Hola Everyone, I am off to Chile tomorrow. I am really excited to go to Chile and have a fabulous time, but I am also really sad to leave Lima. (side note- no blog yesterday because I was temporarily bed ridden after vomiting in the early morning and having to miss my placement. I also had to miss my goodbye dinner on the pacific ocean with all my friends. The good news is that I am feeling better today and that I was able to go to my placement. It only took 24 hours of sleep, 8 cups of coca tea,10 [View Full Entry]

Working on a Boat
Working on a Boat
Not everyone in Mancora is on vacation. It is a working fishing village too.
August 16 - 22, 2008 OK, where were we? Oh yeah, Puerto Eten and Reque. We made it back home to Pimentel and prepared for our next leg of the trip to Mancora (MAHN coh rah). This is how we got there: From Pimentel, we arranged to have a taxi pick us up at zero dark thirty (OK, it was 7:00am) and take us to the LINEA bus terminal in Chiclayo. We had purchased our tickets in advance which is almost ALWAYS the best way to go about traveling by bus. We were not willing to risk the trip to Chiclayo [View Full Entry]

It is Monday in august in Santiago. Friday was a holiday in honor of the Virgin. I would assume that would be the Immaculate Conception one, but I can’t claim to know the Catholic pantheon that makes a regular habit of mercifully intervening into the ‘work’ week. (Microsoft Word apparently is more religiously sensitive. The green line has appeared under ‘immaculate conception’ recommending that it be capitalized. In case you were wondering, Krishna and Buddha get auto-corrected with capital letters. An un-capitalized mohammed gets red lined. Here too appare [View Full Entry]

Day 54: Friday 22 August - Over the border into Northern Peru My 11pm bus from Loja reaches the border with Peru at around 3.15am. Everyone gets off the bus and waits patiently at the Ecuadorian side waiting for the border post to open. Word filters down the line that its not going to open until 4am.......great just what I need when I'm half asleep!! Luckily we don't have to wait that long and after around 30 minutes a light appears in the office and the border guard gradually starts processing the queue. After the formalities at the Ecuadorian side I [View Full Entry]

Camisaki (Hello in Aymara)! It’s been over a week since we last blogged because we have been so busy here! We just got back from “el campo” (the field) two days ago and we have a lot to say. We left off two days before we left for the remote Apolobamba region of La Paz, Bolivia in the Bautista Saavedra Province of La Paz (northeast of Lake Titicaca). Before leaving, Laura and I went to the MUSEF (Museo de Etno-Folkloria) to do some research on the Kallawayas and meet with Majo’s prior anthropology professor for some tips on what to do [View Full Entry]

Polly: Weīve been in Santiago since Sunday, and have generally been relaxing. Itīs a big city, but unlike Rio and Buenos Aires, everything shuts much earlier and is a lot more sleepy. Even KFC was shut at 10pm! Itīs a fairly clean city and because the weather has been sunny with a gentle breeze, it hasnīt been very polluted. What really makes it special though is the snow capped Andes which frame the city. On the other side itīs quite close to the coast, but we havenīt ventured that way yet. We spent the first night in Hotel Riviera with the [View Full Entry]

bellas artes was amazing...so beautiful. really loved the room with all of goya's drawings. loved the sculpted statuettes. didn't have enough time to see the whole museum, but loved the european exhibits also. much much better than malba, and gratis :) parque de la costa was really fun...argentine rollercoasters are a little scary. desafio =challenge . el infierno was ridiculous, la mina abandonada was even worse. there were a lot of other fun rides. tigre seems boring, small, and que fea otherwise...didn't really want to stay at night in the afueras. classes are good...lit and o [View Full Entry]
