Hello all! I finally have time to write about Perù. Lima was great; we stayed in Miraflores, which is like a sub-city of Lima. It was very touristy which also made it the nice part of Lima. But after three nights in Lima we went down to a little beach town called Punta Hermosa. And let me just say the trip down there may have been one of the most weirdest journeys of my life! It started off all right, there were too many of us so we had to get two taxies to the bus station. To fill in time while awaiting my new gadget to arrive we spent 2 nights in Valparaiso, a coastal city,near Santiago. We stayed at a really nice Hostel at the top of a acsensor, a little railcar up a vertical incline, pulled by cables. Steep at hell. It was so nice to only have a small pack and not have to lug the big ones. We left the big packs at the hostel in Santiago. We still had alot of steps to climb to the hostel and it was a bit of a slog. The hostel was in an open air museum, alot of art painted over the walls in the neighbourhood. What a transition from island Chiloe to the bustling port of Valparaiso! Shipping containers piled high on the docks, megaships in the harbor steered by tugboats, the Chilean navy, all spur contemplation of global commerce and international trade, just as the bus trip here through Chile´s central valley prompted thoughts of agribusiness. Chiloe´s salmon and shellfish mega farms ship internationally, and from the central valley wine, berries, beef, from the north copper, who knows what else. Do I really need Chilean raspberries from the coop out of local season, and why are they so cheap... Easter week is a big family and vacation time in urban Chile, and Valparaiso is crowded with families enjoying the warm sunny weather. Hello all!! I know that I wrote a little bit about my trip down to Patagonia but I didn’t finish telling you about the rest. So here it goes: after Torres del Paine, we went down to Punta Arenas for two nights. At this point we were very tired from the hike and just traveling so Sunday we went to the airport, wanting to see if we could get on a plane that day instead of Monday, but we couldn’t. Our ticket wouldn’t let us switch, even though there were some available seats. We waited in the airport for about 3-4 hours and then finally gave up. ITA - Uno dei porti più famosi al mondo, e una città patrimonio dell'UNESCO.. una combinazione particolare, ma un risultato molto interessante... Da un lato cargo giganteschi caricano e scaricano centianaia di containers, dall'altro, casette colorate si arrampicano sulle colline tutt'intorno. Dal paseo 24 de mayo si possono osservare bene queste due facce della città. Il porto è impressionante, a livello di dimensioni, e di quantità di merce in transito, ma la parte più interessante è la parte alta della città, distribuita su diverse colline, ed è lì che trascorrerò il pomeriggio, a passeggio per le stradine e i vicoli. Scendendo dal paseo mi trovo la strada sbarrata da una lotta fra due bande di cani, organizzati e crudeli da sembrare umani.. un po' più avanti, intorno all' Iglesia Matriz, un quartiere intero è in rovina, ... read more
