Background: A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973. By yearend, the rebels had been crushed, but the military continued to expand its hold throughout the government. Civilian rule was not restored until 1985. Uruguay's political and labor conditions are among the freest on the continent.

After checking out Rosario Argentina for a few days we made our way by bus to Buenos Aries only to catch the ferry accross to Uruguay that same night. The ferry was this big speed boat with a cafeteria, gift shop and the WORST music videos Iīve ever seen, (and that means a lot cause I even like country music!) We arrived in Colonia and had a few fights with bank machines to get money, for some reason they didnīt want to give us any at 10 pm when we still needed to find and check into a hostel for the [View Full Entry]

Well bought a bus ticket to Montevideo as told to go no way near Punta del Este... While on the bus I thought, stuff it, Iīll give it a try. So on the Uruguan bus found it even better than Brazilian buses. Same great chairs but also waiter service. So he brought me dinner and a drink (only fizzy water, coke or wine so I had to have wine...). Then film in English, which most people complained about but turns out he couldnīt fix it, ha ha! Then he came and woke me at 7am the next day, gave me my [View Full Entry]

Well my million mile bus marathon (estimate of course) finally ended yesterday, and another one is about to begin. As you may have read already on Jordans blog we leave tonight on a 36 hour bus ride to the bottom of the world. Jacky will be pleased when I find penguins (at least hope to). I had a bit of a wild, yet disgusting ride into Argentina, leaving Porto Allegre on Monday night, crossing the border into Uruguay around 5am, spending about an hour in Punta del Este, continuing onto Montevideo, then taking a bus up to Colonia finally jumping on [View Full Entry]

Dear friends and family, Finally got back to a computer, irs been difficult with all this sunshine, beaches and surf. I left Buenos Aires a couple days ago and visited the quaint little town of Colomia with my new friend,Brock. Lot of oldbuildings, a lighthouse, fort, and a great beach. We had a great Parilla lunch there. Iīve been doing really well with the food so far but Iīll probably be a little thinner when I get back and a lot fitter for the sun run. Hope youīre pracricing Jason :) I travelledon to Momtevideo on Tuesday and walked the beach promanade [View Full Entry]

So we had a bit of spare time left when we were in Buenos Aires and people told us how easy it was to jump on the buquebus to Uruguay so we did a bit of research and decided Punta del Este was the place for us. Lots of rich Brasilian and Argentinian holidaymakers with their designer clothes and shades - we fit right in in our primark rags and backpacks!!! Well the Buquebus was booked up due to Mardi Gras so we ventured to the bus station with hope in our hearts and killer backpacks on and managed to get [View Full Entry]

Thatīs right, there was no tanning. Today we went sunburning (in the words of Kim). Even though, we used SPF 15 we look like tomatoes (this is Cari speaking, mind you. Cari is merely a light pink rose petal compared to the fire engine i am). We spent the day with Miriam in Punta del Este shopping and at the beach. It was pretty but there were too many people. Hopefully tomorrow we will find some secluded beaches up the coast-not that it matters because we donīt need anymore sun. [View Full Entry]

Iīm starting to get used to taking long distance buses. After listening to Spanish lessons for a few hours I get sufficiently bored to fall asleep. I arrived at Montevideo still thinking about my time in Brazil and the friends I made. But then I also felt good about moving on, as it was the beginning of something new. Although a bit exhausted, after checking into Red Hostel and buying a ticket to Punta del Este, I went for a walk through the east part of the city, and then the beaches in the south. Later, when I returned to the [View Full Entry]

A happy new year to one and all! We also hope that Santa brought you loads of cracking pressies. We've been told that in Holland they have a guy called Evil Pete who works alongside Santa. Everyone that is not on Santa's list gets a visit from Evil Pete and I don't think he makes do with just eating your mince pies and quaffing your scotch. We trust that none of you lovely people ended up cowering behind the sofa over Christmas while Evil Pete set about your house! We've been taking a well earned break from travelling. It's been amazing [View Full Entry]

Hmm, yes unfortunately I seem to have cursed the weather and am now grateful for a momentīs shelter in the internet cafe (where Iīm sitting in a fleece and soaked trousers from the torrential rains outside)! I do have an embarrassingly crispy red nose to prove that it has been hot though! Didnīt think Iīd be speaking French in South America but I have spent the last few hours listening to a Swiss right-wing ex-politicianīs tirade on Europe. Interesting. Although arenīt you meant to meet like-minded hippies whilst travelling?! Hee hee - takes all sorts, innit? When I arrived in Punta [View Full Entry]
