Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Should be in our previous entry, but no trip to BA is complete without photos of Boca, home to Diego Maradona´s team, Boca Jnrs.
Well we managed to sucessfully aquire tickets for us and our bikes for the very long bus ride to Bariloche. Although it was a bit confusing , checking in our bikes at a special location hours before our departure like we thought they asked and then having to get everything upstairs and check them on to the bus ourselves minutes before we left was all very confusing and exhausting. So obviously some of the finer details are still a mystery to us. The 22 hour ride wasn´t actually too bad, a bit like first class airplane seats and we actually managed [View Full Entry]

...and then I was off again to Uruguay - hadn´t intended to go but I´d heard there was a cool hostel in a fairly rustic town called Punto del Daiblo. With Gigi´s suggestion of sleeping tablets to make the journey go quicker I was off on an 11 hour trip. Now there was a little confusion owing to a lack of brain and preparation so I bought a ticket to Montevideo thinking one has to go there to get to Punto DD. As it turns out I´d missed a mail from the hostel giving a totally different route. So when I [View Full Entry]

...you will be eating bread, butter and jam every morning, instant coffee included. But come on....Nescafe...NO ES CAFE. ...you will be spending more than the alotted time in the bathroom because you're folding and hoarding wads of toliet paper. ...the words "WHERE AM I?" fall out of your mouth all too often. ...you'll go on "fluid restriction" hours before boarding a night bus in Bolivia because you know it will be 5 hours before the first potty break, which in reality means everyone milling about zombie-like at 1am in the street (aka a dusty path), looking for the bathroom (aka t [View Full Entry]

So I made it to Uruguay. Staying at Cecilia´s family´s house which is very nice. I´ll probably be lazy with any posts this week though. I will put more pictures up soon. Bought a maté today which we have to condition with old yerba so its usable. I also need to buy a bombilla to drink it with. Hope everyone´s thanksgiving was as awesome as mine. Had a wonderful asado (argentinian bbq) at ed´s which was delicious and fun. lots of wine and amazing stead instead of turkey and stuffing. Definitely a thanksgiving I won´t forget. And then the boat pulled into BA. Leonie was a star so there were no hiccups in getting the buses and boat to BA and as I hadn´t managed to organise myself a place to stay she got me into her hostel and I went about getting one for myself the next morning. BA was in the middle of unseasonably hot weather and my chosen hostel room is pretty much a Japanese sweat box. I haven´t slept under the covers once. Got myself into a spanish school so I started off with a couple of one to ones and will start [View Full Entry]

After an hour flight delay and a 2 hour flight, we arrived in Bariloche. We met Maxi, our car rental guy, at the airport. Maxi is one of the most laid back people I have ever met. After some trail and error with the stick shift VW, we set off for our cabin. Our first impressions of Bariloche were sort of unimpressed. We were very happy that we had a rented a place 20km south of the city. When we finally arrived at our cabin (www.barilochelakehouse.com), we were more than pleased. The living room has stunning views of the lake and [View Full Entry]

Saturday was a lazy day laying around the cabin. We got up late and just laid around all day, reading, listening to jazz, watching fox news, drinking local microbrews, eating smoked meats, etc. I built a nice fire and we just enjoyed a nice restful day with the beautiful view from our living room. For dinner, we went to Butterfly. Butterfly is an intimate little restaurant run by a German, an Irishman, and a beautiful Argentine. The meal consisted of a 7 (really 9) course tasting menu. This was probably the most extravagant meal we had ever eaten. The host, Sebi, [View Full Entry]

Bus to Quito

South America » Ecuador » North » Quito
I got to the Ormeno bus station around 4pm ready to depart at 5pm. In the bus station, I met a Newzealander turned Australian girl named Vanessa and a British guy named Jimi while waiting for the bus. It is always nice to have fellow English speakers on the bus and they were good people too. The bus was there and everyone was ready to go but for some reason we didn't get going till nearly 6, which was not a good sign. It is already supposed to be just under a 36 hour bus ride so I don't want to [View Full Entry]

Sunday we drove the Circuto Chico. It was awe inspiring. We took several photos of mountains and lakes. For lunch, we stopped by Gilbert's brewery. We had the trout and trout raviolli. We also got the chance to drink some tasty microbrews. After lunch, we drove to downtown Bariloche and ate some chocolate and did some shopping. After an afternoon of shopping and mountain gazing, we returned home for a few nice snacks. For dinner, we went to Albert de Boliche, a parrilla. We started with a chorizo sausage and a salad. For our main dish we had the bife de [View Full Entry]

We started the morning as usual with delicious locally made yogurt and berries. After getting a nice glimpse of the sunshine on the mountains from our cabin, we decided to go to Cerro Catedral, the big local ski resort. When we got there, we decided to grab some lunch at a parilla. We shared a patagonion lamb chop meal. It was very flavorful. At lunch, we learned that the cable car to the top of the mountain was not running. So, we decided to hike. We spent about 2 or 3 hours walking up the mountain. It was both breathtaking and [View Full Entry]
