With a day to spare in Santiago we were looking for some sea and sun. Valparaiso (Valpo) and its neighbouring, more upmarket town, Viña del Mar (Viña) are just 1.5h away by bus, so jumped on the bus early in the morning. Valpo is an old harbour town from the time before the digging of the Panama Canal, and as such it was experiencing economic decline after the canal opened. Today it houses part of the Chilean naval fleet and is a destination for tourists, who mainly come there to wonder around town and look at the colourful houses climbing the hillside towards the harbour. We're no different to other tourists, so spent much of the day walking the streets and riding some of the 15 feniculars that run along the hillside. We had also heard ... read more

Our last day staying with Carmen and Sergio and their lovely family was bitter sweet. I loved staying with them; there was such a homey atmosphere and we were treated like princesses by everyone we met! They were so hospitable that we found it VERY difficult to leave. As a ´typical´ Chilean activity Vincente (Carmen´s oldest son) took us to a rodeo. This wasn´t just ANY rodeo... this was a full out, poncho wearing, spur toting, cow harassing rodeo in the middle of ABSOLUTE nowhere! I felt like I was back in Telkwa! After driving about 2 hours out of Santiago we hit a dirt road, dodged massive boulders, and finally arrived at a rodeo grounds. Of course we were the ONLY white people there, let alone 2 of very few women, and definitely the tallest ... read more

So we arrived in Valparaiso after a short and sweet bus ride from Santiago, Chile. We arrived at a cool hostel called El YoYo and started our adventures of the coastal areas of Chile. Valparaiso has all these cool asensores that are like elevators that go up the hillside. The entire city is built up and up and up into the hills. So there are these elevator things or a LOT of stairs. We used a little of both. The first day we were there we walked around the city, went down into the harbour and just sort of explored. The nice beaches were in the next city ¨Viña del Mar¨or the even posher nicer ones in the city after that - Reñaca. So day #2 was a beach day. And it was hoootttt. And apparently ... read more

For about 3 days I was in the town (or small city) of Chillan. It was interesting; hot, and there wasnt much to do. Chillan is the birthplace of Bernardo O' Higgins, and 30, 000 people were killed there during the big earthquake. Because of that, most of the buildings there arent of old architecture as all the old ones were destroyed by the earthquake. To recomend itself, there are fairly nice parks throughout. They have alot of green grass and are a nice shady respite from the sun. In Parque O' Higgins, the trees in the are huge, and there are lots of white benches and people milling around, namely skateboarders clacking over the tile and many dogs lolling in the grass and barking at each other. I sat there and read alot, even though ... read more

FELIZ ANO NUEVO! Valparaiso proved to be just to our taste. We were fortunate enough to jack up a surf with the owner of the hostel in the chilly Chilean coast. The waves were suprising big and dangerous and my mind is cast back to getting dominated at Piha last summer. The nightlife in Valparaiso and neighbouring Vina Del Mar was sensational. We went out to 5am on the 29th, 9am on 30th and some how i managed to hook up with the only other blonde in Chile. Our body clocks were now set for party mode - perfect for New Years. We got hooked up with tickets (thru local knowledge) to a party at the port for New Years. It was basically a 150m bar on a pier (cranes included). Best thing was drinks ... read more

As I stolled down a shadowy side street in El Plan, I wrinkled my nose and tried to work out exactly what was causing the acrid smell in the air. Walking past a footbridge and receiving a particularly strong nosefull, I realized that it was the whiff of stale urine. If I had not been to Valparaiso before, the unpleasantness of the smell, together with the stray dogs lurching accross the roads and the general feeling of grime, may have left me wondering what all the fuss was about. However, I was aware that Valparaiso's central business and shopping district was not the reason the town was name a Unesco World Heritage site in 2003 but that the real magic lay in the bohemian cerros (hills) which rise above the city. So, trying hard to breath ... read more

I did it for you, my readers. I arrived back in Chile only one night before New Year's Eve so I was hoping for something of a transition period, but the annual celebration would not wait for me to readjust. I had an ambitious idea but did not want to end up disappointed as the New Year celebration always seems a bit overrated. I continue to search for that magical evening that has eluded me. Still ranking high on my list are a sleep over at Maggie's house the year that Bryan Adams had song of the year with "Everything I Do, I Do It For You" and the year of our DDHS lock-in. With this possibility of disappointment lurking in my mind I peeled myself from the couch in Santiago, packed my day pack and ... read more

A short story of the dogs, cats and rats (of the sky) of Valparaiso:- With a pisco sour in hand and 4 hours until the fireworks display and the ticking of the time clock here in Chile into the new year I have time to reflect on the dogs, the cats and the rats of Valparaiso. You see there is a pecking order here in this wee port town about two hours west of Santiago. As in all typical port towns there is the seedy underbelly by which everything ticks. the cats. and the palatial prestige that sit above it, just content knowing that the engine is running smoothly. the dogs. then there are the rats. We arrived fresh, clean and innocent to the slow churning of the port town Valparaiso and checked into our hostel ... read more
