Still scared to use the local buses around Quito we decided to take a taxi tour ($13) to the equator. Many people had told us the equator was a tourist trap but we were determined to get the line straddling picture! First stop on the tour was Pululahua Crater. After the taxi driver trying to talk to us in Spanish, we managed to figure out that he was saying “I’ll wait here, you walk up there and look.” The crater was a couple of houses in the valley between three mountains. It was very pretty but nothing real special. Second stop was the equator museum. Entry to the museum was $3, we didn’t know if this was a tour so we started walking around only to be shouted at 2 minutes later saying “Wait over here.” ... read more

Friday 16.7.2010 day 275 The Equator and Pulula Hua Volcano We got up at 8:00 and had bfast at the hostel then we walked down to the metro bus station and got the bus to Ofelia then we got on to a new bus to Mitad Del Mundo were the Equator line is. We had a bit of a look around the fake line then we took a tour to Pulula Hua Volcano which is active volcano but about 100 people live in the crater of it. There is even a small primary school with 12 students in the crater. There were lots of school students walking down and up to the town when we were there. It is about a 1.4 km walk but straight down. There is a road in but the locals do ... read more

Today we left early to account for a repeat of our problematic attempt to reach the equator a couple of weeks ago. This time we caught the right bus (their public transport is more confusing for a foreigner than the London Underground would be) and rode an hour and a half to La Mitad del Mundo (the middle of the world), a bizarre complex consisting of more restaurants and souvenir shops that anything else, but with a photo worthy monument and a few mind-boggling experiments. I weighed myself on the equator, where it is claimed you weigh 2% less (although the Lonely Planet says it is only 0.3% less than at the poles). Given I haven't weighed myself at home for a year or two (except for peeking apprehensively when the nurse weighs me!) I could ... read more

Thursday I woke up bright and early and met up with Ken in the breakfast room. As I mentioned before we were the only two people staying at the Hotel Cayman and it was a bit odd walking into a room capable of accommodating maybe 30 people for breakfast, to find only two place mats set out...clearly they were waiting for us :) Any way, I got speaking to Ken about my plans for the day and said that I fancied going up to the museum at Mitad del Mundo - the exact point of the equator. There is a monument some 300 meters up the road from the museum which, from what I can gather, is where they used to think that the equator lay. But GPS has since proved them wrong. Ken said that ... read more

13 Dec - Middle of the World!!!!!!! - Woke up again around 6am (nice - Alice snoring lol). We heard about this place that you go to which is about 1.5hrs by bus outside Quito which is where the exact equator is (monument and all). - Cost about $2 for the transport and we got there about 9.30am and looked around. Funny story the massive monument there actually was built in the wrong spot by about 100m hahaha very funny. Heaps of singing on the Sundays and loads of museum stuff about Equador etc - really interesting. - Went out of main monument area and walked up the road to a little Museum called Museo Solar Inti Nan which is all on the sun / equator stuff - absolutely must do, really interesting. You know how ... read more

Last night I went out to dinner with the Nishimuras and the Descours. We took two cabs to a restaurant our local guide (Edison) had recommended. It was a seafood place called Mare Nostrum. Dinner for the 5 of us, including wine and desserts was 111 dollars. The good thing in Ecuador is that they use the US dollar as their currency, so it's easy to pay for things. I had grilled salmon and it was really yummy. We again had to take 2 cabs back to the hotel, and Diane and Yoshi and I stayed in the hotel bar and had our "welcome" drink before heading off to our rooms. Don't scoff, but I actually had a daquiri. Hey, free booze, what can I say.... We left this morning at 9 am for our city ... read more

A must-see tourist destination in Ecuador is the Equator line, or as the Spanish know it "En La Mitad Del Mundo". Here you can stand on the equator, as well as do several experiments to prove it's location - fill a tub with water and watch the water drain without swirling, balance an egg on the head of a nail, and try and walk the exact equator line without being pulled to one side or another. ... read more

The Sunday we left mindo at 6 30 in the morning and arrived at mitad del mundo at about 8 am. After the lush cloud forest to be on an arid dusty plain in the hot hot sun wasn’t particularly pleasant! After some faffing with the guide book we decided to get a taxi to two lots of inca ruins and not go into the complex built around the fake mitad del mundo {where the French thought it was} So we first went to a pre incan platform built by the ancient peoples who had correctly calculated where the equator is. It lines up there with the top a volcano in the distance. We met some archaeologists who were measuring things in preparation for the equinox. It was an awe ispiring feeling to be stood on ... read more

By Thursday we decided it was time to venture out of Quito so Jules and I headed North to Mitad del Mundo, "Middle of the World". It is the equator line in ecuador which measures 00´00´00´. After two very sweaty bus rides we made to the weirdest "museum" in the middle of what looks like desert land.. Not quite the tourist attraction we were expecting! The place was an old quecha settlement and we were introduced to an array of freaky stuff found in the amazon, shrunken heads, poisonous spiders, fish who swim up genitals and boa constrictors to name a few! Feeling a tad nervous about my trip into the amazon next week now... When we got to where the equator line is marked on the ground our guide showed us some tests to prove ... read more
