I´ll tell you how its going I guess
Travel Blog Posts
Hello all - Well, this is my last blog for the season. I'm sitting right now in the airport waiting for my flight to New York. Vomit. Basically, I was a moron and booked one flight from 12:30 to 5:00 pm and the other from 5:30 AM (AM!?!?!) to 8:30. Again, vomit. I've got a long night ahead of me here in Fort Lauderdale... and can you believe the closed all of the resturants (what I'm I supposed to eat? And I want coffee!). Anyway, so I've got all night to go on and on and on... Last week I took sometime away from my monkey playground in the clouds and went to the beach... Dominical. It was entirely awesome. The roads aren't paved. The beach stretches forever in both directions. The forests and the palms ... read more
She did request that. And I have been lazy at this blogging business, so I'm getting back into it. I hope the description pleases my mother. I'll start at the place I'm staying. I know I've described it a bit, but here I'll go into laborious detail, just for the fun of it. The main complex of cloudbridge has three buildings. The electricity comes from solar panels, the stove works on gas, and the water comes right out of a mountain stream. if we are cold at night, we can light a fire in a wood buring stove, over which we can also cook beans. (Dried beans, by the way, are very difficult to cook, and require pre-soaking for a few hours and then cooking for at least an hour. Then, they still aren't very good. ... read more
I left Puerto Rico on saturday. I want to say thanks to everyone that made my stay so awesome and interesting. I hope we all keep in touch, and I'll see many of you in September or in November when I go back to Puerto Rico. I already miss it! There was a going away party for me on friday night, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Thanks to Maria for hosting us, for better or worse. On saturday, I got all the way to Fort Lauderdale, and then they cancelled my flight. Eh! They put me up in the airport Hilton and gave me tickets for food. It wasn't so bad. I got some work done on my grant, which I sort have been putting off due to my extreme travel stress right now, ... read more
The last week has been a lot of fun. Mostly people hanging out together and having good times. Last saturday Laurie (my advisor to all that don't know) decided we needed to throw a party. We invited everyone from Punta Santiago (the other researchers) and of course, their was the undergraduates, myself, and Laurie's friends. So in all, it was a lot of people. For the party we actually got the grill to work... not the little charcoal burning grill we have been using so far, but the huge propane powered grill. It would never have come together if it weren't for Mike's deep knowledge of grilling technology (he is an undergraduate). laurie went all out and bought Kabob materials and hot dogs and burgers. I didn't use to like burgers much, but the less meat ... read more
Hey all - It's been a while since I've written. The last group of undergrads left and a new group has arrived. I turned in a large grant. I've gone to monkey island and gotten some data, although not nearly as much as I would like. Whatever, I just have a certain number of goals and I would like to reach them before I leave. To walk away with a functional experiment this summer - that would be heaven! I actually think a lot about starting to write up and get some stuff out there. I would love to put a lot of energy into that this year. I'm starting to think a lot about my trip to Costa Rica. I have to book a place to stay the first night (even though I get in ... read more
Hello All - I'm back again. On the blog and in Puerto Rico. Things have been pretty good. The weather is mediocre, but not to hot, which makes for good monkey experiment times. Monkeys I recognize from last year are a year bigger. Its amazing how much they grow! I've finished one project and moved onto the second. Which is good because I have four things on the docket for this one month that I am here. I'm also writing a grant, and I feel that is going really well too. I "finished" it on the first, and so I have until the 14th to continue to work on it. Yeah! Things go fast though. The undergraduates I started with here are already leaving next week. Ack! And I still have to remember to plan some ... read more
I'm still in trujillo, but I'm leaving tonight to go back to Lima. That marks about three weeks here. I guess this time hasn't been as busy as the previous adventures, but its been nice to relax a bit. Its especially been wonderful to be with Jason and with his friends here. I was getting a bit loney on the the trail all by myself for so long. I just wanted someone to talk to a bit! I'm sending out a special thanks to Belkys, Segundo, Lily, Nancy, Jorge, and Laura for being so nice. When I met up with Jason in Lima, I arrived a day later than I had anticipated. I had to take an extra day because I had to wait for a time to get a ticket to Ollytantambo to see Machu ... read more
Sorry I haven't written in such a very long time. I've been busy busy busy! So many things have happened! Well, since I left off, I was heading from Puno to Cuzco to start in on the motherload of archeaological sites in Peru. The ride was uneventful, and I arrived in Cuzco unscathed. Some advice for travelers though: I've learned the hard way to stick to my guns about what taxi prices should be. Anywhere in Cuzco is 3 soles, and no more. However, at the bus station, they charged me ten soles. The drivers were all in agreement over it, and everyone charged that amount... I had to accept! If I was smarter, I would have waited on the street for a different new taxi. Its difficult though because the bus station isn't supposed to ... read more
Hey, sorry about yesterday, I'll finish this post now. Sometimes I get on crappy computers and it such a pain to have to write extensively on them. Well anyway, yesterday I arrived in Puno, which is on Lake Titicaca. Today I took a tour of the lake and some cultures that make a living there. Before I even came this way, I had a good couple of days in arequipa. So far, I am really enjoying peru! After the Peru boarder, the world starts to take on more shape, and becomes actually hills and valleys and canyons instead of just dunes. Small plants that look like little fuzzes about a foot or two across litter the entire landscape (have you ever seen that original star trek episode when they have all of those fuzzy things all ... read more
Well, I made the border crossing. I don´t seem to be able to take out money, so I hope that just a local thing and not a peru thing. I only had about 20,000 chilean pesos on me (about $40), which I exchanged. That will get me to arequipa, but after that... :) On the way in, I got to see the desert from the day time. Still good. After sleeping well last night in a room with TV (yipee!) I am feeling much better. I hope I stay that way. Mostly, I just wanted to blog to give you one silly picture I took. Enjoy! love Kelly... read more
