I am sorry for the short entry last night, but I am ready to attempt summing up my last 9 days in this wonderful country... Last weekend was wonderful. On Saturday I woke up early and sacrificed paragliding on a beautiful day in order to take a day-trip by myself. I took a bus to Rionegro, a small yet bustling town about an hour from Medellin. The town was cute, the bus ride was pretty, and the people were nice; However, I have been to more interesting and beautiful places. Marie, if you read this, I went into a church in this town and said a very long prayer for you. I hope it reaches you. Outside the church, I bought you a little something so that the prayer can stay with you, because I believe ... read more

Hi y´all! I´ve been here in Medellin for about 2 and a half weeks now and all is going well. I´m staying with Gali (a Peruvian sort of missionary) and the other Cruzadas here and they´re really nice. I arrived with the intention of teaching English for a week in a school but that fell through due to Bureaucratic reasons beyond my control! Anyway I´ve since found my voluntary work (actually Maria Elvira and the other sort of missionaries found it for me), helping out in an orphanage for girls. It´s not really an orphanage actually. It´s more of a weekly boarding school for girls who´ve lost one or both parents, and whose remaining parent or family member can´t take care of them during the week due to having to go to work and being too ... read more

BOGOTA Bogota has plenty to offer. The city center is beautiful, and walking throughout is easy and relatively safe--just "no de papaya" and you will be fine (in other words use common sense). The Plaza Bolivar is a beautiful spot for travellers and tourists alike: the Prima Catedral, el Palacio Narino, the Bolivar Monument, the Palacio de Justicia, and other government buildings can be found here. Around the area, one can find a number of museums. I visited some of them last year--Casa de Botero, Casa de la Moneda. Others, like the Police Museum, are close by. Transmilenio is a great service, though most of the time you will have to fight your way just to be able to climb on. With a recent hike in price--now at 1500 Colombian pesos--most people are not happy with ... read more

As I walked down the bustling streets of Cucuta, Colombia with my Venezuelan minister/mentor, I noticed the craziness that surrounded us. The hustle and bustle of the street was incomparable to that of the USA. Even though this was a small town, the streets were filled with people as if it were NYC. The main area of activity was the central plaza where the town's cathedral shaded an open area of trees, vendors and people talking with friends and families. I wondered why we Americans stayed in buildings and homes but we never linger outside and socialize like Latinos. "Gringos think, Latinos feel," said my mentor as we walked the streets. His words were simple but very profound. Being in Latin America is no picnic for those that expect peace and order. Latinos, on the other ... read more

Well the good times have continued to roll here in Colombia - it is quickly catching up to Argentina in the race to become my favourite country in South America! After a great couple of weeks of volunteering it was back to travelling.....first stop was Bogota, the big city capital. Here I was lucky enough to have a friend introduce me to two Colombians, Andreas and Fabian, who quickly took me under their wing and put in a huge effort to make sure I had a great time in Bogota. This mostly involved feeding me every alcoholic beverage ever invented/drank/thought about in Colombia, although there were also some stops in Bogota´s amazing colonial sector and in its very interesting museums to keep me entertained. Next stop was the walled city of Cartegena on Colombia´s carribean coast. ... read more

Bas and I have finally parted ways in Taganga after a huge bloody battle where we fought tooth and nail over the qualities of different Colombian beer.Ok I jest a bit. We parted ways most amicably as can be expected as he is an all around great guy, but I started to feel the pull of the Big City so I can get back to regular Naa Speed.I can hear Bas groaning...Barranquilla ColombiaOk, So it´s not exactly the City of Lights. In fact most people who I spoke to (Colombians included) looked at me in wonder and stated without reservation that there is no tourism in Barranquilla. While the locals often noted that it is ´Chevere´ (cool) , tourists were less than impressed. One fellow went so far as to call it a ¨shit town¨, but ... read more

I know it is a big call, but I've come to the conclusion, after a month of pondering and reminiscing, that out of all the cities in South America, Cartagena is my favourite. After getting in rather late the first night, because I couldn't get a direct bus from Santa Marta, I realised that I didn't have much energy. To be brutally honest, even, I spent most of my time in Cartagena doing absolutely nothing, as I woke up late and would have a mid afternoon nap to pass the time. Being on the Carribean, I found Cartagena awfully humid and hot, more so than perhaps Taganga. The weather sapped me of my strength, and along with Jonathan and Kayla, I found myself doing not very much at all. I had been in a bit of ... read more

Day 84 Because if all the delays we didnt get into Bogota until about 5 in the eve. Went to El cafecito which was unfortunatley renamed El Cafeshito in Colombia. Didn´t live up to the Ecuadorian standards and was in a bad spot and it was pretty dead. Had food and caught up on naps after all the travels ready to go somewhere better the next day Day 85 Moved to Platypus, right in the middle of town and much better. Spent the day cruising Bogota, bit of shopping and tried to sort out the perennial cashflow issues. Tried to enjoy a film in the evening but turns out everything was in Spanish at the cinema. The nerve. After doing a couple of laps of the city ended up just going back and reading our books. ... read more
