arrived in arequipa three days ago and got in on a guided excursion up volcano el misti which is 5822 meters high. on the trip were two guys from britain, one form poland, me and the guide was local...he said he´d been up this volcano over 200 times. music was the backdrop for this trip because the guide had a portable radio which he kept on literally the enire time and the station played only U.S. music from the eighties. it actually became a nightmarish scenario and the trip participants argued about who could be last in the lineup so as to be as far from the music as possible. at one point, phil (british) asked angel (the guide) to turn on the radio for just five minutes and angel responded ¨no problem¨ then when six ... read more

Our time in Arequipa, Peru´s Second City, has come and gone; we haven´t left the city without rewards though. The city in the Southern Highlands of Peru. There is no real mountain chain to speak of in the area except for three volcanos which line the north end of the city (chachani, misti, and Pichu Pichu). Most people come to Arequipa to either climb one of the mountains (which range from 4800-5900 or something like that), or visit the nearby Colca Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world. Coincidentally the deepest canyon is only an hour or two further north from the Colca Canyon, yet tourists continue to strive for the second best - kind of odd if you ask me. We decided that neither of these things were on our agenda - mostly due ... read more

Well...I don´t write as eloquently as Jeff, however he is busy trying to find us a Peruvian Punk Rock Show.....so your stuck with me. Anyway, our travel plans are temporarily on hold as we are unable to leave Arequipa. I don´t even know where to start the last few days have been so action packed. Lets see I´ll try to start from the begining. We left our beautiful hotel in Haucachina surrounded by 200 ft high dunes Tuesday night....we took a 12 hour overnight bus to Arequipa. We decided on the $13 bus instead of the $26 bus....let me tell you it was miserable. I couldn´t sleep at all....the bus was complete dark, no aisle lights or anything and no toilet. It finally stopped once and me a another girl were directed to pee in a ... read more

We arrived in Arequipa a few days ago after a 30 min flight from Juliaca. It was love at first sight for both of us as we wandered through the white city late in the afternoon. Compared to Puno and Juliaca, Arequipa is beautiful! It´s a city of one million (same as Calgary) so it´s not too big or too small and there is a ton to do within and around the city. Our hotel is located in the Vallecito neighbourhood with a view of the Rio Chili right from our room. On Monday we had a chance to explore the city for a full day, making stops at the Santa Catalina Monestary... and throughout the centre and outskirts of the city. Arequipa is quite an active city, geologically that is! It is surrounded by two ... read more

Don't worry i'm alive and well and in an unknown suburb of Arequipa (just got on a bus which was supposed to be going to the centre of the city, but it didn't). In the last week I've: a) recovered from diarrhoea thanks to wonder drug Enterocolin, b) done the worlds most dangerous road via mountain bike and lived to tell the tale (crazy german guide couldn't shake me off!), c) been to Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca, d) been to floating islands and eaten very well in Puno, e) left travelling companion Lukas (he's now in Cusco doing a 7 day trek to Machu Picchu. I'm heading there tonight by super cama bus to do the standard 4 day Inca trail and by coincidence we'll be finishing on the same day. We never fell ... read more

Legend has it that the beautiful town of Arequipa, Peru recieved its name from an Inkan soldier who, being enraptured by the valley´s beauty while on march with his fellow troops, asked his commander, "Are quipay?" The translation being, "Can we stay here?" The city is famous for the white volcanic rock found in the valley called sillar. This material was used to build many of the colonial buildings and churches in the area and now is used on the facades of many of the city´s finer homes. For this reason, locals say that when the moon separated from the earth, it forgot to take Arequipa. There are three large volcanoes sitting just outside of Arequipa - to the north is Chachani at 19931 feet, the central volcano is the majestic and perfectly cone shaped ... read more

Upon our return to Arequipa we had a day to explore the city. We decided that our first stop had to be the frozen mummy museum, where the famous Juanita is kept (well she is on holidays at the moment). Walking through the streets in Arequipa is lovely with many colonnial buildings surrounding you and interesting often incongruent sights everywhere you look. Some of the things they choose to sell in shops together is interesting. We took a little while to find the museum in the morning because it is actually inside another building. They were very organised, we were to see a documentary then be guided around the museum. The documentary detailed the discovery of Juanita and the ritual that found her on top of a volcano as a child sacrifice. In actual fact there were ... read more

From Bolivia, it was time to head into Peru. We still had a while before we were due in Cusco for the Inca Trek, so headed to the west coast to visit Arequipa, meant to be one of Peru’s loveliest. After a killer 10 hour bus ride that wound through the mountains and seemed to stop at every single town along the way, we got there late at night, only to be abandoned by a cab driver who had no idea where our hotel was, so we spent about an hour roaming the streets in our backpacks searching for the place. Dubbed the ‘White City’ due to all the buildings made from light-coloured volcanic stone, there were some absolutely gorgeous colonial buildings and a huge, grand plaza, probably the nicest we’ve seen so far. We ... read more
