Three guys, three countries, 27 days of South America - bring it on!

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 7th 2012

Hello from the airport lounge and farewell to Buenos Aires! Thanks to Qantas though we will be ticking one more country off the map - Niw Zulend bro via Christchurch. Thanks Qantas for giving no notice which tickled josh pink after his 5 day baggage absence. This wouldnt have happened to a Platinum member. Just saying. We spent our second last day in Recoleta, which they call little Paris and its a pretty swish cafe, arty sorta place with plush accomodations all around. Good cafe strips and food, where we also were able to purchase the local beer in two litre quantities, brought to the table in its very own capsule with individual cooling system. We were stopped in our tracks for a little bit. Recoleta seems to be most famous for its massive cemetery - ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires January 5th 2012

Hello from Buenos Aires! This is our third day here after getting off the ship and it is an awesome place. We have got into a fair bit of the city and have done the main shopping areas where mainly wine was purchased. There was an unfortunate situation where all three boys ordered a plate for three off the starter menu at one restuarant - expecting mains to follow - and we were stopped by the mammoth Pincada to share - have never been stopped by a starter before! One other lesson learnt in Buenos Aires - the illuminated block is not a block full of restuarants and bars that is well lit at night - it is in fact an educational square dedicated to the momory of jesus christ in his ënlightenment of the people. ... read more

South America » Uruguay » East » Punta del Este December 31st 2011

Hello from Punta del Este in Uruguay! Have just finished a day of beaches and walking around this resort town, although we were told we would see ferraris on the streets here the best we have seen is a porsch, and even that was a 4WD. This seems to be the richest place in Uruguay and very different from Montevideo. For lunch we went to the port here and ordered fresh seafood in the market and had it cooked up on the spot. Unfortunately did not do currency conversions well and failed to realise it was about $100 US for our lunch, not bad overall, but up there for south american prices. Also saw a sea lion fend off two street dogs and an intruiging battle - we were on the sea lions side. before montevideo ... read more

South America » Argentina » Chubut » Puerto Madryn December 27th 2011

Hello from Argentina! Finally off the boat after three days at Sea including Christmas and crossing Cape Horn. In Punta Arenas, I managed to go on a tour to Pinguiterria, a penguin colony in the coldest place on earth! Walked into a side street tour agent who had no tours for the day, but called an old boy who came in his own car and drove me the 70km to the colony, giving an overview of everything on the Island on the way. He also drove like a Chilean Colin McCrae which was pretty interesting when he made a full tour bus tilt wildy going past the edge of the road while he held the centre line. Good blood pumping stuff. Scott of the Antarctic has never been to Pinguiterria, otherwise he never would have continued ... read more

South America » Chile December 23rd 2011

Hello from Gateway to the antartic, Punta Arenas in Chile! It´s cold. Have just departed portside and looked starboard toward this city - pretty much a large sea village with gateways to penguin tours and ski fields. Think I may hit up a sneaky day tour somewhere with penguins being the back up plan if nothing else appeals. The last city was good, went on a solo trip to a port nearby and got into their coffees and looked through local markets. Bought some decent local products but had my local version of baileys confiscated upon return to the ship. Unlucky. It was called three milks, I was looking forward to it. Just got off two days on the boat after leaving the last port - we have been getting into some fine dining, lots of ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt December 20th 2011

Hello from our first port! We have arrived in Puerto Montt after our first two nights on the cruise. Was hoping to white water raft or get into some chilean horse riding but fairly solid weather is putting on hold for now. We had a good night out in Santiago before leaving for Valpo on the Saturday. It was about 6000 pesos for our 20 min taxi to the bus station and somehow then 3000 pesos each for our two hour coach ride to Valpo. Its a cool place with markets everywhere and lots of cafes and main squares with good culture. We left Valpo on Sunday after checking into our hostel that could not be reached by road, only several stairs. We had a good night in with the other hostel people, getting into a ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago December 16th 2011

Hello from Santiago! Have just arrived back from three days in Peru and it was the best ever! Turns out its about 2500km to Lima, Peru from Santiago and then another hour and a half flight from there to Cusco which is where we stayed before the Macchu Picchu trek. So that day was pretty much a travel day. Disaster One > Joshys bag was not transported to Cusco as advised by our airline. In fact young joshy went the entire time without his bag and today, day 5 of the trip it was waiting for him at our hostel. Funny stuff. He did the inca trail in sports shorts, foot locker shoes, reportedly little or no underwear and one t shirt and jumper. More entertaining, in Peru a XXXL is a size 36 pant. Joshy ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago December 13th 2011

5am Sitting in Santiago after first night´s sleep - we worked out we made about 33 hours straight before hitting the sack! Waiting for 9am departure to fly to Lima this morning and then on to Cusco, Peru arriving in the afternoon to set up for our Inca Trail hike. Chile requires you at the airport two hours before departure so we miss our breakfast at the hostel - outrageous! Arrival here was great for everyone except Josh - Qantas left his bag sitting in Sydney. Theres some talk it may arrive in Cusco Peru at the same time as us - but we will see. Funny stuff. Evvie and I got our bags and proceeded to make bag jokes for the rest of the night. Unfortunately fate struck me back - withdrew my first amount ... read more
