I am quickly learning to adjust to not ingesting the water here in Peru. I am so paranoid about getting sick that I hold my breath every time the water even gets near my face. Better safe than sorry though. We ate a buffet breakfast at the hotel this morning and then met with Viviana (our travel agent) to collect our final itinerary and all of our documentation. Our trip has only begun, but so far Peru Tourism has been a wonderful company. I was so wary because there are SO many Peru tour companies on the internet and it´s hard to judge which is best to book through, but so far, so good (knock on wood)! Our hotel is two blocks away from one of the main streets, Avenue Larco, so we wandered down that ... read more

We left LAX at 9am this morning and spent the entire day flying, first to Houston and then onto Lima. We arrived in Lima at 10pm, a little earlier than scheduled. It´s hard to say what the airport itself is like as we hurried through to immigration and on to pick up our bags and it was really too late to see much of anything. Near the baggage claim area are people offering cell phones to rent for $10. I´m not sure exactly what they cost after that but it´s convenient that you can get one so easily. After gathering our luggage we were greeted by more than a hundred signs waving by different tour companies waiting to pick up their passengers. I´m not sure how our guy spotted us, but thank goodnes he did because ... read more

Originally we were planning on getting in and getting out of Lima, since thats what many people had told me to do- they had said that the city was dirty and dangerous. However, we ended up having one of the best weekends of our entire trip. After a long bus overnight bus ride, we got into Lima and checked into the Flying Dog hostel, which was right in the middle of the one of the nicest districts in Lima, called the Miraflores. We were very tired so we slept until the early afternoon and then went out to explore the city. First we made a Starbucks stop because it was the first one we had seen in South America and it was nice to have a little comfort from home. Then we walked along the coast ... read more

I landed in Lima late in the evening and was immediately surprised by how efficient everything seemed. I got off the plane and through customs in less than ten minutes, the bathrooms were cleaner than O´Hare´s, which really isn´t saying that much, and I got my baggage without waiting too long. I walked outside and there was the guy waiting with a sign to take me to my hostel. I was amazed. It didn´t feel like I was in a developing country. Then I had to get into the cab... The feelings rushed back to me. I had a smile ear to ear again. This is what I had been missing over the last month while suffering the horrible efficiency of being back home. The cab driver had to go to some random corner of the ... read more

Sah vermutlich sehr skurril aus, ... read more

With our time together sadly drawing to a close, we returned to Lima and found a hotel that was excellent on all counts, including serving breakfast in bed. Foodwise, we moved away from the realms of Peruvian cuisine for some novelty. A good dim sum stuffing is not something I'm ever likely to turn down, and it made me realise that my last one had been well over a year ago in Hong Kong. If someone had asked me before coming here which countries had had a large influence on Peru, I would have said Japan, mainly due to knowing of ex-President Fujimori's ancestry, however I've seen little evidence to support that. In fact the preponderance of Chinese food would suggest that the Middle Kingdom has been more influential. There has certainly been a marked absence ... read more

Well, everyone, our land trip is winding down. We are pretty pooped, and a mite tired of living out of a backpack (or duffle in Robin´s case). We just reached Lima this morning after 15 hours on a first class bus. The seats relcined, we had dinner and breakfast served, and it came with a pillow and blanket. We sat right up top in front in one of these panorama busses. I really liked that, except when we went through some heavy fog last night, tried to close my eyes, adjust the seat belt, and drift off into sleepytime. Didn´t quite work that way, but I did try. Watched movies in spanish, which slowly I´m beginning to understand more easily ( especially after about 8 weeks on the road now). So all in all, the bus ... read more

About a week before I arrived in Lima I began trying to change my flight home to the last week in August. Between the marathon training, very little money left and just a desire to return home I decided to change my original ticket which was for October. It was a little more difficult to change the ticket than I imagined because everything was booked up. I was left waiting until the agency found an opening for me. I flew to Lima from Cusco since the bus ride would have taken over 20 hours. I had arranged to stay with my aunt's family who live Lima. I spent two nights with them realizing that my Spanish still is not where I would like it to be. In my first half hour of meeting them I held ... read more
