Kyle and Darren Bernard

The Bernard Brothers

I quit my cushy job in health care software in January of 2008 and hit the road with my younger brother Darren (the one on the left of the photo). We had plane tickets to South East Asia and not much of a plan beyond that. It turned into one of the best years of my life. And, as a result of this blog, I convinced many of my friends to leave their uninspiring jobs and travel as well!

Currently I'm back in the Midwestern United States studying to be a physician. Money is tight, school has me bogged down, but I can't wait for the next time to get out on the road.

After Darren and I met up with our brother Ryan, we had a quick overview with our guides at Kayak Adventures Worldwide in Seward, a solid dinner, and then an early wake up to meet our boat into the fjords. We had chosen to head all the way out to the Northwestern Fjord; it is an hour longer ride but has substantially fewer visitors (we only saw one other group of kayakers during the four day trip) and excellent wild life viewing. Along the three-hour trip we had amazing views of sea lions, sea otters, humpbacks (which we saw in abundance every day we were out there) and tons of other wild life. The two highlights on the way out were the pod of orcas we were able to follow for a while and hear via ... read more

So, immediately I need to preface the next two blogs with the fact that the photos don’t do the scenery justice. The Alaskan landscape is simply too mammoth, too epic, too grandiose to capture. Normally I say let the photos speak for themselves, as I’m not a talented writer and my limited vocabulary isn’t enough to describe the views; this time around you’ll simply have to go to Alaska. It is incredible, beyond what I thought it would be, and I’ve decided these two blogs don’t do it justice (and I’m starting med school so I’m short on time). That said… My brother Darren and I jumped a flight to Anchorage, then a 5 hour bus to Denali National Park, and finally a 5 hour bus into Wonder Lake campground at the heart of the park. ... read more

After a year of working and applying to med schools I was able to get back on the international trail again for a trip to Brazil. However, this was not just another backpacking adventure; my close friend TJ was getting married to his Brazilian fiancé (Bella) in his new home of Rio de Janerio. As expected, it was an epic adventure. We made our way to the requisite sights (and more so once my parents arrived part way into my trip), but we placed this at a lower priority. Enjoying the company of those in Brazil we just met, or we don’t get to see often, was of the utmost priority. We also made the most of having access to Brazilian culture from a local family’s point of view, which proved to be more fantastic than ... read more

The Ciudad Perdida trek takes you through five days of jungle hiking, up and down valleys in the highest coastal mountains in the world. The final location, the Lost City, was found by treasure hunters in the 1970s and, while not a massive archeological find, serves as a great place to end an amazing hike. I had heard about it a while back and had always wanted to do it so while we had other options on this short trip to Colombia, getting back to nature and checking out some jungle living was right up our alley. So we got picked up in what can only be described as the Colobian Army´s Ice Cream Truck. This massive, multicolored, Frankenstein, all terrain jeep probably ran on more oil than gas. We trudged along the roads for a ... read more

Between my post-bac program and returning to Madison to work at Epic while I apply to medical schools, I decided to take a quick trip to Colombia with my friends Ben (who I traveled with in India and Africa) and Max. I wanted to see what the country I've heard so much about had to offer and I have to say, it lived up to all the hype. Thinking of the violence of the 80s and 90s, many Americans still hold the perception that it is a dangerous country... However, most of the cartel violence has since moved to Mexico and most Colombians, knowing their country's reputation, are fantastically welcoming. Offering mountains, rolling hills, colonial cities, and Caribbean beaches, as well as ridiculously cheap flights from the U.S., I can't imagine the tourist industry blowing up ... read more

After the barage of traveling woes it was nice to set up shop in the luxary of Cancun for a few nights. However, while recharging the batteries with copious amounts of beers and chips and salsa has its upsides, it is difficult to not get a bit of the travel bug. I visited both Coba and Ek Balam a long ways back, but wanted to see what the progress was at both of the sights in the recent years. So, I built up the courage to put down the bloody marias and I convinced some of the fam to rent a car for the day to make the trip. First we headed out to Ek Balam. It is still in a state of disrepair... as the government comes up with the funds they remove a little ... read more

We woke up ready to leave the island and make our way into Mexico. I immediately noticed my carry on bag was not by the head of my bed, where I had left it the night before. As it contains my passport, wallet, camera, etc., I became nervous immediately. Scouring the room I found it by the door and thought it was odd it should have moved places while I slept. That’s when TJ noticed his carry on had moved during the night to a spot near the door as well. Of course, inspecting the contents immediately we noticed our cash was gone. Luckily none of the credit/debit cards or passports were missing. However, both of our cameras had been stolen (as well as all the pictures which were on them, hence no pictures on these ... read more

(So this blog was the first part, the good part, of the last few days. I left it in its original form just so you get the idea of how happy I was about life. The second part, the next blog, was possibly the worst 24 hours I’ve ever had in my travels. I went from extremely high on life, to being completely frustrated. I won’t give away the details, but notice that there are very few pictures? If you want to read the happy stuff, this is for you. If you would rather hear me rant on frustrations, check out the next one.) We got to Caye Caulker through what one would call “one of 'em good problems.” Sitting in Flores, Guatemala with the buses full in the direction we wanted to go, we had ... read more

Taking a break from the rigors of Organic Chem and the balmy, slightly sub-tropical, breezes of December in Chicago, I decided to check out some of Central America this winter break; that is before meeting up with my family in Cancun for the traditional Bernard Christmas of lights on a palm tree and chips and salsa happy hour feasts. Leaving on the 2:00 a.m. red eye I had no other option but to head to a holiday/post finals party before hand because half in the bag and late is the only way to go through security. I plowed my way onto the plane, flopped onto my seat and was out cold before take off. Switching planes in Guatemala City I was shuffled from my gate to the next and was off the ground in less than ... read more

I jumped back on a bus for Buenos Aires before heading over to Montevideo for my flight to give the wonderful, enormous capital another try. Of course, it didn't disappoint. The more time you spend in a city like this, the more you come to adore it. It definitely has some not so glamorous aspects, such as the noise and pollution that comes with any big city, but it more than makes up for it. This time I spent a few nights using up the rest of my Marriott points, a left over luxury from my time as a worker bee traveling from coast to coast in the IT industry, and got to know the more glamorous Retiro area. Otherwise, I just wasted a few more days away in the fashion of a weery traveler just ... read more
