Nestled in a valley, encircled by snow covered Volcanoes, Arequipa is the second largest city in Peru and at a height of 2,300 metres (7,500 feet) it can quite literally take your breath away when you first arrive. An interesting combination of modern city, geared for tourism, and colonial charm, Arequipa is my favourite amongst Peru's cities so far. During our brief, but enjoyable stay, we visited the majority of Arequipa's attractions - the Plaza de Armas (a mainstay in Spanish colonial towns); Convent of Santa Catalina, the Cathedral and the highlight - the very well done Museo Santuarias de Andino where we got to view the mummified body of a young Incan girl, Juanita, that had been sacrificed to Volcan Ampato over 500 years ago to appease the gods. As we arrived in Arequipa around ... read more

I spotted a couple of Elves. This was my highlight. Many come here to trek Colca Canyon and spot Condor birds. But instead I went for a wonder by myself around Santa Catalina Monastery, as im that kind of girl. Founded in 1579, it's first residence were mainly the eldest female child of the family and normally came from wealthy or socially diverse families, they entered the convent to serve as cloistered nuns, never returning to their homes again. They lived in private cells but had servants and lead isolated, materially free, quiet lives with little or no objects to their name. Sister Ana de Los Angeles was the most famous nun who lived here and she died in 1686. Many miracles and predications were attributed to her name. She was beatified by Pope John Paul 2nd ... read more

A flight at 10:30 this morning from Lima to Areqeuipa gave us our first real taste of altitude (2,000m) as we disembarked. A warm sunny morning, we took in the sights of the terraced cultivation in the valley and the volcanoes surrounding the city before checking in at our hotel and having a light lunch nearby. Mauricio, our genial host, was at pains to tell us that he had worked for a British company, Rio Tinto, and that we could come back in the evening for a free pisco sour, listen to music and enjoy the food. It has the advantage of being close to the hotel...This afternoon, with our Arequipa guide Helmut, we walked around the square, visited the Monasteri de Santa Catalina (a "city" with a city) which has been open to the public ... read more

We arrived in Arequipa 29th Sept. Journey details: Origen/Destination... Arica (Chile) - Arequipa (Peru) Mode of transport... Taxi & Coach Company... Cruz del Sur Cost.... 3000 Pesos each + 35 Soles Duration... about 6 hours Remarks... we took a taxi from Arica across the border to Tacna and then picked up a coach for the rest of the journey to Arequipa. This was apparently the best way to do it. Our cab driver in Arica was friendly enough and seemed to know what he was doing... reassuring since we had to entrust our passports with him for a spell at the border. The crossing itself was easy, and passed without problems. After arriving in Arequipa we headed for our hostal: Arequipay Backpackers... the best hostal I've stayed in so far. Clean, central and run by Evelyn, ... read more

WATER RAFTING ON RIO CHILI (River Chili), Arequipa: White water rafting in Arequipa was a BLAST... The rapids we were on were level 3 and 4, not completely insane but enough to get your blood pumping. It was Tom, Sophie, Celia (two very fun English gals), Luuci (our guide) and me, and the five of us made a GREAT team. Team work in water rafting is the key and we had it down pat... well until we hit a sketchy rapid and Celia and I capsized, very funny but a lil scary! I thought the whole raft had tipped and was on top of me, tho luckily when I came up I could see blue sky, and three of our team still in the raft. Luuci reacher out his paddle for me to grab but I ... read more

We checked into The Point Hostel in Arequipa and set out to explore the town. It was night time and the city was alive. Taxi's beeping and whistling everywhere, buses flying around corners, policemen on the side walks greeting us as we past, friendly staff trying to promote their restaurants to us, and the main plaza, Plaza De Amas, was lit up like Time Square! Tom and I decided we liked this city already!! We stayed a few nights at a fun hostel, though it wasn't overly busy! A fave game to play at night time was Jenga (check it out crew I went to Thailand with... bit bigger than the one we played on that Island/boat trip eh?!). Met some really fun locals and fellow back packers there! We wandered around town and discovered little ... read more

Blog Machu Picchu DAY ONE: After a late night packing our duffle bag and buying last minute socks and ponchos etc we set off in a bus to Ollantaytambo where we all bought a walking stick and water. We then drove onto Km 82 which is the starting point for the Inca Trail. We carried only our day pack, snacks and water whilst the porters carried our duffle bags, tents, portable kitchen, food etc. They are amazing. We needed to go through a check point where our passports were checked and stamped. To start we crossed a suspension bridge which we called the Golden Gate of Machu Picchu. Tim was surprised how hot it was, as we were all set up for cold weather. Day one was a pleasant walk, starting at 2,600m finishing at ... read more

Hi All, We made to the beautiful city of Arequipa yesterday after an overnight bus. The weather is gorgeous...30 C. We are very lucky. The group we are travelling with is fun...Australia, New Zealand, Germany, England, Swedan countries represented in our group. We went to a nun conventry this morning and saw how they lived 500 years ago. There are still nuns there today, but only 24. Joel doesn´t think religion was very nice back then. Yesterday we saw a frozen Inca girl, Juanita. She was sacraficed at the top of a mountain 6200m high and that is the backdrop of Arequipa. The buildings there are all white from volcanic stone. It has a mediterranian feel to it. Peruvian wine isn´t very good but the avacados and olives are. We saw a palto (avacado) tree today. ... read more

... read more
