Arequipa Arequipa is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It felt even more beautiful to me because we had descended to 7500 feet from 12600+ feet and consequently, my breathlessness had lessened. Arequipa is situated in a broad valley, surrounded by three active volcanoes. You look anywhere towards horizon, you will see the brooding bulk of one of the volcanoes - El Misti, Chachani or Picchu Picchu. Picchu is ‘peak’ in Quechua language. Picchu Picchu means plural ‘peaks’. The reason is clear when you see the silhouette of the mountain against the sky. It has a sort of ‘saw tooth’ profile. The Ampato volcano, which is higher than the above three is not seen from Arequipa unless you are exceptionally lucky. Like every city in Peru, the city center boasts of a baroque ... read more

On Friday night, I left Lima at night and headed to "the white city" of Arequipa. Originally I had planned to travel through the highlands of Peru to get to Cuzco where I would take off on the Inca Trail for Machu Piccu, but the highways and bus times redirected my travels to a southern coast town of Arequipa, which earned it´s nickname from the many buildings constructed from a rare volcanic rock that is white. The bus ride from Lima took 16 hours... yup, that´s right, 16 hours. We decided to take 2nd class, which wasn´t bad until we realized that the air conditioning wasn´t working as we drove through the desert. I usually like it really hot, but even i was sweating up a storm. Yick! We played a weird version of bingo to ... read more

So after saying my sad goodbyes to Venezuela, it was back on the Gringo Trail to see and do as much as possible, for as little as possible, in as short of time as possible!! It´s pretty easy to do here as everything in Perú appears to be set up for day-trips, multi-day trips, overnight buses and conveniently spaced hostels! It´s a traveller´s paradise here and makes poor Venezuela look like an obstacle course just to get around. (dont get me wrong, I loved the challenge and often it wasn´t THAT hard... ít´s just not laid out on a platter like it is here!). I arrived in Lima late on the 27th of December - spent the first night in a great hostel, the TamboPacaya. The owner was so incredibly friendly and ended up acting as ... read more

Claire: We arrived in Arequipa, which is thankfully below 2500m, (above this height you can really start to feel the altitude) early in the morning. It's a beautiful city with lots to do and even its own indoor climbing wall! We stayed at the kinda famous Point Hostel which was great and organized a 3 day trek of the nearby Colca Canyon for us starting the next day. Colca Canyon is a weird place, a canyon twice the depth of the grand canyon that Peruvians claim to be the deepest canyon in the world. Problem is, they have a canyon deeper than it only a little further north and the deepest canyon in the world is actually in Nepal or somewhere similar. This doesn’t stop Peruvians being wildly proud of their big canyon though. Very strange ... read more

1 dia en Arequipa South America » Peru » Arequipa » Ciudad de Arequipa By NitramDecember 10th 2006I just spent 2 days in Peru where I got to see Arequipa, a nice Southern city full of old churches and covents. I arrived there after a night on the bus and only stayed for a day before hoping on another bus en route to Puno, on the Lake Titicaca. Pretty quick but I got to see the centre, visit the Santa Catalina Covent and rest at the huge Mercado Central.... read more

It's been quite some time since I've written a blog. This is wholly the result of my frugality: it costs far too much to download your photos to a CD here. I won't write how much, so that no one who thinks in USD thinks I'm crazy. So, from Nasca I took an overnight bus to Arequipa. This was my first overnight bus (which are a staple of South American travel, the distances are so vast and trains so non-existent), and all went well. There was one strange incident in which this guy announced that everyone had to get off the bus. When I got up, he said "No, no, not you." So myself and two other gringos sat alone in the dark, locked in the bus, for about 15 minutes. That was fun. Arequipa is ... read more

Spent a day in the White City of Arequipa, looking around churches and colonial houses. Also went to visit the ice-maiden Juanita, a young girl who was sacrificed to the mountain Gods at an elevation of over 6000m. She is one of the ten best-preserved mummies in the world - apparently she still has maiz from her last meal in her stomach. Took a taxi out of town to a posh restaurant with extensive gardens and lounging areas and was the only tourist there. Braved the Arequipan specialty of Chupe de Camarrones (shrimp soup), which was very tasty, if a little bit tricky to eat (where's dad when you need him?). Stayed at a cute little hostel for 10 soles a night (that's less than two pounds) for my own double room with dressing table, wardrobe ... read more

Hello! so i think that last time we wrote, we had just arrived back from the Inca Trail, which you will be plased to know that we have now fully recovered from! it was great to be back in Cusco and not feel ill! we met some really nice couples on the trail who were staying in our hostel (yes, south America seems like a realtionship test for most travellers!!) and so we had a really good night out with them, finished off with, yes, you guessed it, another menu del dia that was dirt cheap! In our last day in Cusco, we decided to head up to ´sexy woman´ruins with Stuart and Isobel, one of said nice couples! we were totally unprepared and half way up the heavens opened, doh! when we go to the ... read more
