New Years Eve 31st December 2006 So we booked the poshest restaurant in Valparaiso for tonight's festivities. We were walking along yesterday admiring the views when we stumbled across this beautiful looking restaurant with panoramic views of the bay. We popped in to have a look around and couldn´t help but book ourselves table for our most expensive dinner ever! We´re told to get there for 6.30pm for the aperitifs. At 6pm Kate is worrying as she wants to get there early enough to sample the atmosphere, but of course we´re running slightly late because we had to have an afternoon nap. We´ve been for a wander earlier in the day and lots of people have set up tents all along the beach in preparation for tonight. The guide book says that hundreds of thousands of ... read more

Valparaiso 30/12/2006 - 03/01/2007 According to the guide books Valparaiso or Valpal for short is Chile's most interesting town. With it's steep hills crowed with a jumble of multicoloured clapboard homes, a mixture of wooden shacks & weather beaten mansions & it's many rickety old acensors carrying people where it is too steep to build a road. All the books say that the city has seen better days, is a bit rough around the edges but will weave a spell on you & you will love it .... and we did, with bells on! We spent our days riding the acensors up to stunning viewpoints, riding the rickety old trolley buses, wandering around the maze of narrow streets in the old town, we took a boat trip around the harbour and generally just mooched about, winding ... read more

On our way back from Easter Island we had an afternoon to kill in and around Santiago. Having visited the city on our first stopover we decided to try a quick trip to Valparaíso. The bus journey took a little longer than we had been led to believe, however, and in our rush to discover our destination once we had arrived we forgot our bag in the vehicle. Chasing after the bus to its depot further ate into the time we had to explore this World Heritage site. We had seen a huge flea market crammed with all sorts of fascinating kitsch sprawled along the main street into the city, but with only a one dollar note left between us we decided window-shopping there would not be sufficient, and to avoid disappointment we headed towards the ... read more

Ola, What have i been up to the last couple of days you ask! Well even if you don’t I will tell you anyway coz I know my Mum is out there and she loves me and listening to my stories. Santiago was a real blast. My last night there was spent with a couple of English lads from my hostel who, having arrived that day, decided that it was about time to sample the local wheat, hops and barley. Also, Chile were playing Paraguay in a friendly game of soccer so we hoped to take in some cultural experiences as well. And what a night it was. We ended up roaringly drunk chanting Chilean soccer songs (see title of blog) and being generally rowdy with all these Chilean blokes in a local bar (they have ... read more

Apologies in advance if this entry is somewhat succinct - I am tired today, details to follow. We are in Valparaiso, two hours west of Santiago. I love it. Up until now, Chile´s ramshackle, slightly rundown tin houses have done very little for me. However, tuck them into tiny winding streets on some really steep hills; paint them bright colours and decorate them with murals; intersperse with some arty cafes and all of a sudden you have a spectacular city and a UNESCO world heritage site. Result. We decided to spend a week here. It feels as though we haven´t really stopped for the last couple of weeks and, after nearly six weeks away, it is beginning to dawn on us that we´re not short of time and that we don´t need to be permanently rushing ... read more

15 November, Wednesday... We arrived in Valparaíso or Valpo for short in the early afternoon and checked into a rather different hostel to the one in Santiago. It wasn't run down per se but it was in a rather old building and smelt a bit. Anyway we weren't planning to stay for long and headed out soon to see this town the guidebook had promised us would be so beautiful. At first glance it seems quite similar to any other city and we were none to impressed but on closer inspection is is actually quite a nice place, the houses are colourful and all of differing styles and spread out haphazardly over the hill which leads down to the port (and a beautiful port it is too). As the city is built on a hill and ... read more

Buenos Dias. Ziemlich turistischer Ort. Morgen geht's weiter noerdlich nach La Serena -... read more

We have just finished our first 24 hours in Valparaiso, or "Valpo" as its also known. And what a trip. We left Mendoza on Wednesday morning, later than we wanted, as always, and found our way onto Ruta 7, which snaked its way up toward the Andes, through a lower yet older range that looks out over Mendoza. The road was good, windy, yet not windy!! And so we made good progress upward. 20km from the border, we had lunch and ironically, our last meal in Argentian was mutton, not beef! Once we left the sleepy, out-of-season ski resort, we found the wind had picked up and it started to snow, although the flakes did not settle, so the road remained safe. We passed alongside Aconcagua, the highest peak of the Americas and reached the tunnel ... read more

Just a very quick blog to let you know im still moving around and loving the wonderful country of Chile. Ive moved on from Santiago now and spent a 2 hour bus journey north (mosly asleep though a small amount of self language tuition was done) travelling to Valparaiso. 110km north of Santiago Valpa is a city in 2 halfs the bottom section is pretty ordinary full of all the hustle and bustle youd expect in a modern urban city. My first night was spent feasting on empandanas (very tasty) and relaxing over a few beers with some Ozzys in my hostel. Then today fresh and ready for exploration i headed into the 2nd part of the city which truly defies all common sense and logic.. The high part of the city is made up of ... read more
