At the hostel in Santiago I met Rory and Angus, two brothers from Perth who were in South America partly on business and partly on pleasure. Despite a number of arguments with them concerning football (they were Eagles fans) I decided to tag along with them to Valparaiso, about 2 hours away on the coast. It wasn´t originally on my itinerary, but I got along well with the lads and thought it wasn´t too significant a detour. I´m glad I did. Valparaiso is an interesting place with a fascinating history (sorry, if you want to know about that you are going to have to google it yourself). Hola So it´s official, I¨m a blogger. I´m not a huge fan of this form of communication but it seems the best for keeping in touch and sharing pictures. Day one i arrived at Santiago Airport with Anthony waiting just out immigration. After a brief pow-pow we decided to head to Valparaiso an old port town directly west of Santiago. Valparaiso surpassed our expectations. 11 hills surrounding one of the oldest ports in Chile. It was a bit seedy but in a fascinating way. We sat for hours on the pier watching young and old men fish with spools of line wrapped around cans, pvc or round pieces of wood called catalinas with a hook and a piece of squid. Valparaiso The next day we again tried unsuccessfully to connect with our couch-surfing connection and decided to go it on our own to the neighboring port city and former capital (or main seat of the government) of Valparaiso. We quickly figured out the metro and we soon walking around the colorful, unique city. Much like the FUN-icular in Santiago...there are many what they call "Ascensors" running up and down the hills of the city. The entire city is squished into the hills that rise out of the sea. We rode a few and explored around. We were interested by (and a little weary of) the fact that these were built around the turn-of-the-century (you know the one over a hundred years ago!!).
