YANGTZE RIVER CRUISE I went to Chongqing for one reason and one reason only - to do the 3-day slow boat trip down the Yangtze River to the city of Yichang, where the plan was to spend one night before continuing up to Xian. As usual from the airport I got to my hostel - The Yangtze River International Youth Hostel. I arrived at around two o'clock in the afternoon which gave me time to check out the various options for the tour and have a wee wonder around the city. I didn't want to waste any time. I'd only booked one night in the hostel but after umming and arring for too long I ended up spending an extra night. I didn't mind though, the hostel folk were real nice and the food in the ... read more

Well I suppose it was always inevitable that at least one of these blogs would come late although even by my standards this is taking the piss a little! I arrived into China on the 15th May 2012 and ended up staying almost an entire month, eventually leaving on June 12th to head back to sunny England. I'm writing this in March 2013 using the photos that I took to refresh my memory but as I sit here now writing this thinking back to that trip it's amazing just how long ago it feels! During my time in China I spent five days in Hong Kong, five in Shanghai, a few doing the Yangtze River tour on a slow boat, five or six days (I really can't remember!) in Xian and the rest of the time ... read more

The trip was fine in the end... it was a sleeper bus and I'd heard more than enough bad stories about sleeper buses so I think I was expecting the worst. In the event it was pretty cosy really and I had an almost fully reclining seat and just about enough space so that even a lanky bugger like me can relax. I still didn't sleep a wink though! Anyway, we got into Hanoi at around 10 in the morning on Tuesday and I checked into Friendly Backpackers' Hostel - 6USD a night getting me an A/C dorm and free breakie. My plan was to get the wheels turning on my Chinese visa as soon as possible since I wanted to go with the cheaper (and slower) processing option, so after unpacking a few things and ... read more

SAIGON It was a long journey across; I set off from Sihanouk Ville at around 07:30am and arrived to a hostel in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) at about 21:00. First was a 6-hour journey all the way back to Phnom Pehn (I didn't think I'd be seeing that city again), a half hour changeover and then 7 hours to Saigon including the border crossing. Needless to say I was fairly exhausted by the time I arrived and I just wanted to get a hostel ASAP. The bus conveniently stopped right on Phan Ngu Lao street which is smack bang in the middle of the backpacker district of the city. I went looking for "Yellow House" hostel from the guide book only to find that it no longer exists so instead settled on Saigon Backpackers Hostel ... read more

I got into Phnom Pehn Sorya's bus station and shared a tuk-tuk with a Canadian guy who'd booked up at Hostel 88 just to the northwest of the Wat Phnom temple. It was another great hostel with another free pool table and outdoor pool, although this one was considerably warmer than the one in Siem Reap. It was 7USD a night. So far Cambodian hostels seem to be head and shoulders above those in other Southeast Asian countries. Phnom Pehn was hot... ball-sweatingly, T-shirt-disintegratingly hot and possibly the hottest place I've been to in my life so the aircon in the dorm and outdoor pool were lifesavers. Going outside at any point between 11am and 6pm was madness! I stayed for 6 nights which was longer than I wanted but I was forced to stick around ... read more

From the train station at Aranya Prathet a tuk-tuk (80 Baht) whisked me away to the border where I was dropped off at what I thought was a legit visa issuing office. This particular border crossing between Thailand and Cambodia is famous for its scams. With salaries being so low workers look for ways to supplement their earnings basically by ripping off tourists. When the tuk-tuk stopped and before I'd even put a foot on the floor there came a man to shepherd me and a handful of others into a nondescript office all the while saying "visa, this way". Alarm bells started to ring when I was quoted 1200 Baht ($40) for a visa. I'd read beforehand that it was $25. Maybe it was the fact that I'd just got off a 6-hour train journey ... read more

The border crossing was fine and I stayed in a hostel in Udon Thani just round the corner from the bus station meaning I could leave my room about 5 minutes before departure and stumble onto the bus without having to think too much. It was a VIP bus again only this was a proper VIP bus complete with toilet and breakfast, lunch and water included in the ticket. I arrived to Bangkok around 4 in the afternoon at the northern Mo Chit bus terminal from where I ignored the hoards of tuk-tuk / moto drivers vying for my attention and walked straight out of the station and over to the Chatuchak Park metro stop. It was a good-sized walk although I didn't help myself by getting a tad lost. I never would've tried it if ... read more

Luang Prabang The journey was fine although as with all night buses I barely slept and arrived to my destination like a zombie. The bus was half empty which helped a lot though. It was a full 12 hours before arriving to Luang Prabang with no movies to watch and no countryside to gaze at once it went dark. It was a "VIP" bus but I guess in Laos VIPs don't need to piss as there wasn't even a toilet. This means we were stopping regularly at the side of the road in addition to other random shacks along the way so that people could relieve themselves. Combined with the state of the bus and the state of the roads it meant the trip probably took about 4 hours longer than it needed to. This is, ... read more

"The Gibbon Experience" will fall into the category of things I’ll probably remember forever. I got into Huay Xai around 5pm exhausted and hungry after my trip up from Chiang Mai and I knew that The Gibbon Experience office closed at 7pm so I spent no time messing around looking for a guest house and just headed for the first one at the top of the list in the guide book - Friendship Guest House - 70,000KIP (7 Euros) for a private room and access to the great view of the Mekong River from its rooftop terrace. I pretty much just threw my things down on the floor and went straight to the Animo Office - the tour group that organises The Gibbon Experience. There are two tours available - Classic or Waterfall and they set ... read more

KO PHI PHI Oh dear! Ko Phi Phi what have you done?! This place should be paradise but instead it's a tourist-run, over-priced craphole! I spent two nights in Krabi town at Pak Up Hostel (I should've stayed longer - Krabi was a cool little town) and then on Friday 2nd I ferried over to Phi Phi Don Island where I stayed until Wednesday 7th. Even as I write that I'm still not sure how and why I stayed there that long! I arrived at the pier on Ton Sai Bay on the south side of Phi Phi Don and no sooner had I stepped off the ferry were they already asking for money - 20 Baht "island cleaning and maintenance" fee - a complete joke given that the island is full of empty beer cans ... read more
