My first passion in life is travel. I love the freedom of backpacking. Arriving in a foreign land and diving head first into the culture and a new environment is a fun, challenging and sponteneous experience. Will I ever be cured of the travel bug? I think not. Life truly is too short so you have to get out there and make the most of it!

Ok so Vegas sure is a long way from my last destination the Middle East, in every way. So it’s kind of a culture shock and what a fun one it has been! The jam packed week began in LA where my friend AL and I hit Beverley Hills, Rodeo Drive, Hollywood and Santa Monica. Hiring a hot grey coloured Spyder Eclipse convertible and driving along the beaches (Thelma & Louise style) to San Diego was a highlight. Much to our surprise, driving on the other side of the road was a breeze though we were amazed at LA's traffic gridlock. Even at 1am when we were heading back along a 6 lane highway to LA, we were at a standstill with traffic! Madness! After a frantic 3 days in California things were about to get ... read more

When political probems arise within a country the Australian Government is quick to warn travellers to avoid all protests and demonstratons - well this has been a bit difficult for us lately as we have had to walk through one everyday to get to Stew's appartment! Unfortunately, Stew lives opposite the Libyan Embassy here in Cairo so as you can imagine it sure is a hot spot right now. The crowds have been gradual but today is by far the biggest and as I sit on the couch typing I can hear chanting, clapping and screaming from the crowd. It's actually so large now that since I was home 2 hours ago the Military have called in back up and have now positioned two tanks on the corner of the street together with armed soldiers on ... read more

Cairo has just so much to offer. You would never be bored living here as there is always something to see and do. I can see how the constant bartering and terrible traffic would test your patience but overall, it's a pretty exciting and happening place. I have also been lucky to have Stew's mansion of an appartment to crash in and local knowledge coming from him and his embassy mates. As an expat living here it would be challenging at times but very very interesting especially over the next few months with elections scheduled for September. There's no doubt that this city would always keep you on your toes. Not to mention the perks for the diplomats!!!!! While in Cairo there's been a few funny and interesting experiences especially because of my blonde hair which ... read more

The past two days have been amazing! My brother Stew organised a luxurious boat trip on the Red Sea off Sharm el-Sheikh for 15 mates (mostly Aussies & Brits) and what a trip it was! I had heard that the snorkeling and marine life on the Red Sea reefs were top notch and so my expectations were high. Fortunately all expectations were exceeded as soon as we arrived at our 5 star three story boat. Once we set sail, the incredible landscape and blue blue waters were magical. We were situated just off the Sinai Peninsular between Saudi Arabia and Egypt in international waters and together with 9 staff we were treated like royalty for two days. Amazing meals were cooked for us, drinks were served to us and we had three massive balconies to sun ... read more

Strange. That's the best word I can think of to use when describing Tel Aviv and Israel. Our experience didn't start off well with our ordeal at the border crossing so our perception really needed to improve fast. Jerusalem was fine and perhaps that's because it was touristy but Tel Aviv has been a completely different world. The strangeness began in Jerusalem when we arrived at the Jerusalem train station to catch a train to Tel Aviv. When we arrived we thought we must have been at the wrong place because there was no one there. It was completely deserted. We were questioned and checked by security and we were the only ones there. It was a lovely new looking station with workers selling tickets and cleaners but no customers. Had we missed something??? It was ... read more

Jersusalem seems to have been one of those destinations on my list of 'must sees' during my lifetime probably because I had had all these stories etched into my brain from my Catholic upbringing. Therefore, it was a really amazing experience to actually be at the scene of so many different biblical events. It was also a relief to actually arrive in town as we had a very stressful and awful border crossing into Israel from Jordan. I had been warned that it was a tough border but I really didn't think it would be as bad as it was. We had come from Syria that morning so we knew they would have a few questions to ask us however, what we got was a full on interrogation. My travel companion Simon and I were both ... read more

Mmmmmm I wasn't too sure about Syria before I went. I mean, I had always wanted to explore the region but with all the current unrest all I could hear in my head was my father's stern voice saying ' you're not going to Syria Amy'. Opps - and wan't it named as part of the axil of evil??!?! Well now that I am out of the country safely I can now blog about it. Better knowing after the event hey dad??? :) Due to the current violence in Syria we did cut our stay short and only managed to visit Damascus which was definitely worth it. Just a short 2 hours from Beirut, Damascus is old school Persia. Carpets, spices, souqs and mosques ringing out over the city is a delight. Our stay was also ... read more

War still lingers in Lebanon

War isn't too far away here in Lebanon - you get a feeling that anger is just below the surface. This is pretty sad and worrying for most Lebanese since another conflict with Israel seems inevitable sometime in the future. The reason I say that is because of Hezbollah. We were actually lucky enough to spend a day in the beautiful Bekaa Valley which is predominantly Hezbollah territory. On our way there we encountered many road blocks and saw some of the targets that were bombed during the 2006 fighting. Our driver stopped for us to view an interesting war sculpture with war tanks and vehicles all cemented into a tall monument. This country is still very much divided and it was amazing to drive from the coast which is mostly Christian to just across the ... read more

Wow what can I say?!?!? Beirut is incredible! It's strange to believe it is part of the Middle East bcause it is so civilised. The fear and misconceptions many Australian's have of this city is totally incorrect. Ok yes it's got a terribly chequered past with civil war and currently with Hezbollah (both of which are still visible here) but it really has rebunded from it's war past and got itself together. No wonder they call it the Paris of the East - with all their cafes and amazing cars on the road, most Lebanese seem to live well out of their means. The money they show off is absurd. It's all about being seen at the right places, wearing the right thing and driving the right car. The streets are full of porches and ferarris ... read more

I suppose it's fitting to resurrect my travel blog from the Middle East since my last entry was from Jordan 2 years ago. Yep that's right I am back in the land of the Arabs for the next month and what an adventure it is going to be. Luckily for me my brother Stewart lives in Cairo and writes the Government travel advice so I am in good hands despite the current revolution unfolding within the region and our plan to visit Lebanon, Syria and Israel over the next few weeks. Things actually seem pretty calm in Egypt (which is the only country I have been too so far) especially over the last 48 hours as things have started to get back to nomal with kids returning to school and the cewfew being lifted. Tourists are ... read more
