom for the day. We stopped for lunch and ... read more

It’s 3.30am on Sept 23, as we board the shuttle from the Airport Marriot in LA to begin our journey to Colombia. The final destination for the day is Medellin. I’m accompanied by my friend Richard (Dick) Avery who has made a couple of trips with me in the past. Normally, it’s my English friend, Malcolm from Fiji but he’s decided to retire from travelling. The journey is long, LA to Atlanta, Atlanta To Bogota and Bogota to Medellin (city of eternal spring) arriving in Medellin at 23.33 local time (2 hours in front of LA time) Then a taxi from the airport to La Campania hotel in El Poblado; a touristic district of town. Rather than try and work out Colombian Pesos at 12.30am we pay the grand total of US $30 for our 30 ... read more

South America » Ecuador » West » Puerto López September 24th 2023

It's been a relatively hectic two months, mostly because I've been teaching a lot. Two afternoons a week I teach English classes in my dining room (nine students in their 20's and 30's), Two more afternoons are the Spanish conversation class (a group of expats who have lived in Ecuador anywhere between one and twelve years, ages 32 - 75). Scroll to all the way to the end to see pics of these two groups of learners. I've been teaching more steadily during the past six months. Aside from some much-needed income, it also provides some rhythm to my otherwise leisurely existence. Although I prefer teaching in person, I still have two online students on Sunday mornings! I still schedule half- to full-day Scrabble dates with Shana two or three times a week. I enjoy preparing ... read more

Amigos, Salento Bus from Medellin to Salento- the fabulous coffee region. Salento is a small town located in Quindío. It’s colourful, cute, quiet and quaint. I arrived quite late to went to bed and got up early to do the Valley de Cocora. This is a valley full of wax palms (really tall palm trees), there is a walk which goes up the valley to a mirador and then down through the forest which is really nice. To get anywhere in Salento you need to get in the back of a jeep which are surprisingly comfortable but usually packed with people. After this I had a chill and explored the town. Salento also gives the opportunity to play Teho Next day I went on a coffee tour in El Ocaso which is an hour walk from ... read more

Buenos Dias Minca From Cartagena I got a bus to Santa Marta which got in at half 8 so I had a sorting out evening and morning in Santa Marta. Thankfully, it was a little cooler than Cartagena but there is not much to do and the city lacks much character. I got a bus or ‘collectivo’ in late morning from Santa Marta to Minca. I have been staying at a super cool hostel called Casa Loma which is on the hill. There are private 1 bed huts which were a bargain so booked one of those. Minca is a village in the Sierra Nevada mountains and a backpacking haven, nice coffee shops, food and hostels. Lots of good walking and nature to enjoy. In the afternoon I got there I went to the Marinka waterfalls ... read more

Have you ever fallen in love with a country so much that you wished you could live there forever? Believe me or not, that’s what I felt about Chile after an amazing 10 days journey in this beautiful country. We travelled from top to bottom in Chile, and I enjoyed every moment of it. I know this sounds a bit impractical, but I felt that I blended so well with the lifestyle as if I had been living there so many years. Despite my language barrier, I enjoyed company of the common people, places like Punta Arenas and San Pedro made me feel home, I could watch the beauty of Torres del Paine for eternity. Somehow, I found a mental bond with the country. Spending noontime in a food court in Santiago Mall or asking subway ... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama » Cerro Paranal September 4th 2023

It was cold at night. The typical desert weather – almost zero humidity, the days are hot, nights are cold; especially in the winter times. I made a mental note of turning on the propane tank heater at night when I would be back after the day trip. Yes, it would be a busy day; I knew that. During my planning stage, Daniela, the Manager from Ckoi Lodge made it a point we visit Piedras Rojas salt plain. It is located high above the sea level, over 4500m. Daniela chalked out the plan - on our way, we should visit the Laguna Miscanti and Minisque in the altiplano (high plain region of Andean region) of Atacama Desert. On our way back, we must stop in Laguna Chaxy. So, it was an all day busy, busy schedule ... read more

Have you ever pondered the issue surrounding the wonders of the world...? I have, and I usually always conclude that I wonder why there aren't more of them, at least in terms of how I value individual places of great beauty. Those issues aside though, among the officially-dubbed wonders of the modern world which I have set about ticking off a bucket list as I have journeyed my way through life, the latest to appear on the radar was Machu Picchu in Peru, and just about the first node on the Peruvian itinerary. Getting there was a case of ditching the rental car option at the last minute in favour of a rail journey to Machu Picchu Pueblo from the town of Ollantaytambo, which appeared to be the last stop-off point before road access to the ... read more

Hola chicas Cartagena Seems like 2 cities- the old town which is a fortressed l, walled part of the city and the very new skyscraper filled sky (Bocagrande). Is insanely humid- around 31 degrees but I was sweating buckets and it’s really difficult to stay outside for too long because of this. Arrived from long flight in the morning, dropped my stuff off at the hostel and then went to wonder round the old town and Bocagrande, went for a dip in the beach which was ok but nothing in comparison to the other beaches in the islands. After this I went back to the hostel to check in and went on a walking tour of Getsemaní, this was cute and had lots of culture and murals. Then went for arepas with some people in a ... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama » Cerro Paranal August 29th 2023

The driest desert at the highest altitude in Chile where some places have not seen rain in hundreds of years! Yes, that’s Atacama our next destination! Our flight from Punta Arenas to San Pedro, Atacama was scheduled to depart in the wee hours – close to 3 am. We didn’t have much choice. Punta Arenas is in the deep south of Chile – it is the gateway to Patagonia. And Atacama Desert is in the north of Chile. One needs to cross over 3000 km in the middle. One of my friends who has spent considerable time in Chile told me, “Are you crazy that you wanted to cover everything in Chile in one go – Patagonia to Atacama? Just in 10 days?” I just smiled...”Yup, ‘Crazy’ is my middle name”. So, there we were, sitting ... read more
