Day 58: Tuesday 26th August - Visiting one of the worst capital cities in the world I arrive in Lima early in the morning, must be before 7am. Never have I less looked forward to an arrival in a new place than this......everyone on my journey so far who has already been to Lima has warned me that as soon as I arrive I'll want to leave. Sadly in the time it takes to get a taxi from the bus station in the centre to the suburb I'm staying in, Miraflores - next to the coast they are proved absolutely right. I decide pretty much on the journey that I'm only going to stay a day. For a capital city there is not much to do or see and although you can paraglide off the cliffs ... read more

So we begin in Barranco, a suburb of Lima which is described as the bohemian artists quarter. I heard alot of negatives about Lima so my expectations were not too high. But we arrived to the very modern airport straight into the taxi our hostel (called One Hostel...it was really great) had sent for us. As I would soon discover, things work pretty well here. Granted we haven´t deviated from the well beaten path just yet, but the infrastructure in Lima is very well developed and there is clearly alot of money here...how well it is distrubited is yet to be seen. We slept like babies after our 24hours of travel door to door, and spent the next day exploring the city. I was surprised how few people were around...I guess I was thinking of the ... read more

Having read nothing positive about Lima, we'd been hoping to not have to set foot in it until LA Woman's flight home, but bus timetables and our next destination Huaraz forced us to drop by. And it really wasn't as dismal as the grapevine had suggested. Arriving on a cloudy, cool day, we opted to stay in the Miraflores district, a haven of shops and restaurants but little to see. We visited the Parque del Amor on the sea-front, containing many colourful mosaics with quotes and declarations of love, together with a sculpture of what appeared to be a pair of pensioners engaged in some slap and tickle. The dull sea and chilling breeze brought back fond memories of Saltburn. Nearby was Larco Mar, a large shopping mall with an array of fast food restaurants befitting ... read more

I landed in Lima what seems like weeks ago, but in fact has been a little under 48 hours. As they say, home is where the heart is, and right now my heart is completely immersed in this experience. So, what have I seen? What have I been doing? What has Miraflores offered me and what have I allowed it to show me? In this time I have bargained with money-changers on the street, I have toured a pyramid in the midst of the city, I have made friends with my dorm-mates, and sat for hours discussing life by the window in my hostel. I have watched Peruvian children play, I have eaten the local foods, discovered Skype, attempted broken spanish, nuzzled up in my sleeping bag, and walked to the ocean. I wish I could ... read more

Tour of Miraflores, San Isidro, Lima Centrale, Barranco After a late night to sleep and a very quick continental breakfast, I was on a morning city tour that the Mami Panchita Hostal arranged with onsite tourist agency named Raymi Travels. My simple and room 11 faces Federico Gallesi street, and the traffic began with raucous earnest at 6 a.m. Earplugs kept me at peace until 8 a.m., a time almost too late to make the tour, but the sleep needed. There was but one other tourist along, a stout gentleman in his middle 50s Jorge from, I think, Venezuala. Our driver Jorge and guide Jason picked me up at 8.30. Jason is a native of Callao, Lima´s seaport and airport district 20 minutes north and west of both Lima center and the San Miguel district, where ... read more

What a title! I think you´ll agree that this is going to be worth a read or a least a quick shufftie to find out who the hell has Potato Art at their wedding - nae Abstract Potato Art (a different class I think you´ll agree). Or perhaps you´re just wondering what on earth Potato Art could possibly be. Well read on ... and you won´t be disappointed (actually you might, there´s only so much we can do). This month of course featured a small diversion from the planned course of our trip. To be honest, every month has featured a small diversion to the course of our trip - we´re just flighty like that. But, for one of us this diversion was a touch more extreme. So that while one was plunging into the icy ... read more

Midwestern Gringo Arrives in Lima Arrived Hostal Mami Panchita, arriving shortly after midnight. Lima plane was 1.75 hours late leaving and had to fly around turbulence in Panama. Made the Chi -- Miami plan with just a few minutes to spare. There was some delay getting a man established in a seat on the plane headed for Chicago. The driver from Mami was there to pick me up after I exited through custom gate, a relief for one fresh to Lima and Peru. My limited Spanish will get a work out. There was a throng of people with names on placards waiting for their people. Once outside the airport grounds one knows they are in Lima--not Madrid for example. The shanty towns are just outside the airport near the Callou District. This hostal would be impossible ... read more

Hola Everyone, I am off to Chile tomorrow. I am really excited to go to Chile and have a fabulous time, but I am also really sad to leave Lima. (side note- no blog yesterday because I was temporarily bed ridden after vomiting in the early morning and having to miss my placement. I also had to miss my goodbye dinner on the pacific ocean with all my friends. The good news is that I am feeling better today and that I was able to go to my placement. It only took 24 hours of sleep, 8 cups of coca tea,10 gatorade juice boxes, and some donut holes (timbits) from my friends....oh and lots of gravol). Today at Mother Theresa's I had a really sweet goodbye. All the sisters and the laundry women showered me with ... read more

One last thing... I am REALLY REALLY REALLY far away from the jungle area where the government has declared an 'emergency state' because aboriginal groups are protesting. Aboriginal groups are simply blocking highways and oil and natural gas installations in protest of laws that facilitate the sale of their lands. Sounds reasonable to me. Seriously though, not to worry I am about a 4 hour flight with an additional 28 hours bus ride away. xo ... read more

Hi Everyone, It feels like it has been a while since Ive had the chance to sit down at the computer and reflect on my trip. I have also been seriously falling behind in my journal writting, so hopefully in the next couple of days Ill be able to catch up. Yesterday I went to my placement early in the morning as usual. So far every morning this week I havebeen working doing laundry at Mother Theresa's. We wash everything by hand and then rinse it in three different buckets of water. Then we ring it out and hang it out to dry. We wash everything with cold water because there is no running hot water. We were big approns and rubber boots and once in a while we have to stand in the basins and ... read more
