Cindy & Steve

Can two early-50-somethings from the Washington DC area fulfill their marriage vow of fun and adventure on the global road? Steve, mild mannered director of a small nonprofit, and Cindy, environmentalist and former fed, lose our teen at a semester away program and embark on a whirlwind 4-continent journey in the first half of 2007. Departure date: Jan 15. First stop: Hanoi, Vietnam.

This three week trip to Brazil seemed like a better idea last winter, before we confronted the practical reality of such a diverse country, and tried to learn Portugese. We would start in Rio with the family of our AFS exchange student, who we had never met. We would share a wilderness experience, canoeing in either the Amazon or Pantanal areas. But after a cancelled international flight and two unexpected overnights in suburban Virginia and Sao Paulo, we were face to face with overwhelmingly friendly strangers who suggested we join them for a typical, though unseasonably cool and drizzly, Sunday afternoon at various Rio parks. It was wonderful.... read more

A year ago we began our travels. We fulfilled our goals of fun and adventure, and so much more. What stays with us still are three things: the grand spaces of nature world wide, from the glaciers of Patagonia to the islands of Halong Bay and the grasslands of southern Africa; the comforting familiarity of people going about their daily lives in so many diverse places; and how very rich and selfish we are as Americans. Steve returned with renewed energy and determination to make a difference in the world, through his work. Cindy's channeled this into living a more sane lifestyle. 4 continents, over 2 dozen flights, including one airport doubling as a soccer field. Many bus and ferry overnights. Also travel by train, jeep, tuk-tuk, motorbike, boats large and small, bicycle, and foot. My ... read more

ah Africa! Africa » South Africa » Cape Town By fun adventureJune 21st 2007 Africa! The word evokes for me so many contradictory images. Our month in southern Africa was a strange and wonderful world away. Internet connection, where it existed, was expensive, and our daughter was with us, depriving me of a major motivation for keeping up entries. Now we’re home, my tan is fading, and here’s highlights. We started in Capetown, visiting townships and parents of a former au pair. We drove south and east along the coast, around the Cape of Good Hope and the very southernmost tip of Africa, where European ships sailed for hundreds of years, and where some very noisy penquins now r... read more

Africa » Zimbabwe » Victoria Falls June 8th 2007

Zimbabwe was hard. As sson as we crossed the border, planted fields and grazing gave way to abandoned, dusty plots; seed was too expensive this year. I was followed for blocks by able bodied young men whose only income is crafts and hounded by carvers desperate to trade for my used clothes and shoes. The government pays police to escort tourists to Victoria Falls past these illicit hawkers. Zimbabwe is a closed, collapsing economy, imploding under its own restrictions, with unimaginably drastic impacts on its citizens. I had that old time China feeling; no one will talk publicly about the government or the economy; too many are watching, listening. Mixing with ordinary citizens in shops and eateries is nearly impossible. But beyond the desperation and the police state the citizens are warm and hospitable. Unofficial ... read more

Africa » Botswana » North-West » Chobe National Park June 6th 2007

northeast Botswana I'm sure I've been this dusty before, but I don't really remember when. Last year's rainy season never arrived, and northeastern Botswana is in the grips of a 30 year drought. The wetland area is shrunk, and low water levels severely limit traditional poling areas, so we never got to this particular form of travel. The thin veneer of grass and soil holding the underlying sand is nearly gone in places. Still, the countryside is beautiful, and our seven day backcountry trip is one of the highlights of our travels. Animals are only somewhat restricted from their historic ranges, as the natural areas are extensive and even cross international boundaries. We started out in Maun and traveled through Moreme Park to Chobe Park and Kasane, and finished with a boat trip along the Chobe ... read more

friends in the strangest places Africa » South Africa » Cape Town By fun adventureJune 1st 2007 When our daughter was younger, a young woman from Cape Town watched her and her friends after shool. We finally met her family during our stay in Cape Town. Depsite some uncertainty on both parts about bridging the cultural gaps (income, racial labels, government) it worked out fabulously. Everywhere in Cape Town we saw the legacies of apartheid. We hesitantly took a township tour, where we met some incredible people doing amazing things to help themselves, their community and the "new South Africa." Most impressive: a home converted to 2-room bed & breakfast built from scrap metal and lu... read more

South America » Peru » Loreto » Iquitos » Amazon Rainforest May 10th 2007

Our last effort before starting back to Takoma Park (by boat and plane) was a trip from Iquitos Peru, on the actual Amazon river, and only accessible by boat and plane, upstream and into Pacara National Park for several days. It was a very basic (and buggy) trip, even by our standards. We traveled first by ferry for a day and a half to a small village, Bretana, just across the river from the park entrance. There we met our guide and boatman, who loaded their motorized dugout canoe with supplies and a live chicken. Steve had everything translated for him by me, since they did not speak English. We stayed in several refugios in the park itself, which at this time of year is mostly water. We did not get out of the boat ... read more

South America » Peru » Loreto » Iquitos May 3rd 2007

We arrived in Iquitos by plane on a day off, and that night the riverway was crowded with locals celebrating the end of a long weekend. Iquitos had a carnival atmosphere, much more laid back than other places in Peru we had been. Iquitos is still boomig, being the main Amazo port for some distance around, and its heyday was during the rubber boom about 100 years ago. We also met three Shipiro women, teen daughter mother and grandma, who sold us a tribal weaving, gave me a seed bracelet and necklace for my daughter, shared their address and email and posed for a photo.... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Manu National Park May 1st 2007

I cant say enough about our amazing 7 day trip up and over the Andes from Cuzco into Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the many lowland river areas that eventually drains into the Amazon. We went from high altitude grassland to cloud forest and then by boat down the Rio Madre de Dios to the actual park. Our group of 6 had a great guide who grew up along the river. The birds! The plants! The scenery! The bugs!... read more

What a transition from island Chiloe to the bustling port of Valparaiso! Shipping containers piled high on the docks, megaships in the harbor steered by tugboats, the Chilean navy, all spur contemplation of global commerce and international trade, just as the bus trip here through Chile´s central valley prompted thoughts of agribusiness. Chiloe´s salmon and shellfish mega farms ship internationally, and from the central valley wine, berries, beef, from the north copper, who knows what else. Do I really need Chilean raspberries from the coop out of local season, and why are they so cheap... Easter week is a big family and vacation time in urban Chile, and Valparaiso is crowded with families enjoying the warm sunny weather. The local daily paper boats a 95% hotel reservation rate for this weekend. Yesterday afternoon and evening ... read more
