BethanyM - Bethany Meyer

Hello everyone-

I've done it! I've sold my house, quit my job and am making my plans...plans to travel and see the world!!!

Tango in Argentina
Lion Park in South Africa,
Beaches of Thailand
Undersea walk in Mauritius
Islands of Seychelles
Australia, Spain....the list goes on

Can you believe it?!?! It's something I've wanted to do for so long, and now I'm gonna do it! I'm still numb!

A little history...

Although this was something I've always wanted to do I continued to plug along in my life until one day when a wise young lady (my sister Becky) said to me that 'being happy is a choice and you need to choose it'. I was constantly feeling stuck in my life, as if I had no choices! Dreaming of doing things that I witnessed others doing, but never really doing any of them. Well no more!!! Thanks Becky, I'm choosing to be happy!!!!

Then one day I ran into a dear friend (my old boss Gary). He shared with me a very serious and life-threatening story where he was given a small chance of survival. After scaring the crap out of his wife and daughter, Gary survived. Despite this tragedy Gary was so happy and grateful in his life. That moment showed me how short life is and that if he could experience such a tragedy and be happy, I could certainly find my happiness. He inspired me to start living my life. Who'd a thought a trip to Target could be so inspiring! Thank-you Gary!

You might think those 2 small things were enough but trust me they weren't! I have talked my dear friend Robin V's ears off! Many of you have met or know of Robin, she has amazing patience. You can imagine how 'freakin' scared (and excited) I am and Robin continues to listen and be supportive knowing me better than anyone. I love you, Robin!

Now, you are probably wondering where I'm sleeping, wonder no more. I have put my stuff in a 10x12 storage unit and Gus and I are sleeping in a guest room at my friend Kim's. We couldn't be more grateful. Thank-you Kim!

Oh, and don't you worry about Gus, he is going to be well taken care of. He's so popular he's got a couple of choices. I'll be back before he knows it!

The Plan...

I'm off! This December! This trip will be a journey of discovery, not only the world and it's many cultures but a journey of self-discovery for me. I am looking for experiences that will shape the rest of my life.

I need your help! I am in the planning stage and would love to hear from you. Where have you been? Where have you thought of going? If you know anyone that has done something similar I would love to talk to them about their experience. A contact in a new land? Anything?

Your thoughts, comments and good wishes are welcomed. I will keep you posted on my travels...stay tuned!

ZAMBIA-VICTORIA FALLS (2)
One of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World
Off to Zambia - Vic Falls… A 3-day stop in Zambia to see Victoria Falls one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World. And that it was, beautiful, absolutely beautiful! I stayed at the Zambezi Sun that was right next to the park. The greatest reason for staying here is the wildlife that wanders the grounds and the fact that you can walk right into the park as often as you'd like. Right outside my window there were zebra and velvet monkeys EVERYWHERE. You wanted to reach out and touch them but of course you couldn’t. Also crossed over to [View Full Entry]

Wow, I don’t even know where to begin! Amazing! Amazing people, amazing animals, amazing cities, amazing history! Just amazing! Meet Ben Winegarden… I met Ben on www.couchsurfing.com. A site where travelers host other travelers to help them in a new city. For Ben this is an understatement, he went way above and beyond! He gave me a very nice place to stay, made time for dinner on the night of my arrival, dropped me off and picked me up the next day at the Apartheid Museum, helped me shop for a camera then returned that camera for me, dropped me off [View Full Entry]

On March 11, Argentina's President Cristina Fernandez raised taxes on export crops. A decision the farmer's, and what seemed to be all of Argentina, were not happy about. You could hear the car horns and banging pots ringing throughout Buenos Aires. A protest in Plaza de Mayo to support the 'campos' was an interesting reminder of the differences among countries. This was not put on any ballot to be voted on, it just 'was' but not without a fight...check out the pictures. A couple links to share the story. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601086&sid=aJDwruagFOjM&refer=latin_america http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23887571/ Next, an amazing trip to South Africa... A quick stop in Mendoza, Argentina...wine country. A fabulous little town with and amazing park - Parque San Martin. Went on a wine tour and olive farm tour but mainly just relaxed for 2 days. It was the weekend of Semana Santo (Easter weekend) so Chilean's and Argentine's flock to this beautiful location. Enjoy the photos. Back to Buenos Aires... [View Full Entry]

Off to Chile....

 South America » Chile
Puerto Varas, Chile... Probably one of my favorite places yet. It's likely because of where I stayed and the family that owned it but the town was beautiful too. I stayed at Hospedaje - Estrella de Belen run by Miguel, Sandra and cute little Belen. They helped me decide where to go, what to do and I got to practice my Spanish with Belen and she practiced her English. We were at about the same level so it was good. If you ever make it to Puerto Varas I highly recommend staying here. www.hospedaje-estrelladebelen.cl Also, did a day trip and walked [View Full Entry]

I decided once again to head out and made my way to Bariloche, an absolutely beautiful place in Southern Argentina. It was a 3 night/4 day trip and the weather was absolutely beautiful! A nice change from Uruguay. I was tired of just sight seeing, I wanted to actually do something so went on an all day horse ride through the mountains and forest. It was amazing! Up the side of mountain and trotting through fields so much fun. The scenery was incredible and I got some great pictures. However, you are gonna have to trust me on the beauty because [View Full Entry]

Uruguay… I made a quick stop in Colonia and Punta del Este, Uruguay but the weather was not cooperating! Colonia is a quaint little town. It was beautifully situated on the coast. After the agent called 7 places he found me a place to sleep at a little bed and breakfast type place called "Posada de Angel". There were angels everywhere; figurines, paintings, etc. I don't think this was a coincidence but that's just my opinion!!! Punta del Este is a beautiful vacation area, so I'm told. I didn't see any of it because it was cold and rainy but I [View Full Entry]

FREBRUARY 19, 2008 - My birthday, my 41st birthday, and I went to Iguazu Falls - Cataratas del Iguazu! A place I've wanted to see for 4 years and it was well worth the wait. What a way to spend my birthday. Note: For those of you reading this that had no idea of my age…SURPRISE! It surprises me everyday, why should I be alone! I plan to be this young at heart forever while being proud of being in my wonderful 40’s. I must admit I was getting a little pre-occupied with what I thought a 40 year old was [View Full Entry]

Well, I started to write this entry a while back but could not finish it. I felt that it was just a ‘bunch’ of things I was doing and not the experiences I was having. I was actually feeling bad that I had been here so long and still not speaking Castellano, haven’t been to any museums, the zoo, or the many other attractions of Buenos Aires. But tonight that all changed when I realized that for me the experiences of this journey are in the people that I meet and the time I share with them. These things will be [View Full Entry]

STILL IN BUENOS AIRES… Well another week has passed and I’m tired! Continue to enjoy BA, the people and culture. I’ve moved to a new apartment and it’s very nice. No more dirty bathroom! This apartment has a rooftop pool…so nice. January 30, 2008 - Went to Café Tortoni, the city’s oldest café (opened in 1858) for a Tango show. There were tango dancers, an opera singer and the ever famous Argentine gaucho. The gaucho’s were the best! January 31, 2008 - Helped celebrate Brigid’s 21st birthday in Palermo (a neighborhood in BA). Brigid is from Zimbabwe, Africa and traveling for [View Full Entry]
