I am in love with Antioquia. Ok, first I will begin with Friday. Friday was mine and Sascha's first day teaching by ourselves. We taught the older kids in the morning, organized and planned our behinds off, and then we each had really long one on one lessons in the afternoon. I worked with Luisa, who is a wonderfully kind and cooperative 13 year-old with striking green eyes that you cannot help but get drawn into. During this lesson, I would say that Luisa taught me as much Spanish as I taught her English, and we developed a trust and a relationship through laughing and being patient with each other. After our day was over, I hung out at the foundation for about an hour. During that hour, Leidy, a 7 year-old, came over and sat ... read more

San Agustin A small town way out in the middle of nowhere. We are here to check out some ancient burial grounds. San Agustin attracted a mysterious group of people who came here to bury their dead (3300 BC). They left behind hundreds of freestanding monumental statues carved in stone next to the tombs of tribal elders. It is a very beautiful area rolling hills, rivers and gorges. The first day we rented horses to go check out some of the tombs through out the country side. The second day we got a Jeep and a guide to take us out to some of the farther sites. We had another great hostel here to El Maco (www.elmaco.ch) very rustic and friendly. We are doing great, having a lot of fun. We are going to start making ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena July 5th 2008

When we arrived in Cartagena late one afternoon, it was raining and a big thunder and lightning storm was getting under way. Not the most auspicious start! However, over the next few days we realised that this is just the pattern of weather in this part of the Caribbean - hot and sunny in the mornings and during lunchtime, then at some point in the afternoon the sky clouds over and the rain comes in at high speed. Give it an hour or two and it all calms down again... So we learned to structure our days around the weather. With the high temperatures in the morning and rain in the afternoon, the majority of our time in Cartagena was spent taking things easy. We were feeling a bit lazy and so when the sun was ... read more

South America » Colombia July 4th 2008

Conquering our fears Back in September 2007, when we started our travels in South America, the one country we were sure we would avoid was Colombia. However, as we travelled through South America we met more and more people who raved about Colombia and who convinced us to at least consider a visit. Colombia still has a reputation as an unsafe country, stemming from the 40 year civil war between rebel groups such as FARC or ELN and various governments. But things seem to be changing now, the security situation is vastly improving, and what was once a truly unsafe country for foreign travellers, and hence not on the itineraries of most backpackers, is nowadays just waiting to be rediscovered. Crossing the border from Ecuador, I felt the apprehension you always feel in a new country, ... read more

Into the JungleBas talked me into taking my first trek. Well actually, I talked myself into it, but I wanted someone to blame in case I didn´t like it, so I told him it was his fault. We were joined by a reticent Englishman named Jack and a cheeky Belgian polyglot who mastered 7 languages seemingly simply to commandeer conversations in as many tongues as possible.By the end of the trip I was simultaneously wishing she would either shut up or get eaten by a jaguar. I didn´t really care which. The trip started out very easy, with a splash in a river swimming hole and a nice lunch. After that it was a FIFTEEN MILE HIKE straight up into the SUN (truestorysweartogod).Ok.Maybe it wasn´t THAT bad, but it was a rather steep climb with no shade. Add ... read more

Yesterday, one volunteer and I, Jennifer, spent the first half the day with two girls, Marcela and Leidy. They are two of the three girls I mentioned in an earlier blog whose mother was selling gum by the park the other day. They are absolutely adorable and we had a great time teaching them and playing with them. Not know Spanish very well isn't too bad because the children are the most patient and will probably teach me the most. I am teaching them English anyway, so it works out rather nicely. Except when I say yes to something without fully understanding it. For instance, today a girl, Manuela, asked me if I was blind. I thought she asked me if I was going to play with them. Of course I said yes, and later learned ... read more

Hello Everyone I'm in the heart of Columbia now. Visiting the capital city Bogotá. With me now is Meagan. She flew in on Tuesday and will be traveling with me for the next 6 weeks. I'm hoping after 6 weeks of traveling with me she will still like me !?! Only time will tell! We spent the last couple of days Checking out Bogotá. Lots of museums here, some amazing lookout points and some strange things too (salt cathedral). Salt Cathedral - this is a cathedral in a old salt mine under a mountain. the mine is full of caverns that are 18m wide, 75m long, and 18m high. The cathedral can accommodate 8400 people. Its a maze of caverns and tunnels also includes a 3D movie theater. We had a great time in Bogota and ... read more

Today was my first official day working at the foundation, and it was an interesting one. Most of the children are away on holiday, so less than half have been there for over a week. They will slowly trickle back in until Sunday, then it will be back to almost 60. It is so interesting how this foundation works. A lot of the children have parents who are dead, and a lot have parents who are addicted to drugs and on the streets. Some do have parents and/or family that they return to for holidays if they want to, but I am not quite sure how that works. It seems that some would literally be returning to the streets for days at a time. Today we only taught two lessons and spent most of the day ... read more
