A quiet rumble at first to capture the attention of a prowling fox, then a thunderous crack, and an endless shadow that sent the soaring birds into retreat, and finally the red glow of the rivers of fire running down the white mountains would tell the villagers that once again the god was angry. Having taken heed of the mountains cries the Incas would set out on a journey. A journey that began hundreds of kilometers away in the capital city of Cusco, and would bring the party to the crater summit of the majestic cone shaped volcano that they believed to be a god. The journey was not a simple trek, but rather a battle of endurance through extreme heat and cold, harsh wind and lashing sands, at dizzying altitudes. Once they got up there, ... read more

So my travels have regretably come to an end, it has gone so fast its unbelievable. I have spent the last one and a half days chilling out in a lovely colonial town called Arequipa which was a good choice as its a pretty town with lots to do. I would have love to have gone to the Colca Canyon and seen the condors but time will not permit. Instead I visited some local sights like the Monasterio Santa Catalina and did some last minute shopping with whats left of my soles. I have had such an amazing time in South America, seen so much, met some great people and just had so much fun I can´t complain but i start my marathon 2 day journey back to old blighty tomorrow morning at 5am. I fly ... read more

Forgot to mention that on our last day in Cusco, we went to see a footy game between the local team (3rd in league) and Lima (1st in league). It was really good fun, simply becasue there was so much action. 5 sending-offs, 6 goals and 2 massive stadium fights where riot police (and army?!?) got involved. There was a slightly worrying 'kerffufle' outside at the end where the police on horses got involved (which did scare me a bit), but apart from that, it was sooooo good. Much better than the game in Rio where nothing happened at all. Anyway, we had a seriously tedious journey to Arequipa on the bus. It was during the daytime (11 hrs) and was boiling hot (even for me!) and all the Peruvians on the bus were in fleeces ... read more

Hello, Just when you all thought I´de forgotten you I back with another thrilling entry!!! Well I made it to Cusco, I took an uneventful bus ride (over 30 hours) to Lima from there I cheated and flew to Cusco. I just could face another 30 hour bus journey. I spent a day and night in Lima looking for paddington bear...unfortunatly no bears to be found! But I did take an educational trip to the national museum and an equally educational trip to the local bar and club for you guessed it more salsa. I had a genius plan of going out all night before my 6 oclock flight to cusco instead of paying a whole 5 pounds for a night in a hostel (Im in real backpacker mode now). Not such a good idea when ... read more

´Fundada el 15 de agosto de 1540 por Manuel García de Carbajal.´ They are celebrating the anniversary of Arequipa today. ´La ciudad blanca´or the white city they call it. Why? I don´t know yet. Sitting at 2325 metres above see level the city is 466 years old today they say. People march with guns in the plaza de armas with the cathedral above and bands play. Rotary International, dancing, coca-cola float with a girl on the back of course. Gotta promote that coke! Botica cosmetics with girls wearing makeup. When and where did people start wearing makeup? The sun bright in the sky the parade started around noon and the sun has set and it hasn´t stoped yet. It continues outside as I type and it´s 6! Longest parade I´ve ever been to. I had to ... read more

This blog is for my two friends, Sarah and Eli who have just been engaged. To love, laughter and happily ever after. Cheers! TRAGICALLY HIP IN PERU THE REED ISLANDS of PUNO Puno is located near Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, home to the floating reed islands, and from where legend claims the founders of the Inca Empire emerged. Lake Titicaca covers 3,305 square miles of the southern highlands of Peru, on the border between Peru and Bolivia. It is the largest lake in South America. Bolivia and Peru have had arguments about whom it belongs to and have said we will get the “Titi” and you will get the “Caca” and finally they have agreed to split it somewhere in the middle, we will each get “Ti-Ca”, “Ti-Ca”, to make “Titicaca”. ... read more

Today, I am flying to Arequipa at 10:30am. Woke up at 7:00am and went out to buy bottled water. Only found a tiny, rundown and smelly store nearby. Bought a bottle of water and although tightly sealed cap means new bottle(Sometimes empty water bottles are refilled with tap water and resold, which will make you sick right away), the store was kinda fishy. Took a sip of it and waited for a 30m. felt ok. Drank all!! 7:40am. Went in a restaurant next to the hostel. Very hungry and didn’t have time to translate food names on the menu with dictionary and just ordered the restaurant’s signature breakfast, which seemed to have the most food out of all breakfast menu.(Yesterday, had snack for lunch, and a small airplane dinner in the evening) I realized that was ... read more
