Hola folks, Hope everyone is doing well, and had a happy New Years. All is well with me, and the rest of my soul-searching traveling companions. Its been a few days since my last update, so I'll try to recount to the best of my memory. We spent New Years in Buenos Aires which was hands down some of the most insane hours of the trip. We left our hostel around 11 in search of dinner, only to have walked into what seemed like an evening in Baghdad. Every street, every corner, every sidewalk, was filled with kids shooting fire works. Not the, "hey its New Years lets light some sparklers" variety. Im talking rockets, cherry bombs, M-80´s, all the good stuff. Ten year old kids shooting fireworks at each other. Three year olds lighting bottle ... read more

3rd January- 8th January PARTY PARTY PARTY! if you came to Punta del este, then you are either a rich spoilt argetinian/brazilian/uruguyan with too much money...or you are a backpacker in search for a PARTY!!! this place has parties going on 7 days a week. i thought the parties start late in BA, but this place no one shows up before 3am. so u can understand, i spent many of my days sleeping my hangovers away!! Stayed in a cool hostel called Hostel 1949. however, it was the most expensive hostel ive paid for in south america, and strangely also one of the worst!!! we had 9 people cramped into the space of what should fit no more than 6 people uncomfortably! Walking through the main district was like something u would see in Beverly Hills ... read more

we went on a little trip from b.a to uraguay for 5 days. Now the 3 hours boat trip for us skivvys that are tight and got the slow cargo boat turned into a 6 hour trip and whilst having a nap on the deck also meant getting freak sun burn on one side. Went straight to the capital montevideo for the 1st night so more traveling on a bus but got a really good steak there so everyone was happy. We met up with some of the irish lads from the millhouse hostal. We went to punta del esta and the main aim for going to uraguay was for the beaches its supposed to be like the south american ibiza...well the prices deffinatly were we went in peak season where everything had trippled in price. ... read more

To start let me just say Punta del este is one crazy place. Ok since my last entry i spent 2 days in a nice beach town called pidiapolis which was good to chill out and i basically spent most of my time on the beach and the last couple of days have been here in punta. The hostel here (mananitalis) has been packed and is 15 minute drive out of town which was good and bad. you really have to take a bus every where unless you are off to the beach where you can just walk...anyways i met more brazilians who have been driving around uruguay in a car so i stuck with them and headed out to a night club in the outskirts of la barra (the trendy place to go out drinking) ... read more

Then it was back down to the capital city Montevideo to stay with my brother were we took the oportunity to see most of the sites, restaurants, of course the NIGHT LIFE! With him and the extended family... Had the chance to stay for a few days with my lovely and funniest cousin MARIO and wife Fab who showed us a great hospitality. Jam packed 4 days with them, no stone was left unturned! Hopefully one day they'll visit us down under, you'll love them! We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to go to the Gold Coast of Uruguay 'Punta de Este' where the rich and famous of South America spend their summers! Top location, ocean views, huge apartment for us and my lovely parents! Beaching every day, black as in no time, just ... read more

Hallo!

Today a group of us took a bus trip from Montevideo to Punta del Este, which is a beautiful beach. It was very hot there, but pretty windy so after applying our suncream we had sand everywhere! There was just no getting rid of the stuff. There were some pretty big waves so I didn´t go too far into the sea, but thought I was drowning on my way out when I fell down a big hole in the sand! After a nice lunch we did as spot of shopping. The girls have all bought matching head scalves, so we look a bit like the pirates of punta del este now! We headed back to the over side of the beach and bathed in the River Rio del Plate, which was much calmer. Not so much ... read more

Well we are struck indoors today. There has been thunder and lightning and showers on and off all day. We managed to get a quick walk on the beach before it started to rain too much, but it was too cold to really enjoy anyways. But the lightning was pretty cool to watch, just not in the rain and the wind! There´s not much to do in this town. We managed to find a different restaurant open today. It´s so expensive here! We had the cheapest things on the menu (I had the two hamburgers and fries deal, Jacq had pizza) and it was still $15Can... Sad when last week we were both eating all you can eat steak for the same price. We went to the casino earlier and like everything else, it was deserted. ... read more

After waking up in the dark (the sun doesn´t rise here until about 8) we trudged down to the small Colonia bus station to catch our bus to Punta del Este. Not as nice as the Argentine busses but much cheaper and a short, 5 hour ride. Passed through the capital of Montevideo along the way. We´ve heard from various sources there isn´t much to do there so we decided to just pass on through and head straight for the beaches of Punta del Este. Our boat back to Buenos Aires leaves from Montevideo Friday morning at 1130 so we may end up back there for a walk around. The beach is beautiful here. Very Florida-ish. However one step into the water and I was instantly reminded of home. FREEZING. We can´t even go swimming, after ... read more

We have just spent 24 hours in the highrise rip off resort of Punta del Este. We finally decided after much deliberation to head to where the warmth is, across the boarder to Brazil. I think one too many evenings in hotels without heating has taken its toll!! At 11pm tonight we take a 10 hour overnight bus ride to Porto Alegre in Southern Brazil where the temperature will be 22C. Unfortunately check out time was 10.30am this morning so we have had the tough task of killing time taking long ambles down the beautiful beach and drinking coffee watching the world cup. Punta Del Este is the rich Uruguans beach resort so is expensive and filled with highrise apartments. It is also out of season so everything is shut and no one is here! But ... read more
