Arriving to Santiago after a 12 hour flight travelling back in time.... I spent pretty much my first day sleeping. Which wasnt good as it messed up my sleeping pattern for the next day too. I finally dragged myself out off bed to try and venture through the city of Santiago, First impression not what i´d expected. It wasnt as poor as i´d imagine, the people was ever so well dressrd and you could see clearly they took pride in their apperance. It was definitely too smoggy the mountain range is very nearby but you can bearly see it through the smog. As lucky as i am something was happening on town.. Music is playing all around me, people dancing young and old, performance are held in closed of streets it was such a nice atmosphere. ... read more

Sunday 2nd December: All of my coach journeys have been fairly routine and uneventful until my trip fro Santiago to Valparaiso on Friday evening. It started as we were about to depart and we were told that we must change to a different coach because of mechanical problems. We started on our journey and I was seated up at the front. The driver kept slowing down and looking in his mirror. About 80Km into the trip he pulled the coach over to the hard shoulder of the motorway; the conductor got out, went across both carriageways to a police station on the opposite side and returned with three policemen. They boarded and went to the back of the coach. After a few minutes a further five police came and joined the first three. There was a ... read more

Am letzten Tag ... read more

I crossed the boarder into Chile at 1 am. It was in the same mountains I had only visited a few days before. We all had to get off the bus and let everything be searched. I froze! Luckily, I was much to sleepy to care much. Once back inside the bus, I unrolled my new sleeping bag, on the suggestion of a friend, and slept in my seat in my bag. Wonderful! I have never slept so well on the bus. I got a solid six hours of sleep and never awoke (AC is a big problem on these buses for me. Can you imagine? It was freezing out and they still have it on!). Anyways, I arrived at about 7 am. I walked to the nearest hostel. I was a little dissapointed because it ... read more

Hello Everyone This is our first entry for a little while, during which time we have managed to get ourselves from just over the Chilean border (San Pedro de Atacama) almost all the way to Santiago. We are currently in Valparaiso, a busy town on the Pacific coast that is also a bustling port. First things first. What was that brown gunk on Bridget's finger in Potosi? Nothing to do with navals or nostrils. We don't know the techinical term for it is, but "silver goo" is what it was. 40% pure silver. It's how Bolivia ships it's silver to the rest of the world. So now you know, and can sleep easy at night. So what have we been up to? First thing we did in Chile was almost have coronaries when we worked out ... read more

This week is our last week of classes. We have a final written exam in Spanish and a final oral exam covering the topics of the lectures. In the last few weeks we heard from a speaker discussing women’s rights, one talking about the situation with the indigenous population in Chile, and one explaining the poverty in Chile, specifically “tomas.” Tomas are land seizures by an organized committee. Groups of families without homes get together, research open land in Chile and plan a date and time to invade the vacant land. This process is illegal in Chile, but very common. Initially the police remove the squatters, but they continue to return until they are eventually allowed to live on the vacant land. Last Friday we visited a toma near Santiago. I had no idea what ... read more

Did an overnight to Valparaiso to see what all the fuss is about, UNESCO world heritage site etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valparaiso Spent some hours wandering the streets. Getting there was easy enough with a record time set for how long to find and board a bus (1 minute). Record broken again on the way back since a bus for Santiago was directly through the entrance our taxi dropped us at and its wheels were already in motion (less than 30 seconds). Back in Santiago and our familiar room facing Pio Nono in Bellavista. Interesting to watch a local drug dealer across the street going through the pockets of a passed out street person, also observed where he keeps his stash hidden in the brick wall. Returned to a restaurant we found last stay for the beyond belief Fillet ... read more

WOW what a magin city!! So vibrant and happening. The houses are all so colourful and lively! The are all built up in the mountains, it really is a wonderful sight! Tom and I joined a gorgeous Aussie couple, Sophie and Blake - who we met in Santiago at La Casa Roja... we were chatting about our travels and they told us about Valparaiso, Tom and I were instantly sold by their wonderful description of this beautiful city and decided to join them! We had also been told by some others that it is the city to visit in Chile... and spot on they were! We arrived in the arvo and checked into a great hostel, Marie Antwonet (spelling??), set up in the mountain. We had our own lil balcony and there weren't many others there ... read more

I’m beginning to get accustomed to living in this country, but there’s still not a morning I don’t wake up and say, “Oh my God, I’m in Chile.” On Tuesday, September 18th, Chile celebrated its Independence Day or Día de Patria. Students and adults get Monday through Wednesday off school or work to celebrate with family and friends. The five-day weekend ensures you won’t miss out on the fun Chile has to offer. The fiestas patrias are the best time of year to learn Chilean traditions. In class we spent an afternoon dancing the Cueca, the traditional Chilean dance. The cueca works like this: a man dressed in a full cowboy uniform, and a woman dressed in a fluffy dress dance in circles to typical cueca music. The idea is the man is supposed to ... read more

We eat well here. A standard lunch consists of three to four courses, always starting with soup - cream, never tomato. Next is a salad with lettuce, carrots, celery (my family loves celery) and corn. One of my very few complaints about the meals is the lack of ranch dressing. The standard dressing is oil with lemon and salt. I’m going through a bit of a ranch withdrawal. The main course usually has a meet, either chicken, steak or fish. The fish, of course, is excellent. Valparaiso relies on the fishing industry. We eat a wide selection of vegetables and fruits as well. Each meal comes complete with a selection of bread. Bread - they just can’t get enough of it. All kinds of bread, at all times of the day. And of course, there’s wine ... read more
