I got into Phnom Pehn Sorya's bus station and shared a tuk-tuk with a Canadian guy who'd booked up at Hostel 88 just to the northwest of the Wat Phnom temple. It was another great hostel with another free pool table and outdoor pool, although this one was considerably warmer than the one in Siem Reap. It was 7USD a night. So far Cambodian hostels seem to be head and shoulders above those in other Southeast Asian countries. Phnom Pehn was hot... ball-sweatingly, T-shirt-disintegratingly hot and possibly the hottest place I've been to in my life so the aircon in the dorm and outdoor pool were lifesavers. Going outside at any point between 11am and 6pm was madness! I stayed for 6 nights which was longer than I wanted but I was forced to stick around ... read more

From the train station at Aranya Prathet a tuk-tuk (80 Baht) whisked me away to the border where I was dropped off at what I thought was a legit visa issuing office. This particular border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia is famous for its scams. With salaries being so low workers look for ways to supplement their earnings basically by ripping off tourists. When the tuk-tuk stopped and before I'd even put a foot on the floor there came a man to shepherd me and a handful of others into a nondescript office all the while saying "visa, this way". Alarm bells started to ring when I was quoted 1200 Baht ($40) for a visa. I'd read beforehand that it was $25. Maybe it was the fact that I'd just got off a 6-hour train journey ... read more

The border crossing was fine and I stayed in a hostel in Udon Thani just round the corner from the bus station meaning I could leave my room about 5 minutes before departure and stumble onto the bus without having to think too much. It was a VIP bus again only this was a proper VIP bus complete with toilet and breakfast, lunch and water included in the ticket. I arrived to Bangkok around 4 in the afternoon at the northern Mo Chit bus terminal from where I ignored the hoards of tuk-tuk / moto drivers vying for my attention and walked straight out of the station and over to the Chatuchak Park metro stop. It was a good-sized walk although I didn't help myself by getting a tad lost. I never would've tried it if ... read more

Luang Prabang The journey was fine although as with all night buses I barely slept and arrived to my destination like a zombie. The bus was half empty which helped a lot though. It was a full 12 hours before arriving to Luang Prabang with no movies to watch and no countryside to gaze at once it went dark. It was a "VIP" bus but I guess in Laos VIPs don't need to piss as there wasn't even a toilet. This means we were stopping regularly at the side of the road in addition to other random shacks along the way so that people could relieve themselves. Combined with the state of the bus and the state of the roads it meant the trip probably took about 4 hours longer than it needed to. This is, ... read more

"The Gibbon Experience" will fall into the category of things I’ll probably remember forever. I got into Huay Xai around 5pm exhausted and hungry after my trip up from Chiang Mai and I knew that The Gibbon Experience office closed at 7pm so I spent no time messing around looking for a guest house and just headed for the first one at the top of the list in the guide book - Friendship Guest House - 70,000KIP (7 Euros) for a private room and access to the great view of the Mekong River from its rooftop terrace. I pretty much just threw my things down on the floor and went straight to the Animo Office - the tour group that organises The Gibbon Experience. There are two tours available - Classic or Waterfall and they set ... read more

KO PHI PHI Oh dear! Ko Phi Phi what have you done?! This place should be paradise but instead it's a tourist-run, over-priced craphole! I spent two nights in Krabi town at Pak Up Hostel (I should've stayed longer - Krabi was a cool little town) and then on Friday 2nd I ferried over to Phi Phi Don Island where I stayed until Wednesday 7th. Even as I write that I'm still not sure how and why I stayed there that long! I arrived at the pier on Ton Sai Bay on the south side of Phi Phi Don and no sooner had I stepped off the ferry were they already asking for money - 20 Baht "island cleaning and maintenance" fee - a complete joke given that the island is full of empty beer cans ... read more

It was a short five minute walk from Butterworth train station to the ferry and a quick ride across to the island of Penang where I jumped off and made my way to "Love Lane" - the hub of budget backpacker accommodation in Georgetown. Lonely Planet advocates taking the bus but this is surely for the only truly lazy traveller... ten minutes walking and I was there and checking into Reggae Guest House which had been recommended to me by a fella in KL. It was a nice sociable place with free internet and breakfast and a pool table downstairs and I stayed there 5 nights. Georgetown was a very comfortable place to stay for a while. It was easily navigable on foot and it was hard not to find something to like. Above all, the ... read more

I arrived to Kuala Lumpur and hopped onto their super-efficient Aerocity Expres train linking KL International Airport with KL Sentral Station via a short bus trip over from the Low Cost Carrier Terminal. From KL Sentral I had to jump in a taxi to Chinatown. I had hoped to use KL's LRT Metro system but the last train runs at 11pm and I didn't make it on time. I headed to Suzie's Guest House right in the heart of Chinatown and a stone's throw from the Pasar Seni LRT station. I'd seen it on Hostelworld with a good rating although according to the website it was fully booked for the nights I wanted to stay but I took a chance and went there anyway since I'm always a little sceptical as to how up-to-date that information ... read more

Things did get better. Ubud turned out to be a great place to chill out for a while. I spent 4 days here leaving on the morning of the 14th for the Aussie-invaded beaches at Kuta and Legian. I really didn't do too much whilst in Ubud but to be fair doing nothing was what I had in mind right from the start following my escapades in Yogya and that bus journey over from Bromo. There was a real noticeable difference between this town and the rest of what I'd seen of Indonesia. Everything in Ubud is super polished and clearly geared towards better off tourists rather than poor struggling backpackers! Some restaurants were super high end and selling things that were pricey even by Western standards. I had to keep reminding myself I was in ... read more

It's fair to say that I won’t be trying that again! The day started pretty much as expected; I left the hostel at around 8am for my 9:30am return flight with Zest which was predictably delayed. But it didn’t matter. I had a load of time to kill until my next flight left at 5pm. Arriving once again to the domestic terminal at Manila I first had to get round to Terminal 3 using the free shuttle service. Then I waited and waited! Fortunately T3 is at least a slightly more entertaining Terminal with a decent selection of shops and restaurants to mosey around. The time slowly went by and I was finally able to check in for my AirPhil Express flight to Singapore. This is where it started to get a bit tight, I only ... read more
