Last week we packed our container with 8 x moto's from New Zealand and one from Perth, Australia, and sent it out into the blue Pacific with the destination, Valparaiso, Chile. We have 3 x BMW 1200 GS's, 2 x 1150 GS's, 3 x brand new Kawasaki 650 KLR's, a 900 KTM and one Suzuki 650 DL from Luxembourg that will join us in Chile along with two more riders from Chile, both on BMW F650's. So we will be 14 in a loose group seeking adventure, as we have two fellows from New Zealand that will drive our Chase Truck. I will introduce our fellow adventurers in my next blogg. We are counting down the days left before departure, hoping we remember all the little incidentals that we may need on our adventure. ... read more

Dneska rano jsme vyrazili s moji kamaradkou Alejandrou a jednou dalsi jeji kamoskou do Valparaisa.

hi all new years eve was really great. we had an english guy (who spoke spanish really well), australian guy and american guy staying at our hostel and so we organised with them to go to see the fireworks with them and four other australian girls they had met in bolivia. the fireworks were fantastic - going off all around the bay and the atmophere was buzzing. we left the other guys and headed back to our hostel, where we were really welcomed by Victoria (our hostel owner - Casa Victoria) and her friends and family. i lost my camera to small boy for a while, who was hillarious - putting us into position to take photos and bossing us around to get the best shot. he even stood on a chair to get us all ... read more

Argentina´s long-distance buses are generally pretty comfortable, with cushy seats that recline pretty far back, which is important when you are taking an overnight bus and need to get some sleep. Overnight buses are the best because you save money by not paying for lodging and hopefully you can pass the time by sleeping (which I can do at the drop of the dime, although John usually needs drugs...like horse tranquilizers). Even for me, however, the bus ride from Mendoza, Argentina to Santiago, Chile was pretty horrendous. BORDER CROSSING IS NOT FUN. Especially in the middle of the night. We were awoken at 1:30 AM and had to get off the bus to wait in long line after long line getting various things stamped. For some reason all of this took 4 hours, so we did ... read more

Happy New Year everyone! Finally found an internet cafe I am happy to sit in for a bit, so it´s time for an update. New Year´s Eve in Valparaiso was brilliant. I think I said in the last letter that we got reallylucky when our pre-booked hostel turned out to be a mad house of the kind even we were not keen on, and that our new B&B, Casa Victoria was really cool. Well being there basically made our NYE. About 4 we went in the back garden and had a couple of glasses of wine with the other B&B residents. A lovely Austrian couple, an aussie, an american, an englishman who lives in Barcelona, and the daughter of the B&B owner with two friends from Santiago, one (Carolina) who spoke really good english. After a ... read more

hola! sorry in advance for the punctiation, i cant find the apostrophe all on this key board, and the spelling, well lets put it down to the fact im in a hurry rather than im a bit stupid. i suppose the rest of you are feeling a bit queezy today, but we havent even started yet. its about 4pm dec 31st and were having a rest before the party tonight. were in valparaiso, chile and tonight they hold a huge nye party with the biggest firework display (in the whole wide world ive heard) although we saw a poster that the fireworks looked more like a nuclear explosion - i might come back with an extra limb, or maybe one missing. youve probably heard most of it from sera already, but so far everything has been ... read more

I spent the last 2 days in Valparaiso and nearby Viña del Mar. They are both suburbs of Santiago (only 2 hours away). Valparaiso is considered the cultural capital of Chile, and Viña is a rich suburb. The new year´s eve is supposed to be a big thing in Valparaiso, and they have fireworks that last for more than 20 minutes (so I was told). So far, I wandered the streets of Valpraiso and the beaches of Viña, and I had a nice time, but had it not been for the new year, I would have skipped this place, and continued trekking. I am also paying an absurd amount of money for lodging here, because of the demand for the new year, and to an old handicapped lady, but I can cope with that for one ... read more

On the 30th we arrived in Valparaiso on the coast of Chile. We had booked ourselves into a plush hotel for the New Year celebrations and were much looking forward to a cold shower after travelling on a sweaty night bus. When we arrived at the hotel it has to be said we were not looking our best, that the lady in reception gave us a rather funny look as if to say we were in the wrong establishment! However as soon as I plonked my credit card down she seemed happier to invite us in!! Our room was fantastic, it had a properly plumbed in bathroom with a toilet that flushed! But not only that we had our own terrace balcony that overlooked the town. Once freshening up we started to explore the hill that ... read more

Now that there was no Frieda to take me to places I had to navigate the hot underground system in Santiago to find the bus station, book my ticket in Spanish and find the platform all on my own whilst carrying all my luggage. The bus certainly wasn´t as much fun as Frieda but the reclining seat, the air condition and the bonus of a toilet (no more pee stops on the road for me!) made it feel very luxurious indeed. 1 1/2 hours later I was in Valporaiso, a city built on several steep hills overlooking the Pacific ocean. "Valpo" as the locals call it, now a UNESCO heritage site, is a maze of steep, twisting streets working their way up various hillsides. All the buildings, many made out of corregated iron, are painted in ... read more

After crossing some of the most beautiful mountains we have seen yet, we dropped down to the coast of Chile and the city of Valparaiso. The name means Paradise Valley and the guidebooks set the scene for a most picturesque and colourful seaside resort. The reality was a little different - at least from what we imagined. Valparaiso has a stunning setting overlooking the sea and built on numerous hills, we approached it through lush valleys full of vineyards and groves of avocado, lemons and peaches. However, it is a very large city, the majority of which is full of shanty houses perched precariously on the steep hillsides. Within the teeming city is a neighbourhood that is very picturesque. Houses of many colours and styles line these streets, interspersed with bougainvillia and other flowering plants and ... read more
