Map of South America
South America is a continent situated in the western hemisphere and, mostly, the southern hemisphere, and bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean and on the north and east by the Atlantic Ocean.

As part of the Americas, South America is named after Amerigo Vespucci, who was the first European to suggest that the Americas were not the East Indies, but a New World unknown to Europeans.

South America offers a range of travel options - with stunning coastlines, vibrant cities, historic colonial towns, mountainous treks and the vast and bio-diverse Amazonian rainforest.

Pam still hasn't learned to pack light!
Pam still hasn't learned to pack light!
When the boxes finally arrived in Ecuador, a full day after Pam did, we had to load them up, store them, & later pack the truck again to drive it all up to the mountains.
OK, here we go on another adventure with the Engineers Without Borders Water Project! Pam, the founder & coordinator arrived in Quito with her usual whirlwind of "Pamdemonium" - but this time neither her luggage nor the 30+ boxes she'd brought along made it onto the same plane as she did. SO, I loaned them PJs and then Pam, 18 yr old volunteer Alex, & I had a day to kill in Quito. We enjoyed a trip up the mountains on the Teleferiqo skyway - breathtaking views of the whole city of Quito and the surrounding Andean peaks. We also had [View Full Entry]

Dancing In The Streets
Dancing In The Streets
First day in and already the locals are dancing it up for us.
So we flew from Rio to Buenos Aires and headed straight down to PLaza Doreago to be greated by a line of people dancing down the street to some amazing drumming, tango dancers swanning around the plaza, jazz musicians playing in the street, empanadas (south american pasty) the size of your head and freshly squeezed orange juice being sold at the side of the street..... doesn´t get much better than that for a welcoming commitee. We loved our time in Buenos Aires as it is an amazing city with a real European flare combined with a South American flavour, an amazing [View Full Entry]

Don´t Cry For Me Argentina
Everyone Is Dying To Get In
Huge Slabs Of Meat

I sadly left Ilha Grande and hiked down the beach in my barefeet and backpack. When I say hike it was only 10 mins but when you are carrying 20k on your back and walking on sand it is a good workout. I definitley won[t need to go to the gym while I am away (not that I am much good at that in Sydney). Imagine doing squats in the gym with 20k. If that was me I would give up after just a few but when you have a place to go and you have all of your worldly possessions [View Full Entry]

Cusco
Me and the very friendly riot police
What an amazing place Peru is. It really is full of surprises and Cusco is a delight though may be a little too touristy. It seems the military plays a pretty big part in the every day life of a Peruvian since you see some sort of police official everywhere. So much so that I thought it would be fun to get some shots with the authorities wherever I could. As you can see here the riot police were hilarious and very friendly. Cusco´s main square is the centre of town and a gorgeous place to people watch. The streets are [View Full Entry]

Great time
After Cotopaxi, the 6 of us went to a famous little town in Ecuador called Baños. This is Spanish for "Baths" and is so called because it has a number of public and private thermal baths. It is one of Ecuadors most popular tourist destinations for both Ecuadorians as well as genuine "out of towners" The night we arrived we went for an initial inspection of what the town had to offer and then we headed out for a cracking steak dinner. As with most decent restaurants that we have been to all over Central and South America, we were kept [View Full Entry]

My first look at the mighty Amazon as we flew in
There was no way I was going to come all the way to South America and not visit the magnificent Amazon Rainforest. It was a dream for me to be able to see this place and it was better than I had ever imagined. It was seriously like Jurassic Park - giant, ancient, magical, powerful, overwhelming and darn right dangerous. It was truly amazing and it was a huge reminder that we really were trespassing into another world - one we humans don´t belong. We flew into Peru´s Amazon Basin to a town called Puerto Maldonaldo where it was 35 degrees [View Full Entry]

I believe this is a V-shaped valley
Riobamba was the starting point for our descent south into Peru. The town is famous for the spectacular train ride to Sibambe, stopping in Alausi before making its way down to the world famous Nariz del Diablo or "Devil´s Nose" We didn´t do a whole lot in Riobamba except wait for a few hours for the train tickets to go on sale. We stayed here one night and set off early the following morning Neil and I rented some cushions and sat on the roof, which is the done thing for this trip. Vicki and Laura were cold and tired so [View Full Entry]

Riobamba
The love train
View from the train

Today I finally left that house of sin that was my hostel in Rio and headed to Ilha Grande, a tropical island, a hundred and something kms from Rio. I love it here. I realise that no matter how beautiful a city is - and Rio is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world - it will never make me feel the same sense of peace and happiness that I get in smaller places. Actually, the island is anything but small - Ilha Grande means big island - as it has over 80 beaches, but the actual town [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! Its been a little while since we´ve written anything, so this entry is going to cover most of our 4 weeks in Peru. We´ll try to keep it relatively brief, hitting the highlights from each spot, but there is a lot to talk about. We also attached a lot of pictures to this entry that range from the farm up until we arrived in Cuzco. After leaving Mancora, the Northern Beach hotspot in Peru, we headed towards Lima, stopping for a few days a piece in the major Northern towns of Chiclayo, Cajamarca and Trujillo. Chiclayo is a city [View Full Entry]
