Monday was back to the grind. We actually had to get up early again. Boarded our little bus and took off for our first hospital visit. Our time in Lima is spent touring local hospitals and seeing interesting cases. The health care system here is somewhat socialized. Basically, everyone has free health care, from the jungle people to the lawyers. However, you get what you pay for. If you don´t have any money to pay, you get the ministry hospitals (like free health clinics) with underpaid doctors, poor facilities, and very little treatments (for example, they might intubate your family member because they need it, but if you want something to treat their pneumonia they´ll write you a prescription and send you to the pharmacy to buy it). The next option is to get something like ... read more

Hola Everyone! I arrived safely to Lima on saturday after a pretty uneventful flight. I was actually pretty pleasantly surprised to find out that the flights that were not supposed to have any meals at all in fact had two meals. The theme of eating my way around south america has begun. Saturday night I was picked up by Jorge a super nice driver from CCS. He didn´t speak any english, and given the state of my spanish, we had an interesting ride. I managed to tell him I thought he was a good driver, which he thought was halarious (the driving in Peru is completely psycho). On sunday we spent the day touring around Lima a little bit. I went to the museum of the inquisition (spaniards are ass holes). We also went to Place ... read more

I woke up Sunday morning at 6:30am (a whopping 4 hours of sleep this time) and debated rolling out of bed or going back to sleep. Sunday was supposed to be a big white water rafting trip in a town about 3 hours away by bus. I had been debating it for the last few days. With 1 wk down without any breaks, and 2 weeks coming up with no breaks in sight, I was dying to just do nothing for a while. I kept debating all the way through getting up, taking a shower, and getting dressed. After wrestling for a while (it was supposed to be great weather out there, plus really fun, plus everyone was going, plus I could sleep on the bus), I finally decided not to go. Turns out there were ... read more

After roughly 2hrs of sleep, I dragged myself out of bed for one last shower in the Amazon. At around 5:07am I had a phone call that the bus was to leave at 5am, not the "5:15 or 5:30" that we were told the day before. So I scrambled around and grabbed all my stuff and bolted downstairs. I got there just in time to hear that it was too late and the bus was pulling away. It worked out ok though because someone else had overslept, so we just took a mototaxi to the airport (and probably had a nicer ride than the van). We met everyone there, and checked in for our early flight back to Lima. By the way, they only fly really early or really late from Iquitos. Supposedly it´s because of ... read more

We only had 24 hours or so in Lima after flying in from Cusco but it was enough time to meet up with Brin, Brock, Jamie and Mike, the Americans we met on the jeep tour. We did some shopping at Polvos Azules a massive market selling everything under the sun, we saw Batman - Caballero de la noche and ate pizza. We stayed in Miraflores which is apparently the nicest place in Lima, bearing that in mind I won't be rushing back to see the rest of the city. At Lima airport I thought I may have waved goodbye to my luggage when it was chucked on the conveyor belt at check in by an over zealous baggage handler before it had been tagged. I also picked up a bottle of Pisco only for it ... read more

Hello, We arrived safely in Peru after yet another hassle free border crossing. It´s so well organised here with people directing you where to go and the queues moving fast. We had an eventful first night. I woke up in the middle of the night to find Deaks scratching what looked like bites all over her body. Within an hour she was covered in them and itching like mad so she went down to reception and accused them of having bedbugs to which they replied "no way". She came back upstairs, in agony, refusing to get back in her bed so she went out in the hall and the next thing I know she´s pulling this huge sofa in the room so that she could sleep on it. Luckily I was fine and wondering why Deaks ... read more

Andi war natue ... read more

We stayed in an area called Barranco at the Barranco Backpackers Inn. Very nice place, clean, great help w getting back his bag. We met a few people from the US, Spain and Canada. Randomly we ran into a kid from Oregon at on of the church/museums and we ended up going Paragliding together. The weather wasnt the clearest but still it was great. ... read more

Well, yesterday was a fun day. I learned a new Spanish word, marcapaso, which means pacemaker. I just had one of those installed in my chest about one week prior to leaving the States. It started oozing a little and Rose freaked out. She made me call my cardiologist using our Skype connection via the laptop (www.skype.com). Long story short, cardiologist said, "Get thee to the nearest emergency room or clinic and get checked out." I walked to where I thought I had seen a clinic, asked a policeman where was a clinic (Look, I'm starting to think in Spanish.) and he gave me very precise directions to the Good Hope Clinic in Miraflores (http://www.goodhope.org.pe/) and I got an appointment for the same day at 2:20pm. Rose and I walked back to the clinic and checked ... read more
