Lima Liked it, could have stayed longer but didn´t. Arequipa There is actually an old monastery here which used to have over 200 nuns inside, of all ages, and now houses about 30. But they never leave the walls of the monastry. Can you imagine that? Never seeing what the outside world is like - cafes, fashion, money etc. They go in or are born there and die there. And spend a life worshipping all day. That really is seclusion and manipulation. There are tours of the monastery (open to the public from 1970), but I only walked around the protective walls, I couldn´t trust myself to behave. Puno & Lago Titicaca. I´ll write more later, but for now enjoy the pics. ... read more

This guy was sent on a journey to find the navel of the earth. He found it nine thousand feet above sea level in the Andes. Cuzco is a great town. It was once the capital of the Incan empire, than a colonial outpost, and now its an international travel destination because of it´s proximity to Macchu Picchu. On Tuesday, I checked out of my hotel in Trujillo at 2pm. I spent the next eight hours wandering the streets of that colonial town. I tried this new game called: pretend you don´t speak English (or Spanish). These guys who seemed like they were trying to rob me, but were really trying to sell me soda, started asking me where I was from in Spanish, then English. I pretended like I barely understood what they were saying. ... read more

Well I now know why it is a bad idea to buy a sandwich from a street vendor in peru. It was very good but I paid for it for a few days and it took a dose of cipro to fix. This weekend was very cool. It was my last weekend with everyone from the spanish school so we all went rafting on the Urambama river. we had a two hour bus ride out to the river. we stopped a couple of times along the way in some very cool little towns. after we arrived at the river we had a saftey briefing then set off. I will say the river is no Kicking Horse but it was still alot of fun. we teamed up in groups of six. there was only 2 guys in ... read more

As fas as being on the tourist trail is concerned, Cuzco is right up there. The discovery of Machu Picchu some hundred years before turned what was once a relative backwater into something of a tourist hotspot. It was with some cynisism therefore that we travelled to Cuzco - but how could you possibly visit Peru without seeing Machu Picchu? For those that don't know what all the fuss is about, Machu Picchu is the most complete Inca city discovered, perched atop a mountain in the a most innaccessible region of Peru. The location itself is incredible enough, let alone the incredibly well preserved ruins that sit precariously in the clouds. Our arrival in Cuzco went according to plan, avoiding the many touts by virtue of a prior reservation secured (including a sizable discount - low ... read more

Hello everyone! So here were are, drawing close to a week and a half away from home, and having a brilliant time! We will start from the beginning…. Left Hastings last Monday, and made our way up to Heathrow airport. Had a fun night there trying to sleep, but being distracted by a woman trying to steal the trolley buggy! She told us “it’s just like driving a car innit”!! Finally we boarded the plane to Madrid, and the flight was uneventful. On arrival at Madrid, our names were read out by the air hostess. We found her, and she gave us our boarding passes for the Lima flight. We rushed to the next gate where we were greeted by a huge queue. However, when we eventually got to the front, the attendant told us our ... read more

You know that song by the Buena Vista Social Club: Chan Chan. Yeah, I like that song. You know that ancient city by the Chimu People: Chan Chan. Yeah, I like that ancient city. I went to the ruins fifteen minutes from Trujillo. They were pretty impressive, I mean no pyramids or anything, but big walls. At one time sixty thousand people lived here. I didn´t want to pay the six dollars for a tour guide, so I sort of lurked behind groups of English-speaking tourists. I heard that when the ruler of the city died, hundreds of teenage girls killed themselves as they brought his body throughout his region. Crazy. I ended up taking antibiotics for the mild case of dysentary I probably don´t have. I went to the farmacia, and asked for the pills... ... read more

Arequipa for us was something of an afterthought, as we already felt that we were behind schedule (if there ever was one!) and should be pushing further south. After hearing about the state of the road from Ica to Cusco though we decided that a stop in Arequipa wouldn't be such a bad thing after all. They call Arequipa "the White City" as it's largely made of a white volcanic stone that occurs locally, making the centre of the city absolutely stunning in bright sunlight. We walked around the city for the day that we were there, taking in the sights, and taking lots of photos. Since we were only there for the day, there were two things that we really wanted to see; the convent of Santa Catalina, and the Museo dela Universidad Catolica de ... read more

I was in Piura from Friday through Sunday. I hung out with Zandi and her Peace Corps friends. They had a barbecue, I ate cow heart, it wasn´t bad. That town was laid back. I didn´t do much... I watched a movie, ate some food, hung out... enjoyable. Last night I came to Trujillo... the biggest town in northern Peru. It seems like a good place, they´ve got ruins and shit. I´ve been feeling kind of sick... (rhymes with ¨craveller´s biahrea¨) so I´m taking it easy today... I just tried to upload my pictures... but the computer erased them all... it is pretty disappointing because I had a picture of some hardcore Lima graffiti, it repped ¨Harry Potter.¨ Oh the laughs we could have had. ... read more

I can't believe I spent over 2 months in Columbia, and every day was worth it but my initial flight date came and went on February 2nd. I was able to extend the flight to the maximum 180 days but I wish now I could stay longer, as there is so much to see and do, and at the rate that I move I know I will miss a lot of things that I want to see. Realising that I have just over 2 months left I made a tough decision and decided cut out Ecuador and booked a flight to Lima Peru on the 29th from Bogota. After one last memorable weekend with some friends in the small city of Yopal 6 hours outside of Bogota I headed back to the capital to catch ... read more
