Background: A violent Marxist urban guerrilla movement, the Tupamaros, launched in the late 1960s, led Uruguay's president to agree to military control of his administration in 1973. By yearend, the rebels had been crushed, but the military continued to expand its hold throughout the government. Civilian rule was not restored until 1985. Uruguay's political and labor conditions are among the freest on the continent.

Punta del Este is the place where all the rich and famous of Argentina and Uruguay come to party, though only in January. The season was slowly starting in December, but it was still a fairly quiet, which was perfect for relaxing on the beach for a couple of days.. [View Full Entry]

Uruguay!

So, I skipped a couple of days due to travel / business / lack of internet. But, I’m back! And wow, am I impressed. This is my first time to Uruguay, and I am ready to move here for good. The people are incredibly friendly, the food is delicious, the weather is perfect and it is simply beautiful. Oh, and to top it all off??? It is SUPER cheap. But to back-track a little… on the 16th, instead of going from Campinas to Sao Paulo we ended up staying another night as James’ friend (horribly) got dengue and was admitted to [View Full Entry]

To the right of the bloke in the white t-shirt was the fellow who woke up with an interesting face
Looking around Punta del Este on my first day in town could almost warrant the adjective 'eerie', as it was absolutely dead! Apparently the permanent population of the town is about 9,000 but during the summer holidays it heaves with over half a million vacationers, many of them rich and famous I'm told. Clearly they had packed up and shipped out. At least 80% (no exaggeration) of the shops, bars and restaurants were closed, many so closed that they'd boarded or painted up their shopfronts until the next throng of tourists blows in around December. None of this bothered me [View Full Entry]

After all the partying and travelling in Buenos Aires and Iguazu, we decided to go to Uruguay to relax by the beach for a few days..I enjoyed the beach there but if you didn´t have much time in South America, it wouldn´t be top of my list of countries to visit.. We just visited Montevideo for the day before going back to Buenos Aires by bus followed by an hour long ferry trip. Despues de todas las fiestas en BA y viajando a Iguazu decidimos a ir a Uruguay para descansar un poquita en la playa. Disfrute tomando el sol en [View Full Entry]

The bus trip to the resort peninsula Punta del Este took about 1 1/2 hours and we ventured through 3 Uruguayan Departments (provinces, they have 19 in total). It is located in the Moldonano Department and was formerly a fishing village but is now an exclusive resort area. It is located about where the River Plate (which separates Buenos Aires from Uruguay) meets the Atlantic Ocean. Unfortunately Kali was feeling ill today and although she came with us she had to refrain from any of the activities of the day. The beach was beautiful, not too crowded but great sand [View Full Entry]

Typisch sind Reeddachhaeuser was mich unweigerlich [View Full Entry]

I have now arrived in the third country on my trip - Uruguay!I decided to head back down south to this tiny little country nestled between Argentina and Brazil, as it is renowned for having the best party scene in South America - they call it the St Tropez of the south!Having had a relaxing few weeks in Brazil, I am ready to party again! After a 23 hour bus trip from Curitiba (surprisingly comfortable and didnt actually seem too long!) I arrived in Punta in the small hours of Sat morning. After having been in Brazil, where everything is so [View Full Entry]
