Ok, so these are all pics of myself, which is a pretty vain thing to post. But F it, I like them. We rented a house in Pargos, which is the town nearest to Playa Negra. All the pictures were taken by two professional photographers - Alfonso and Bob - who hang out at Playa Negra taking and selling their pictures. So thanks to both of them.... read more

The dreaded Lima. Everyone I spoke to before I went to Peru warned me to spend as little time as possible there. And if I did have to spend a day, be careful and take taxis. I personally liked Lima. The seafood is epic. We found a beautiful and interesting museum, and I got to surf! The waves were crappy and I rented a really crappy board. But it was nice just to paddle out and catch a few crumblers. We went to the National Museum and saw a photo exhibit of the Sendero Luminoso terrorist war from 1980-2000. Fascinating, and sobering, in the way that a holocaust museum is.... read more

Mexico is for a Californian surfer what the Wild West of old must have been for cowboys. It is a frontier land ripe for exploring. It also serves as the natural habitat in which they feel the most at home. Everything just seems to make sense. The winds blow in cycles - calm in the morning and getting stronger through the day as the morning chill turns to the late afternoon repressive heat. The tides wax and wane like clockwork and the swells repeatedly crash on the shore in predictable sets. At least that is how I felt in my most recent trip to Mexico, and that was exactly what has repeatedly drawn me to Mexico. It is a homecoming as much as it is a vacation. In the sparsely populated areas of Central Pacific Mexico, ... read more

I was never supposed to go to Serbia. Of course it was on the list of things to do, with just about every other place on earth. But I had been bugging my Croatian friend to hook me up with a free place to stay with one of his friends in Zagreb. He emailed me one day and said his friend is going to Serbia and I should go with her. This was a Tuesday, I left on Thursday. But on Wednesday I met a random friend, Rob from Canada, who was just visiting Budapest and had no intention of going to Serbia. So of course he went too. Turns out my Croatian friend's friend, Sylvia, was going to a massive music festival featuring the Beastie Boys, Snoop Dogg, Basement Jaxx, Trentemoller, The Prodigy, and many ... read more

When you enter a new blog on this website, you can choose from a list of locations for the entry. It starts with a general region such as Europe. Then you pick a country, and after that a city, zone, etc...For this entry, I got as for as Ukraine. The nearest city in the drop down list was approximately 400 km away from where I was. This was about the millionth sign that I will probably never find Felsoszinever (pronounced Fell-show-see-never) on a map sold anywhere in the Western world. Nor will I ever probably find Uzhgorod or Mukachevo, other towns I visited close to the Hungarian border. Nonetheless I was there, and these pictures prove it. Most of you that are reading this probably received my long winded email on my trip to Ukraine, so ... read more

Szentendre (pronounced Sen-Ten-Drey) is a quaint little town 20 km from Budapest. The streets are all cobble stone and some of the buildings are 500 years old. Apparently it used to be something of an artist commune. Then the tourists started coming and the artists left, but all the art and art galleries are still there. There is also a famous wood worker that still lives there and many of the houses have custom hand carved doors. Well worth the visit.... read more
