Turning down the Colombian and his repeated begging to stay in Cuenca, I was off to Guayaquil, Ecuador's largest city. My friend Andrea lives there and I was so happy to be seeing her, I was smiling and bouncing down the street when I finally heard her voice on the phone! It just happened to be the perfect time for both of us, and we had a lot of catching up to do. Andrea lives in the newly formed American-style suburbs of Guayas. The house she lives in is a long structure with 4 'apartments' belonging to her family and their help. So even though they are together in a sense, they all have their private space. Andrea's space is bare, hardly any furniture, white, with lots of windows overlooking the yard which runs the length ... read more

The dreaded Lima. Everyone I spoke to before I went to Peru warned me to spend as little time as possible there. And if I did have to spend a day, be careful and take taxis. I personally liked Lima. The seafood is epic. We found a beautiful and interesting museum, and I got to surf! The waves were crappy and I rented a really crappy board. But it was nice just to paddle out and catch a few crumblers. We went to the National Museum and saw a photo exhibit of the Sendero Luminoso terrorist war from 1980-2000. Fascinating, and sobering, in the way that a holocaust museum is.... read more

My final days in Lima were very enjoyable. I felt like I had learnt a decent amount of language considering the short amount of time, made new friends and had some fantastic experiences. Barranco On Saturday I went to visit an older area of town called Barranco. Funnily enough we spent a a fair while driving around Lima the night before trying to find a particular bar so I had already seen a bit of it by car. Whilst wandering around we met a very friendly builder restoring the back area of the main church, in order to build more tourist restaurants. I was fascinated at the social interaction between total strangers, which I learnt was quite normal. Auri, Luis and the builder spent fifteen minutes sharing stories about where they lived, what they do, and ... read more

Hi everyone! We´ve been here two days and it feels like home already. Before we left for the town yesterday we spent hours hiding money in socks and thinking of complicated defence ploys, but by the time we´d been side-tracked by our very talkative but gem-filled hostel owner, Angelo, we forgot to be nervous and felt totally Peruvian with our first step outdoors. It´s a cool springtime here which works well because the English summer hasn´t prepared us for marching in the sun. Angelo knows everything about everything and was telling us about the 5000 potato varieties (he reckons potato was genetically invented by the Peruvians) and the Potato Institute which is working to solve world hunger with potatoes. I mentioned that mum is a potato enthusiast herself and he immediately gave me two recipes, which ... read more

El bus It´s fair to say that I´ve been here a good five days or so now and should probably understand how the buses work, considering I catch them to school every day. But no, I still have no idea! Let me set the scene. Lima has a population of about 7 million people. The roads are pretty busy (not Delhi busy but getting there). The drivers are crazy. It´s chaos. Somehow it all seems to work okay. From what I can tell the public transport system consists of hundreds, maybe even thousands of small mini buses that carry people to and from work, home, etc. These buses vary in size and quality but mostly they are pretty shoddy, worn out rickety mini vans which can take maybe 10-15 people sitting down, and as many people ... read more

Hey everyone!! Finally got a move on and am now in Peru! My first impression of Peru, after arriving in Piura after crossing the border from Ecuador, was not good! Everyone was trying to rip us off ... taxi drivers, money exchange... everyone! There was rubbish everywhere, the food was horrible, the men were sleazy and the bus we had to wait 10 hours for to Lima was really expensive! :o( But apparanlty the driving and roads in Peru are even more dangerous than everywhere else so we decided its better to be safe than sorry and went with the more expensive, better company! We were on the top floor and had the panaroramic seats so by the time we got on the bus we were happy bunnies again! :o) Even more so, when for one ... read more

To all of you who have said I´ve been negative and not very witty on the Galapagos, well I´m saying it as I see it. It looks like I´m not that enthusiastic about wildlife, especially when it´s explained by someone (I´d describe it more bluntly, but my nephew and neice are also on the blog list) who thought he should be in the movies and answering questions was far beneath his status. Quito - Lima We´d booked a taxi for 5pm (3 hrs before departure) for the airport, it arrived a little late, but the traffic was such that we arrive at the airport (normally 20mins) 2hrs later, infact three of our Intrepid cruise friends: Lizzy, Christine & Narela, left an hour later and got there before us! Arrive in Lima around 11pm. We were picked ... read more

After much anticipation I´m finally in South America! I arrived in Lima, Perú a couple of days ago and I already having a fantastic time. This week is all about learning Spanish and the way of life over here. I booked a weeks worth of classes at the local language school and am staying with a Peruvian family to get an insight into life over here, to practice my Spanish, and help teach some English. First impressions of Peru I arrived late in the night, minus my bags, running very late, feeling somewhat anxious that the taxi transfer I had pre-booked was long gone. I decided to brave the masses of dodgy taxi touts waiting in the foyer and try to find my driver, Mr Garcia. Fortunately, after ten minutes of hunting I found that Mr ... read more
