The Bernard Brothers - Kyle and Darren Bernard

Kyle and Darren Bernard I quit my cushy job in health care software in January of 2008 and hit the road with my younger brother Darren (the one on the left of the photo). We had plane tickets to South East Asia and not much of a plan beyond that. It turned into one of the best years of my life. And, as a result of this blog, I convinced many of my friends to leave their uninspiring jobs and travel as well!

Currently I'm back in the Midwestern United States studying to be a physician. Money is tight, school has me bogged down, but I can't wait for the next time to get out on the road.

The hair has gotten long and I'm not doing a whole lot of shaving. As such, I get a frequent comparison to a certain religious figure.
I jumped back on a bus for Buenos Aires before heading over to Montevideo for my flight to give the wonderful, enormous capital another try. Of course, it didn't disappoint. The more time you spend in a city like this, the more you come to adore it. It definitely has some not so glamorous aspects, such as the noise and pollution that comes with any big city, but it more than makes up for it. This time I spent a few nights using up the rest of my Marriott points, a left over luxury from my time as a worker bee [View Full Entry]

I got into Mendoza in the early morning without a solid plan. I had been here earlier in my trip, but spent the time in a fancy, binge drinking, stupor on a Tour de Franzia. Instead, this time I wanted to head up to the small pueblo of Uspallata and enjoy the plethora of outdoor activities possible in the region. It is a few hours into the Andes where I would be able to go hiking immediately outside of town, without a guide, without needing to pay an entrence fee. However, there isnt an over abundant [View Full Entry]

Salta felt like the end of an era for many reasons. It wasnt on the original itinerary for any of us, it was going to be our last road trip (i.e. no more singing at the top of our lungs while bombing down highways in the middle of no where), and, most importantly, it was the end of our time as a group. Burton needed to split off from us early to get up into Bolivia and to make his move onward to Peru. Drew and Eric were going to cut up through Bolivia on a faster click to get to [View Full Entry]

Traveling around the world for the past year I´ve kind of gotten numb to many experiences; things that used to wow me no longer do only because I´ve been incredibly lucky to see so many magnificent sights. That is what happened in Rosario, a city with nice beaches, nice colonial buildings, nice night life, but nothing exceptional. However, at 10,000 feet, at the end of the most uncomfortable plane ride of my life, my heart was pounding. Finally the sky dive instructor latched on to Burton´s back said it was time to go. He popped open the cockpit door and it [View Full Entry]

I had been looking forward to seeing Iguazu Falls for several years and I can say is that they definitely lived up to the hype. They are absolutely gorgeous, and well worth the overnight bus rides to get to the remote location on the tri border area of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. The falls stretch out along 2.7 kilometers, 1.67 miles, and tumble an average of 64 meters (210 feet) down to the Rio Parana below. Garganta del Diablo, Devil´s Throat, is the largest of the falls and is 82 meters (270 feet) tall. It is a mind boggling display of [View Full Entry]

Shes kind of making an odd face in this photo, but somehow, I think I can forgive her.
We set out from our hostel at 7 a.m. from Punta del Este not entirely sure how we were going to make it over to Gualeguachu. Of course, nearly all the other passengers on the local bus are absolutely tanked, blown out of their skulls, finding their way back home just leaving the bars. Some were a bit ridiculous, one girl was complaining to the entire bus about the inefficient size of her male friend´s genitalial, with him right next to her. After everyone told her to shut up, she started complaining that all the other males on the bus were [View Full Entry]

Another one of those song quotes that you'll have to figure out for yourself... Punta del Este is the vacation spot for South America´s rich and famous. There are tons of beaches, but even more clubs and bars. The sand and the waves are nice, but the beautiful people sitting on those beaches are what makes them amazing (that and the dental floss the girls call bathing suits). We set up camp on Bikini Beach, cause with a name like that which other beach would four single guys go to, and simply enjoyed the day. The beach, oddly sponsored by Fox [View Full Entry]

Amazing moonlight at Santa Theresa. You could see everything.
I jumped ship from everyone else in La Paloma, and headed up to Punta del Diablo by myself, not really knowing what to expect. I showed up and had to spend the next few hours going from hotel to hotel looking for a room. Every single one was booked full for the next few days, if not weeks or month. Finally, after several hours of searching, I found one where someone had canceled so I was able to spend the night and take a look around the city. It is a ton of cabanas running along the rocky coastline, with many [View Full Entry]

I always have a hard time writing about weeks spent on beaches. You never really "do" anything, besides lounge around, have some drinks, and simply relax; I love it. As such, I´m hoping that some of the other twelve friends that were there with me could help out... New Years in La Paloma, Uruguay was the only date we had when we set out on our South American adventure. Everything was planned to be squeezed in before it, or left until after we had met this date. I ran out to the airport in Montevideo to pick up my friends Alyssa, [View Full Entry]

As I´ve been traveling there have been a few things that I didn´t expect to see that I´ve now been able to check off the imaginary list of things to do: dinosaur footprints, cave paintings, playing with dynamite... Now, I´m lucky enough to say that I can add "See a naked man do jumping-jacks." We set out for Colonia early in the morning the day after Christmas. We left Burton behind in Buenos Aires as he had pick up Anne from the airport and was going to show her around the town for a few days. We jumped on the ferry [View Full Entry]
