On Thursday morning we had pancakes for breakfast and met with Sarah at the Metro station to go to Mitad Del Mundo. When we walked into the park they didn´t charge us the $3 which was great. We walked around, ate lunch (where we met a girl who goes to Seattle University, small world!!!) and then left. We walked up the street to the REAL Mitad Del Mundo where we had a tour guide who explained to us all of the "phenomena" at the equator to which we were all very skeptical. It was great though. I celebrated my 22nd birthday in two hemispheres!! We did all the usual touristy stuff, balance the egg, watch the water drain, get sun-dial explanations. Of course, we got our picture taken, its very cute. Later we also did a ... read more

WEll it is the actual ecuator. lots of info about the place just not enough time if there is any info you want drop me a message. But we got to see water going down the plug hole in different directions north and south of the equator and not spinning at all on the equator quite surreal. We also balanced an egg on a nail and found out that walking ALONG THE EQUATOR WAS VERY DIFFICULT ALL TO DO WITH THE WAY GRAVITY IS ACTING. whoops caps lock error. Can you guess where the Mitad del Mundo is? Ok we headed south straight to quito where debbie and myself met up with a friend claire who works in an international school. We were lucky enough to have her spare room and the full use odçf cable tv washiong machine hot shower!!! Prior to our stay a class teacher form Y5 left unexpectedly so we said we would cover for a week as we had time. It was a great experience working with Ecuadorian children in their own country. Even though it was an english speaking school. Spanish is there first language. Debbie and I had a great time we turned the class around got display and groups sorted, which was made easier with 9 free periods each 40 mins and two teachers and a TA ... read more

Just coming to the end of three days in Quito - we are about to head off for the Amazon basin. Quito has been an interesting introduction to South America - an armed guard outside the hotel, people jumping on and off buses at street corners (they don´t stop just slow down), crowded markets, streetside foodstalls, colourful buildings made out of concrete which you are convinced have´t been finished. The people are very laid back and friendly although my communication with them is mostly through smiling, shrugs of the shoulders and pointing. You would never believe that I had a (part) language degree! Ín the past couple of days were seen most of the old town (which is a UNESCO heritage site), the statue of the Virgin on one of the hills (think Rio but smaller) ... read more

Travelling to Quito with an electrical student as a seat mate required only two hours. Being in the aisle seat, on a public bus that was totally full, I had no opportunity to take shots of the countryside. Driving into the city involved going thru numerous tunnels up steep streets and down steep inclines thru another tunnel. Overhead walkways, stairs going up between houses and the houses themselves seeming to be built atop one another gave a quick and permanent picture of the walking that would be required. At the Quito bus station we grabbed taxis and were on our way … until every vehicle seemed to be going in the same direction. It was election Sunday the taxi driver explained. In further conversation he told me that everyone over 18 was obliged to vote and ... read more

Today we went to the middle of the world - both of them. If you haven´t guessed yet, I mean the equator. Apparently, there is the official middle of the world, a tourist trap called Mitad del Mundo, with a giant monument and everything. And then, there is the supposed real middle of the world (according to GPS). There is a nice museum there with all kinds of effects, like the Coriolis effect, where water spins clockwise in the south hemisphere, and counterclockwise in the north hemisphere. I also got to blow a dart using a blowpipe, and I was the only one to hit the target. Then we went to a nice little volcanic crater, near Puluhalua, which was very beautiful. And the best thing is that we did it all by bus, and didn´t ... read more

Got up later today, and enjoyed our last opportunity for eggs and passion fruit juice, come highly recommended! Then we went to the bus station with our friends, to make our way to visit the Mitad del Mundo, 22km north of Quito via Ophelia. We were able to hop back and forth between hemispheres! Quite touristy, but interesting, as we were able to learn about the various tribal groups inhabiting Latin America in the past and present, & also about the various cultures and ancient traditions. Great views from the top of museum, with views of the prosperous middle of the earth town and its many new housing developments. As it was Sunday, there was a live band playing in the square, consisting of colourfully dressed dancers in traditional costumes, and playing instruments whilst folk dancing. ... read more
