3/19/07 11:46 PM Hi everyone! So this weekend I went to Valparaíso, which I can best describe as Chile's form of San Francisco, but… well... there's much more to say. First of all, Valparaíso, or "Valpo" and Viña del Mar (where we went last weekend) are the two big coastal towns in this part of Chile. Viña is the beach resort town, and Valpo is the port town. Our study center here organizes a few optional trips every month for the students to go on, Saturday was the first one to Valparaiso. We had a tour guide who took us around the town, but it was really hard to pay attention to him because there was just so much to see. Like San Francisco Valparaiso is one of, if not the, largest port towns in Chile, ... read more

Hello all!! Well I got back from Pucon yesterday morning, we had a fabulous bus ride during the night, i got a lot of sleep...not!! But it was amazing down there, it is definatly one of the most beautiful places I have been too!! We left Friday nightand arrived Saturday morning. It was a 12 hour bus ride and on the map it doesn´t look that far at all! I could have gone to Colorado in that amount of time!! Anyway, Friday we took a little tour around Pucon and saw amazing waterfalls and mountains, I loved it!! Saturday some friends and I rented a boat and some fishing poles and went fishing, and sadly we didn´t catch a thing. Actually it felt like there weren´t any fish in the lake but we still had a ... read more

Recovering from the vineyards of Mendoza, we passed back over the andes and welcomed the relaxed beach town feel of Valparaiso and its neighboring town, Vina del Mar. atop the steep hillsides perched colorful houses and the winding sidewalks were fun to stroll around... we found ourselves laughing at the local traffic jams made up of horseback riders weaving their way through the cars and dogs (of which there are roughly 7000 strays in the city). valparaiso and it's neighboring coastal towns have a long and winding coastline that reminds one of cruising along the pacific coast highway in california....the cliffs dotted with amazing mansions and shacks alike. benefitting from a barista's public transit knowledge, we visited little Vina del Mar, a much newer city it appeared with it's condos rising up in every direction. ... read more

A Disappointing Early Morning for the Gringos It is dark when the alarm rings at 7am. We want to be out of the house in an hour in order to arrive in Valparaíso around 10. Once ready, we walk the familiar two block route to Metro Santa Lucía against the traffic of uniformed school girls. It is rush hour and the metro is more congested than usual, but luckily, we are heading in the direction of San Pablo and most everybody else is going the opposite way. At the Universidad de Santiago stop, we exit and make our way to the adjoining Terminal Alameda, a station where buses leave for Valparaíso every 10 or 15 minutes. The round-trip ride only costs 5,800 pesos (~US$12). Our bus leaves at 8:30, which left us little time to get ... read more

Hello all!! It´s been awhile but nothing really new has been going on. But I did start my classes this week, or at least half of them. My Spanish classes started, thank goodness, but my geography classes haven´t, apparently they start next week. I figured this out by showing up to them and having no one else but other gringos (it´s not a bad word here) present. But I think I finally have it down! But today I´m off to Pucón, it´s about a 12 hour bus ride south! But it should be a lot of fun, there are a lot of lakes and parks that you can go hiking around. And then my friend and are planning a trip down to Patagonia for later in the month. But when i get back I´ll post more ... read more

Well it´s now my fourth day in Valparaíso and I alreday feel like I´m getting used to things like not being able to flush tp down the toilets, which bus to take home and to school and I even think I may be understanding a bit more Spanish, maybe. But two nights ago I went out with my brother to a disotecho to go see a guy who is famous for singing terrible, kinda like that guy from american idol. The guy didn´t even go on stge until 2:00!! And finally at 3 I asked my brother if we could leave after the next song, which was the last song of the night anyway. That night I didn´t end up going to bed until 4am. They have very long nights here, they start a lot later ... read more

Wow is all I can pretty much say right now. I feel like it describes my my day yesterday or at least the afternoon. We left Santiago around 1 and ate lunch and then headed for Valparaiso around 3:30 and getting there around 5:15ish. I met my family and they are super nice my mom´s name is Monica and one of my new sister´s name is Laura. I haven´t met the only brother I will ever have yet because he was camping, at least that´s what I think he´s doing. But everything is different here, not bad but definatly different. We took a placement exam today and well let´s just say that I won´t be placed that high, but tomorrow we have an oral exam so we´ll see how that goes. But I think Monica will ... read more
