Fik ogsaa lige ... read more

South America » Peru » Lambayeque » Chiclayo February 24th 2006

CuzcoBased myself in Cuzco. Enjoyed the Plaza de Armas and surrounding area in spite of us tourists. Toured the Inca remains in Cuzco and the sacred valley. But then... MACHU PICCHUNo photos, books, or documentaries prepare you for it - - sensational. Spent a day and a half up there, wandered all over the sight, walked back up the Inca Trail to Inti Punko, the last col on the treckers route in. Lake TitikakaToured the lake. Visited the floating islands, and hiked Taqila island. On the 8 hour return to Cuzco the road was blocked at 4000metres for an extra two hours by demonstrators. ... read more

Monday Feb 20 I don’t think I got the entire diary posted; I’ll try to put in the missing pieces tomorrow. The computer at the shelter is awful, all the keys stick, and it’s slow. Plus it’s a long walk, which I suppose it good for me…..but I do a LOT of walking!! Phew, I just answered the door, which is always a bad idea when you don’t speak the language!! It was a woman who wanted information about the English lessons here at the school. I tried to explain in Spanish that the director wasn’t here, and I didn’t know the price for the classes. It was really funny because she was under the impression if she spoke LOUDER I would understand better, and that’s not quite how it works! I know I was saying ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu February 21st 2006

It is completely spoiled by huge amount of tourists but it still is a magnificent structure in an overwhelming location. It is expensive on a South-American price scale and you quite don't feel you get your money's worth but you get to see the Machu Picchu you have seen in photos everywhere for your own eyes. That's what we felt about it. Aquas Caliantes is quite a shitty place that get's all the tourists without any effort. Not worth staying but we had to. The hostal was the worst with paint crumbling from the walls, snail community living in the bathroom ceiling and water floating on the bedroom floor. No need to fix these things since the tourists keep coming anyway. Ofcourse there are nice hotels as well, but the prices are on western level. Because ... read more

Sat Feb 19 I feel terrible that I haven’t done a very good job staying in touch with everybody. The internet guy WAS here and left a note, but of course no one was home, and then we stayed home till 6:30 last night, and he didn’t come. I did go down to the shelter this morning to use their computer, but the internet connection wasn’t working. It’s just awful because we really have no idea when he is coming. He just comes when he gets around to it. If you think waiting from 9-12 or 2-5 for the cable guy is bad…..and it bothers me the most because I think of you all the time and I can’t read my email from you. Tomorrow Thijs is buying a second computer for the school, and ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Taquile Island February 20th 2006

Well, Carnaval is spread over a couple of weeks throughout South America and with is comes water balloons, streamers, and silly foam (basically shaving foam in a pressurized can). It appears to be a game of flirtation between teenage boys and girls with the girls getting the brunt of the boys ´affection.´ The other targets are gringos (ie, us white folks). With Puno having had its Carnaval last weekend, folks were still in the party mood. We were prepared with our own silly foam and got to practice with it serveral times while in Puno! What Fun! Puno, like Copacabana, is situated along the shores of Lago Titicaca. As a town we don´t have much to say besides the above as we simply used it as a jumping off point to the Islands of Amantani and ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley February 20th 2006

The sacred valley, about 20km north of Cuzco, is a lush valley of Rio Urubamba surrounded by big green mountains. In the valley is the town of Pisac and on a hilltop next to the town are the ruins of an ancient Inca village. The ruins are overlooking the river valley offering splendid views. From Cuzco it's possible to take a train straight to Machu Picchu, but it would have been quite expensive (65USD) so we decided to take the local buses to Ollantaytambo and the cheaper train from there. From Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu the train is the only option, there is no road. Or actually you could also walk the Inca trail but that is even more expensive than the train (300USD). Pisac and Ollantaytambo are small towns in the Sacred Valley of Rio ... read more

Ofcourse everybody who comes to Peru must come to Cuzco. It is filled with tourists and all the stuff that comes with that: hotels, restaurants, tour agencies, etc. But it's no wonder that it's so popular destination since it's a really nice city. The inca heritage is visible everywhere. We went for a half day's walk on the ruins surrounding Cuzco. The ruins of Tambo Machay, Puca Pucara and Sacsayhuaman were impressive remains of the Inca empire. They really knew how to work the stone and were hard and precise builders. The rest of our time in Cuzco we spent enjoying the beautiful city and good food.... read more
