Well, went to Chile on Monday to cross the frontier from Peru to renew my visa for another 90 days. I have to say, this experience was less exciting than crossing the border at Bolivia, but nonetheless, I had a good time. We left Arequipa at 7am and arrived in Tacna (a more southernly city in Peru) where we managed to get a taxi directly over the border to Arica, Chile within minutes. It costs buttons to do it like this and the taxi drivers are very helpful when you get to the border control cause the officials can be bitches sometimes! Anyway, cost about $5 each to make this trip (half that for pounds). Was crazy caus Wayra is Peruvian, they asked him loads of questions at the Chilean border and then only gave him ... read more

Arequipa is a beautiful city surrounded by mountains and volcanoes. From here we did white water rafting, trekked into and out of colca canyon, visited an ice mummy which was sacrificed on one of the volcanoes and visited a massive monastary.... read more

I did a search on google for volunteering with kids in Arequipa and I found a great organisation founded in the last year by an English girl, Jay and her Peruvian boyfriend, Luis. They set up the organisation getting volunteers to help out with children in a school, but now thats being fazed out and they work with children in an orphanage that Luis helped to setup a couple of years ago. They receive loads of volunteers from all over North America and Europe and its seem to be a really well organised group. They also recently started working in a small village (pueblo) on the outskirts of Arequipa. First they are working in a school but they recently bought land and are building a small building for their own use and more and more children ... read more

Well its been a very busy and exhausting time since I last wrote about the trip so I´ll do my best to fill you in on what´s been happening. We arrived in Arequipa on Saturday 17th, having travelled from Puerto Inca. Arequipa is a beautiful town built out of white volcanic rock (it is surrounded by at least three volcanoes) and considers itself to be very independent from Lima. The two principal highlights of Arequipa were Juanita, the Ice Princess (sounds vaguely like something channel five would show) and the Monasterio de Santa Catalina. Juanita was an Inca child (about 14) who was sacrificed on the summit of Ampato (6288m) 500 years ago and whose remains (including skin) and belongings were preserved in the snow. Its quite eery looking at her in the museum. The monestry ... read more

We´ve just arrived in Peru, well actually we´ve been in Peru a while but just got off the bus bout 7-8hrs ago. Our 2nd border crossing involved a night bus to Arica, taking a colectivo taxi and once we were over getting a bus to Arequipa. Except i was too wasted from the trip to bother spanishing a good deal and we got ripped off on the bus here. the bus was filled with locals and the aduana policia kept gettng on and having a check even though no more people had got on since their last check. but there was a dodgy guy next to us that seemed to be doing something illegal becos he gave a bribe to the drivers helper and kept passing off these childrens clothes to his mate when the checks ... read more

Arrived in Arequipa We arrived in the lovely White City of Arequipa, Ricardo´s home town. We checked into a great hotel and had a buffet breakfast where Rach got excited because they had a cereal that tasted like Sugar Puffs and cold leche! Ricardo gave us a quick tour of the city and then Margarita joined us to visit Santa Catalina. This convent is like a mini city in itself and previously housed 2000 nuns. We spent the afternoon wandering around the cloisters, chapels and rooms, which seemed relatively well furnished for nuns back in those days. It was really too big to appreciate as we were all feeling rather tired from the last two days and we we were wandering around at altitude again. Little did Rachel realise, the reason she was feeling so weak ... read more

Right, so on with the show..(having just spent an hour yesterday trying to update blog only to discover it didn´t save anything!) After several sad goodbyes in San Jose it was time for round 2, so off I flew to Quito, on the way getting some good time to practice my spanish with an Ecuadorian fighter pilot on the way. Quito is the second highest capital city in the world after La Paz, nestling away at 2,300m above sea level, and the altitude becomes apparent when even doing something so menial as climbing 3 flights of stairs! Managed to meet up with Matt without problem and took a highly interesting bus ride out to the Ecuator monument (Mitad del Mundo) for lots of entertaining perspective photos and some nice panoramas of the beautiful surrounding quarries (some ... read more

Tuesday 13th November So following the overnight bus from Nazca, arriving at 7am, we hopped into a taxi and were whisked away to our hostel. Prior to arrival we faced the usual patter from the taxi driver that our hostel was no good. This a common ploy of South Amercian taxi drivers as they usually earn commission if they take you to a hotel that they work for. We were having none of it. Having done our research, we were happy with our choice and decided to see what it was like. On hindsight, it was very good with all staff being very accomodating. It was very close to all major Arequipa attractions. For fellow travellers, the hostel we stayed at was the Los Torres de Ugarte. We were starving after our long bus trip so ... read more

Jamie: The overnight bus from Cusco to Arequipa was a bit of an ordeal with both the cold and the onset of illness conspiring to keep me awake most of the night. Jen didn´t sleep well either and by the time we got to Arequipa, we were knackered. Fortunately we were able to get straight into our room at the hostel and got into bed to catch up on sleep. I ended up spending most of the rest of the day in bed ill, while Jen got out for a bit of an explore. The next day I was feeling better and we were able to get out and explore the city a bit. Arequipa is known as the "White City" because some of the older buildings are made of Sillar, a locally quarried volcanic rock. ... read more
