Punta del Este Travel Blogs

Background: A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973. By yearend, the rebels had been crushed, but the military continued to expand its hold throughout the government. Civilian rule was not restored until 1985. Uruguay's political and labor conditions are among the freest on the continent.

I guess some of you may have been wondering where i've been the last few weeks and why my blogs suddenly stopped, well it was nothing to do with getting kidnapped, turns out Justin Timberlake felt threatened when he saw me and so bought my silence in a vain attempt to stop me from reaching my public.....good luck trying to silence me!! Getting serious for just a moment, as a lot of you are probably aware, I have actually been home for the last three weeks due to the death of my father. It's been a pretty tough time and I [View Full Entry]

The mysterious Nazca Lines strike again....

Well, I´m really only writing this because I haven´t done one for ages. It seems I´ve gotten pretty bad at this. Ah well. So, I finished my Spanish classes. I think I´m speaking reasonably well again now, so it acheived its purpose. I´m not sure I learnt much new, but I´m not sure I expected to. The school and classes were OK, especially for the absurdly low price, but not nearly as sociable as the school I went to last time. Not that it needs to be, I still managed to have myself an excellent bloody time. Anyway, now I'm in [View Full Entry]

In Punta del Este. An afternoon thunderstorm has dropped rain and the ubiquitous humidity onto this cluster of high rise hotels, condos and bling bling lining the sandy shores of Uruguay’s southeastern most point. I’m in an open air bar drinking piss beer and watching drips fall off of gaudy blue beach umbrellas onto vacant tables as people scuttle by on foot, bike, motorcycle. It will be hot and humid once again if the sun comes out, but for now this is heaven. The wind has shifted from the south in the last hour, which means we’ll be sailing tomorrow, [View Full Entry]

Through all my travels, I have never found a place I love quite as much as Punta del Este, Uruguay. A city by the sea, it boasts a combination of luxury and simplicity; of beautiful, exclusive resorts full of delightfully pleasant guests and employees alike. Perhaps it's that South American charm that gives Punta del Este its appeal... but that's not quite it either. Let me give you an idea of what the lifestyle is like down there, and maybe you'll get a glimpse of why the elite of South America has designated Punta del Este *THE PLACE TO BE* for [View Full Entry]

An extra day in Uruguay due to travel connections gave us time to get to the legendary Punta Del Este, playgound of rich porteños. Straight off the bus we dropped off bags at the first hostel we saw and were on the beach in half an hour... Obviously the wrong beach! It was beautiful though, and it was only in the afternoon that we stumbled across a busier beach. Punta is a peninsula with beaches all around - too many to choose from. On any of them a constant stream of thong clad ladies (of all sizes and ages...)stroll on past. [View Full Entry]

**please note we are having to post the blogs we wrote earlier now that we have a solid internet connection!** December 23, 2007 Random thoughts so far… -The trend so far in our experience (El Calafate, Argentina and Punta del Este, Uruguay) is that everyone eats dinner very late (we went to dinner at 9pm and no one was at the restaurant. By 10pm families with kids arrived as well as other tourists, etc. Dave and I have felt like “the early bird special” a couple of times, and we’re late eaters by comparison to most in ATL!! -The people in [View Full Entry]

Anyone else have a sudden craving for a painkiller??
We took a quick jaunt to Uruguay to see what some call the ¨Miami of South America¨. The south beaches that we saw are cool and breezy, the mall is the place to be, and the people are addicted to matte. There was actually nothing gay about it if you don´t count the guy crooning in fish-nets and heels on the streets of Montevideo, so we finally stopped the silliness and pronounced the country´s name correctly. We traveled in style on our usual double-decker bus so we had a great view of the houses from around the world on the way. [View Full Entry]
